This actually made me cry... graphic... warning.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Llrb...eature=related
The person making the video is probably a child, I actually think he is a child by his other videos, so he is self-demeaning and emotional... but the video itself is a beautiful video... until the end when you see the video of Sniper's "last moments".
I found this while doing research on scale rots.
I literally cried :( I hope I never mess up with my ball python like this
-
Well i have to take a different angle on the matter. Once again someone who did not do proper research before they own an animal. I feel terrible that one heck of a beautiful spider had to die, but it was because of the video poster's lack of care that put the snake in that situation.
Some of you might not like what i have to say, but i see stuff like this all the time and it always makes me angry.

It wont let me open the link on my phone or my ipad. What is the name of the YouTube video where I can look it up that away?

I almost cried too because the poor thing should not have had to go through that in the first place. I definitely wouldn't let my animal die a slow, excruciating death once its clear that it can't be saved. Seeing animals go through unnecessary pain like that makes me want to hit someone

It is called: "A tribute to a friend. RIP Sniper. "

I wouldn't video tape something like that, let alone show it to people.
-
The snake didn't die from scale rot that was just the instrument, neglect. I get very frustrated when I hear people whom take on the care of any animal and are unable to properly care for it due to a lack of understanding, finances or time. I wish people would not buy a living thing because it is 'cool' I hope that the person whom made the video learned something, but it is appalling that that lesion was taught with the suffering of a living dependent.

I looked at the other videos from this kid, and to me it doesn't seem like a neglect case. He's very thorough in checking them to make sure they're healthy and very intent on their well-being. Sometimes a tragedy like this happens, but I don't think the kid was a bad owner. Granted, I do think if the poor snake was beyond saving he should have been humanely euthanized and not have had to suffer until the end.
Just my :2cent:

How the heck could this kid sit there and pull out his cell while his "beloved" snake is dieing and record it?! It was his own fault and im pissed that this beautiful spider bp had to die because of some ki. iIf you watch his other videos the snake got out of its tank and sat on the heat mat and he was supposedly doing better (two months before death). Im guessing the wounds got infected from there and wasnt taken care of. Poor husbandry from the beginning, and it makes me wanna find this kid and take all of his animals cause obviously he cant care for them.

It's a case of a kid doing everything right, yet the snake escaped and got burned and then the kid did everything right AGAIN, taking him to the vet immediately, getting meds to give him, treating it properly.. and yet the poor snake did not survive.
Just because a pet died doesn't ALWAYS mean that someone is automatically a bad owner or neglecting the animal. I think we all see SO many cases of neglect and bad care that we do jump to the conclusion that it must be yet another case of a bad uncaring owner.
In this case, the snake WAS under a vet care, and if the vet and the owner thought he had a good shot at recovering, who are we to judge elsewise just from a video we see on the net? Yes, it ended up dying, and yes perhaps some of us would have had him euthanized earlier, but that would be our decision for our pet.
I hope that he does find another snake quickly, because I honestly believe he does a great job overall. Ball pythons just sometimes escape. They don't always hide in a shoe. Sometimes they put themselves into a dangerous spot and get hurt. They have brains the size of a split pea, we gotta love them for their looks sometimes!
-
Very sad video and story indeed... It's good that the owner did everything he could to try and make it better for the snake. I agree that the snake should have been euthanized; you can see he is obviously in unbearable pain at the end when he is wailing about... :( poor little guy, rest in peace.

Re: This actually made me cry... graphic... warning.
Absolutely heartbreaking :( It's horrible that the beautiful spider went through so much pain, but I agree with Fenrir and dr. del that it definitely doesn't seem like a neglect case at all. I mean, sure, maybe the kid should have secured his tub better, but he has other bps that seem to be doing alright, and he did bring him to a vet and seemed to be very concerned about the snake's well-being.
I do also have to agree with some of the others that I think it's pretty awful that he videotaped the snake's last moments though. I never would have been able to do something like that. Not that it makes him a bad person or anything, but if you can see your animal is in that much pain and there's nothing more you can do for him, just have him humanely euthanized, don't record it and then put it up on youtube :( I don't know, it just kind of bothered me.
The whole situation doesn't seem to be the kid's fault though, since he really seemed to care and tried to do his best at least up until the end.
-
I will not pass judgement on this kid, looking at the video of the burn it didn't look too bad (I've seen worse).
He is a kid and as with most kids (and some adults), you have to be very specific with things, the vet should have taken this into consideration when he saw the animal, and had a follow appt. for a week to 10 days later to make sure the animal was healing properly.
-
Wow,
Who is without fault, cast the first stone...
Seems to me that this kid actually is quite responsible for his age. He seems to love his snakes very much and from what is seen in the videos, he takes good care of them and seems to have done his homework.
So he had a snake escape. Seems to me this has happened to the best of us !! The snake escaped and got into a bad spot. Some escapees are never found. Some are found dead, some are found injured or so weak they pass away. This one got burned by crawling on a heat source.
I wouldn't have "taped" the last moments either, or shown it. But that alone doesn't make him a bad owner. I have seen far, far worse !!! All his snakes look well fed and well taken care of, aside from the burn. He even seems to care about possible laws regarding our hobby. Most people don't give a ding dong.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that doesn't see a case of neglect or abuse here...
-
Ide like to retract my previous post, i got caught up watching videos of people who actually didnt kno wat they were doing an killed there pet out of neglect. I posted on this forum taking it out on a kid who did the right thing, it was just a bad situation. pythontricker, you did all you could but even then it doesnt work out the way you hoped. little late but im sorry for your loss.
-
As a side note: I didnt post this video to illicit a flame war or state that I felt anything neglectful was going on... simply that the video made me very sad and I wished that such a beautiful snake could have survived such unfair circumstances.
Just wanted to clarify :/
RIP Sniper, sorry for the loss
-
Oh man that sucks. He did do everything he could, but some still don't make it. My spider escaped a couple weeks ago and I found him next to the flexwatt a shelf below. The dang thing! He didn't get burned luckily because there is very little room between the tubs, so he was against the back of the rack. It was just a dumb mistake of mine that he got out, forgot to put the 'safety' back on the shelf. Definitely something we can all attest to at some point I'm sure.
-
I stand corrected in this case!! Thank you DR Dell!!!
I apologize to pythontricker if he sees this I did not look in to the situation carefully and jumped to a conclusion, I am old enough to know better.
I as I am sure that most here have seen herps that have died or have been rescued for the hands of someone whom NEVER should have had a reptile in the first place. I am currently caring for 2 that came from a very poor keeper. We had a ball python that was rescued too late a few weeks back that the nameless... thought that young snake against a starved street rat would be a good fight to watch... No details, please don't ask there is an investigation started and charges pending...
deformed lizards, burned snakes, RI, cages so dirty I felt I needed gloves to handle the outside, igggies left outside in 9ºC wether because the cage was in the way... I tend to be a bit quick jump.
It doesn't matter about debates over thermostats or tubs, substrates or anything else nuances, clean housing acceptable temps and an owner trying to the best they can for their pet, are the things that matter. I debate nuances but I know that those whom I have debated have healthy environments for their animals in their care. That is what really matters.
Again I am sorry I jumped to conclusions.

One thing I love about this board.............the passion is real and most will admit when they make a mistake.:gj:
RIP-Sniper
On a side note, everyone is bashing on the last minuets cell video but it is a true learning experience. I do agree that the snake should have been put down before that but seeing the pain is what makes it real. Real is what wakes people up.
If I could have filmed my Marley being put down I would have, but she went so quick I didnt even get to give her the last treat I had in my pocket.
-
I just watched it and I am in tears right now, I can agree that I don't think he should have recorded Sniper's last moments (those really made me cry) but I think that the kid knew full well what was going on and gave him the best care that he could.
As much as some people might be angry over it I am sure he beat himself up enough over it. You can clearly see that it broke his heart, I know it broke mine and it wasn't even my snake.....

Re: This actually made me cry... graphic... warning.
I would like to get this off my chest, and in the nicest way possible...
The accusations that people made from a single video astonish me.
Every single person who said something that they just made up, should feel horrible. Not only is this rude to the person your making the accusations about, but think how you would feel, if you lost a beloved pet, made a video, and everyone basically called you a MORON for doing what you did.
I haven't been around lately... But holy crap guys...
This is not how we all should act....
Thank you for those whom have apologized. Everyone makes mistakes, but this one just irritated the crap outa me.

Yeah, i haven't checked on this thread in a while and just noticed the "proof" posted. Seems as if I'm another one to also make quick assumptions, so i retract a lot of my comments, but to a point, there still is a neglect of care in there, but just a overlooked accident.
That being said, everyone makes mistakes, but unfortunately this one ended with a snake losing their life.
