Biscuits and Gravy, looks like RI.....
Well I had Hera out earlier to spot clean her tank and held her for a bit and loved on her. As I was getting ready to put her back in her tank when I felt something wet run down my arm, at first I thought she had peed on me (would be preferable) but it was clear and looked just like snot.

[Shoot] So I checked her throat using a q-tip to force her mouth open and sure enough I some some small bubbles in her throat. She isn't wheezing or making any clicking sounds or even seem to be having trouble breathing. Nevertheless I have called the vet and am waiting on them to call back........[Mother of Pearl]

Yeah I won't be able to get her in likely until around the 27th or the 28th. I'm hoping that it turns out to be nothing and I am just being paranoid, but yeah better safe than sorry. [shoot] and we just spent most of what we had on Christmas presents too......

my experience cost me 150 with medication. i would increase her temps and check to see if the mucus increases if there is no weezing or increase of mucus i wouldnt worrie especially since people like me cant afford random vet visits. thats my 2 cents but im sure people will diagree and i am relativly new to ball pythons.

sometimes they get water in their nose or maybe she was laying in the water. if it was in its hide when u pulled it out did u see any condensation on top of the hide. sometimes it gets humid in their hide and they may get water on them or in their nose. bump ur temps up a few degrees and keep ur ambient temps up.

OUCH! Yeah that will hurt, but the vet we would see is VERY well known and has been given mad props (his name is Kevin Fitzgerald) and I have been told that his prices aren't too bad. I've already raised her temps and I'll keep a check on her, if she does nothing else and has no sneezing or wheezing I may wait and see what happens.

When I picked her up she was near her water bowl since that is the hot side and since I had fed her yesterday morning she was over there to help digest. I never heard any noises or anything and it wasn't until I was done cleaning her tank and I was putting her back in that I felt it.

It was wet and slightly cold and ran down my arm like water but when I looked at it more closely it looked just like very runny mucus. She then opened her mouth and I was like "oh [shoot]" and I immediately put her back in, raised the temps and called the vet.

I hope like hell that the new corn we just got last night doesn't already have it.

They didn't necessarily stand for a specific word, [in your first post] but it's still not allowed. There are lots of rules, trust me I've received a warning myself ;) It's because this site is used by teachers with their students so we have to keep it as family friendly as possible. I'm glad it made you laugh, that's my favorite expression to use around children, oh biscuits and gravy!

Yeah I really should read ALL forum rules when I join one but as long as I don't act like a total tool I usually never have any issues. Thanks for letting me know though! :D

In response to your thread though... I'm guessing it might be hard to get anything done this weekend considering that today is Christmas Eve. If you can get anyone to look at your snake and get some meds that would be best, but depending where you live it might be a long drive to get to a 24/hr vet. If you can get the vet to call you back you can just ask to pick up the meds, it will most likely be an injection. Also, raise your temps in the enclosure, I would say 92 93 if you can do it. That will help dry out the air and keep him going till Monday if you have to wait that long.

Your post has the "RE:...." and I didn't get it fixed fast enough to take the asterisks out so when you replied it had his original thread name was at the top of your post. I just had to go through and fix all that so I didn't have to delete the thread. You would get a message from us if you did anything ;) I'll see if I can go through and edit the reason for editing to make it more clear.

I doubt the vet would just hand me the meds but if they would then that is fine, there was a very good video by Ralph Davis on how to do a Baytril injection. Unfortunately the vet I would be seeing is only in Mon-Thur but he is VERY highly recommended.

Good, then you now exactly what is going to happen! There are few vets that will let you get he meds, so you're probably right. Lucky for me I live in a pretty rural area and can pick up meds for just about anything, even puppies, which I don't really agree with. The last time the vet actually gave our horses their yearly shots was the very first time almost 7 years ago! He even gives us mild tranqs and shots to put the mares into heat...kind of scary thinking about all the people who could have horse tanqs in their fridge... I'm one of them :shh:

Good luck though! Just keep those temps up!

I just checked on her again and the temp is around 88 ambient and 92 hot so I think that it's ok for now. I checked her throat again and no sign of bubbles or mucus this time, but she did sound like she wheezed for a second. >< This is so nerve racking, and I just can't figure out how the hell she got RI in the first place. Everything has been fine as far as I know.....I must have overlooked something.

Hmm, it's fairly common when breeding, even if you have everything perfect and your temps don't drop very low it still somehow happens. I'm not sure how common it is when you aren't breeding, if you have everything perfect. I'm guessing she just started the RI since you don't see much. Wheezing is a definite sign though. Do you know how cold your cool side gets? A good friend of mine got an RI at 75 degrees. It's not terribly low, but maybe if their immune system is already down for some reason, it's easy for them to get RI at that temp.

I don't yet have a thermometer for the cool side, I know that my hotspot never dips below 88 and my ambient is always above 84. So if I had to guess then the cool side might be 79 -80 but I have no real way of telling.

Btw BPs do yawn and sigh occasionally right? I have seen Hera yawn on several occasions after we got her and when she is around my neck I can sometimes hear her sigh. It sounds like a forceful exhale, I had heard that both of those are signs of RI BUT sometimes BPs do those things for the hell of it.

From my experience with the two RIs I've had in my collection. One due to cooling and the other came to me as a rescue really bad. You will certainly know an RI when they are very bad off. Pretty much once the snake gets mucusy they start coughing and trying to spit the yucky stuff out. When it's not to terrible it will sound like a crackle or a pop everytime they breathe. At that point you may be able to raise the temps a bit and avoid any further problems. But when they are really bad off they will certainly need antibiotics and beleive me it sounds so awful when they are that wheezy there's no mistaking it. Both got over them really quickly though which was very releiving bc I felt really awful when the rescued girl was just coughing and coughing and we had to wait a weekend to see the vet. Hope this helps.

My vet visit for an RI cost me around 120ish...
    47$--office visit
28$ per shot, for three shots spaced out every three days.
All in all not too bad. :P

Yeah I hope that I can just take her in, he looks at her, and says "no RI" and that's the end of it. Even though I know how to give her shots I still don't want to hurt her at all.

If she was near her water bowl when you picked her up, it is very possible that she had taken a drink from her water bowl soon before that. When they take a drink, especially a longer one, and are handled soon afterward, they tend to spit some of it back up in a slightly sticky mixture of water and saliva. Whether it's the movement of their body, the pressure against their digestive system or a combination of the two, it happens. I actually had it happen the other day when I was cleaning cages and one had been drinking some water. The bubbles in her mouth may just have been the watery-saliva mixing with the air the she was breathing. I don't want to say that there's no issue whatsoever and that you have absolutely nothing to worry about, but I do think that if the bubbles are now gone and she shows no other symptoms of an RI that you may be safe... Personally I'd bump your temps up just incase like you alread have done, and then just keep an eye on her for now.

yeah we are keeping an eye on her but I have to quit handling her for a bit sine she just went blue and is prepping for a shed. But so far no signs of RI since that initial scare. I didn't know what to think when it happened and all I could think was 'omg, omg, omg, omg" lol
