Snakes Dont Have Personalitites! Lie!
I have heard from countless people the remark that snakes are stupid pets due to the fact that they don't have personalities. And i say thats a bunch of BS! I currently only have 2 snakes but i have had many more snakes in the past. Im glad i can say that snakes do have personalitites!
For example My normal male is the total opposite of my female pastel. He needs to figure out what everything is. He is just curios about everything. Oh and did i mention he needs to climb everything too?!?! Haha. He hardly gets spooked by anything anymore.
On the other hand my female pastel is the opposite. She will always find a comfortable spot to just hang out and look at her surroundings, and maybe take a little nap =P. She is still a little skiddish but is getting better.
There i started it off. Now it's your turn. Post your comments and some examples, of some of your favorite snakes personalaties.

Snakes don't have personalities. :taz:
They have snakonalities.
The certainly do seem to have a wide variety of temperaments, as well as different degrees of interest in their surroundings.

Snakonalities  Just some people will never understand. That's why i am glad that i have a love for snakes.

Re: Snakes Dont Have Personalitites! Lie!
I was one of those people who thought snakes really didn't have much "snakonality" (luv that...) until I brought our first bp home. And my hubby thought "why do you want a snake - they just lay there and do nothing". But Ella taught us differently in a hurry!
She climbs everything in sight at least once as if to test it's durability in her home.
She comes out of her hide when we put our faces to her glass as if to say "got mice???"
She tries to crawl up my sleeve almost every time I take her out.
She eats like a mad thing and comes shooting out the top of her tank and will snap at everything in sight til she eventually nabs the rat!
My hubby now says she has more personality than he does, lol.... :P:P:P

My snakes all have different temperaments. Zeus is very easily stressed out, he'll cruise all day long if you have to take him out for whatever reason. Louise isn't bothered by anything, she "enjoys" (I use the term loosely) being taken out and exploring a bit. She will go right back in her hide and chill out again. D*ck on the other hand is very flighty, he doesn't like to be handled and he definitely lets you know.

haha! thats funny because my pastel girl wont let you look at her while shes in her cage! But when shes out she begs you to look at her haha!

All of mine have diffrent temperments. My Adult redtail she can be your best buddy or she can be extremly moody. My little redtail thinks its 20ft long and bullet proof until you take him out to handle him then hes got to be nosey. (just a cocky little guy) My adult ball is just plane goofy and nosey as can be. My baby bp is a bottomless pit and will hiss at me at times but she can also be very nosey or just sit there, and do nothing. My retic as i have handled him very little can tell hes got a personality on him. WHen i was treating him he turned his head perked it up off the floor flickering his tounge looking at me like (what are you doing you dont make any sense at all)

Re: Snakes Dont Have Personalitites! Lie!
Mine are quite different. I find the boys have slightly more calm personalities while the girls are more active. i feel lucky, ive got 3 out of 4 that arent head shy and all are pretty relaxed. Havent been bit yet so feelin pretty good!
Mr Mustache (spider male) loves to get out, he enjoys being held (loves the warmth). he gets to his spot and just chills. Not head shy most of the time. Every so often he does get a little touchy about his head.
My normal male finds his spot, relaxes, gets bored, finds a new spot, chills, gets bored, finds a new spot.. and so on ;) He used to be very grumpy. When he was a baby he struck at the glass of his old tank quite a few times. I was worried i was going to get my first bite from him but never got me. now he is totally different.
Pastel female is a fart in a skillet, lays low for a little bit but then she is on the move! she wants to explore and go as far as i will let her. Sometimes though she does love to just sit in my hand. She isnt head shy at all and sometimes gets in trouble sticking her head in places, lol..
Big Momma (normal female) does NOT like to sit still. she is constantly moving and *hates* to be made to sit still. She will struggle and fight to get away. When i first got her she loved to curl around my neck and hang out.. then... i had to quit doing that cuz she started to squeeze a bit ;) when i quit letting her around my neck she no longer wanted to sit still. She is head shy and can get rather grumpy.

Re: Snakes Dont Have Personalitites! Lie!
I have almost 30 snakes now, and can honestly say they each have a unique temperament - or "snake-onality," LOL. :D A few examples:
- Toby the pastel is very calm, gentle, and his favorite place to "hang out" is around my neck (doesn't squeeze tightly). I'm not sure how to describe it or if this is even possible, but he seems to have a kind soul - you can almost sense it in his eyes.
- Mona the normal is outgoing, VERY strong/quick feeding response, and head-shy but never gets snappy about it; she likes to drape over my shoulders, and tucks her tail into my armpit for security.
- Betty the Miami phase corn is a brat, and would rather just be left alone; she loves to rattle her tail like a rattlesnake, and WILL bite if you give her the chance. All I can say is, at least she's pretty & has a good feeding response.
- James the Stimson's is my "wet noodle" snake, who hangs like a noodle when you hold him... no head-shyness whatsoever, in fact he seems to enjoy a nice head/chin rub. He also likes my hair, and wraps himself in it when I hold him.
- Finally I'll describe Charlotte, my yearling western hognose, who is probably the friendliest snake in my whole collection. The minute I go into my bedroom at night, she'll start to bump her nose against the lid for attention... so I'll let her out, and after a few minutes of wandering, she curls up against my leg & sleeps there until I'm ready for bed myself. Such a little sweetie!

my pastel wraps around my arm and rests his head on my shoulder lol its so cute!

This is a conversation I love to have with "nonbelievers" and something I touch on in the programs that I do and it always gets a lot of questions.
My favorite example from my own collection is from my big female burmese. If I touch her when she's resting, she'll hiss at me, coil whatever part of her body that I'm touching back, and then (for lack of a better description) "shove" me. She'll continue to do this until she gets tired of it (or gets tired of me laughing at her) and then she'll move, but it's fun to watch.
Even among different species there's absolutely a difference.... like the OP said about the ball python, my Macklots are both VERY curious and seem to always be aware of what's going on. This may not be the right forum to say this in, but that's in stark contrast to 3 of my 4 balls (the spider being the exception) which basically do just sit there and ignore the world.
-
My BP also ALWAYS wants to move around and climb. Occasionally she'll chill around my neck for an hour or 2 but most of the time shes climbing behind my ears and going in my hair. Or she's on the key board, climbing on thumb taks in the walls, going inside desk drawers, and also smelling my dogs face. Amazingly, she never bites him. Even when he licks her on the face!
But my Cal King has mood swings all the time. One hour she could be sweet and gentle, and the other hour she turns into a spawn of satan. Biting everying that moves. Even when she's not hungry. My baby cornsnake usually just wants to be left alone in her cage. But she also loves to climb and move around (because thats what cornsnakes do).
You are totally right.

This has just been on my mind a lot and I was debating wether or not to start this thread. I'm glad I did :cheer:

Of course they have personalities!
Hungry, and Not Hungry :D.
At least my personality changes between these two points ;).

Well them being hungry or not does affect their current mood that's for sure haha :P

my Cornsnake has either A.D.D. or A.D.H.D.
and the way my beardie sits on his log is like "Chyeah i know im a bad ass so what!" xD
-
Haha that's funny. It's kinda the same thing with my normal male bp. I will have him out all day with me and once i put him back he starts climbing around in his cage and stopping frequently to stare at me. Sorta trying to beg me to get him out again :D

LOL... I feel the same way about my corns sometimes. One of them is constantly cruising her tub, acting like she wants to come out - but if I open the tub, she suddenly gets all shy and rattly. Then my granite corn Eddie is food-obsessed, and will track your finger like prey EVERY time he sees you - not to mention, he's the fastest nommer in the history of snakes. I swear! :O

Re: Snakes Dont Have Personalitites! Lie!
i've only got 1 bp...for now, mwahahaha.
anyhow, she was quite feisty when frankie had her, from what he was saying she was striking all the time.
when i officially decided that it was her i wanted, he spent whatever time he could to just handle her to tame her down some. and i must say he did an awesome job. she has yet to strike at me, although yesterday she really gave my hand the "stink-eye" as i was taking temps in the terrarium.
she likes to think she's scary when she puffs herself up and hisses, lol. i would handle her just to show her she aint the bit scary she thinks she is but i think she's still digesting the rat she ate on sunday so...i'm not gonna really spend time holding her until friday-ish or maybe tomorrow, we'll see.
-
I'm thinking and thinking and I don't think I've ever heard anybody tell me they don't have personalities...
Even my snakephobic family thinks they're just plain evil - yeah, the devil personality. I mean, they're all Catholics - they think the snake gave Eve the apple that caused Adam and Eve to get kicked out of Eden. Definitely lots of personality there.
My bps have different personalities too. But, my favorite snake personality-wise is our hognose. He is a trip! Hissing like a cobra, rattling like a rattlesnake, striking with his snout... it is hilarious!
-
my male ball will poke his head out of wich ever hide he is in when i come home from work, as if hes saying welcome home. thats been goin on for about a month now and never fails.
also even during a full cloud over shed he will let me handle him whenever i want. no hissing no striking. he really loves me.
just thought i would share his "snakonality" lol
