    Whould you breed for free...
If you didnt make a profit would you still breed?I'm saying do all that you do with feeding the snake with the rats you buy or raise, and clean all of the cages.Would you still do it and pay for heating and all ,maybe miss some holidays cause of breeding and eggs.I would just to make and see all my own hatched morphs and to say yes for the love of the ballpythons..

I am not at that point yet, still got about a year to go. I am just wanting to see what my girls can make, not really to make money off them.

Yeah initially i had the intention of making money, but now i'm more so for just making my own morphs, realizing at the same time that i will invest a lot of money into it over time.

It's just amazing how easy reptiles breed and how we can mix and match different genes to make an amazing snake. That is what amazes me about it and why i spent thousands of dollars for my snakes.

A lot of us here, like myself, don't make money off of snakes. We breed so that, hopefully, we won't have to spend $1,000 for that pretty morph we want.

I will tell you straight up - and I can back this up with financials - you can make more money selling glow sticks/necklaces/bracelets/etc. during July 4th, halloween, Christmas, and New Year than breeding snakes. And all you have to do is order them bulk online and stand infront of Wal-mart during those seasons - just a couple weeks a year and that's it.

So, if this is all about money, unless your name is Brian Barczyk or similar, then you're in the wrong business. And I would even go so far as saying - even Brian wouldn't be in this business if it is all about the money.

If the only reason someone breeds is to make money they won't be breeding long. Breeding is something that you must love to have any real success. It shouldn't be about the money it should be about the challenge. Just my $.02.

When I got the idea to start breeding I didn't want to do it for money, and I still don't. I'm in it for the fun of it and for being able to work with my favourite species.

When your snakes breed and later you see the babies, that means you have done everything right, and that's more than money. My $0.02...

I am trying breeding just to see if I can do it! I think it would be cool to say those are my babies and if I make money then that will go on new morphs that I couldn't otherwise afford!

I want to make my own snakes for my own collection, im not sure why some people try to make money from having over 500 babies. Even if you sell one, or 2 a day they will be juvs by the time the last are gone.
At some point it seems some people loose the hobby feeling and go career, but if this was in the dog world you'd have a puppy mill and how good are those? snakes are pets.

When i have babies from a batch i am unable to care for id sell them but not at some prices ive seen id 1/2 it and still make something on the 3 or 4 that go to new homes with happy people not any person that finds a site with some money.

And yes i would give them free as well.

I'm doing it to be able to share it with my kids. This will be the first year for us so we're all crossing fingers and everything else we can that the locks we've witnessed are all good. :please:

I'm doing it and will be be in the negative this season. Hopefully my pastel girl goes but if not it's just a normal x normal/fire. Donating normals to NCSU herp club to help raise money so we can go on trips (herping and shows) and possibly help educate people outside of the campus itself.
I think most hobby breeders most likely either break even or are under most seasons. Mainly b/c they keep buying more snakes. haha
Like a friend of mine says "It's not all about the money"

Its the thrill of making killer combos and hoping for crazy beautiful babies to pop out. The ones I sell are purely to maintain my expensive hobby. No one complains about a little extra cash in their pocket. Its even better when that wasn't the goal.

This is pretty much how I feel too. It's nice when your hobby can help support itself and/or put some money back in your pocket.

No. I would still keep snakes as pets, but I would not breed them. Breeding is much more time consuming than some would think, especially if you raise your own rodents.

I really think the answer to this question will depend on what level of breeding that particular breeder is at. Smaller breeders put in much less time/money that what a larger breeder would do. For the number of snakes I have...I would have no problem doing it for free. If I had several hundred snakes...Forget about it. That would be way to invloved and time consuming to do it as a charity. I'm sure that doesn't mean one of us loves these animals more than the other...It just wouldn't be practcal to do it for free as a bigger breeder.

Ive never bred before, but hopefully will sooner or later. And the reason is definitely not for the money. Im so interested in the genetics, and hopefully being able to create an awesome snake. To think something like the combo of two yellow bellys can create a white snake just fascinates me.

I did breed birds awhile ago, and I definitely spent more of my own money than I made.

Everyone should start out breeding for free, if you can't handle making no profit, get out of it now, because even if you're lucky you won't be seeing lots of $$ for years after you start.

Words of wisdom for most businesses and hobbies.;)

I am buying nice babies to make me the morphs I can't really afford, or at least I hope too! I'm doing it for the self satisfaction! I know I will sell some of my babies! But, don't know if it will ever be a big profit maker!

Re: Whould you breed for free...
I did it for the money at one time. Now I just do it for the fun of it, the love of snakes and for the feeling you get every time one hatchs out. If I get lucky I can tread off or make a little money to buy the next snake on my list of wants.
