thats a really pretty horse!!
but i thought they slept standing up?

Yeah i thought they slept standing up also!!?? Shows how much i know! What a good looking horse!

Thank you all :)
Horses can sleep standing up, but they don't sleep "deeply" then. They just lock their joints.
However, horses do need some deep sleep as well, and they do need to lay down for that. Granted, they don't do it for long periods of time, and they will ONLY do it if they feel safe somewhere. Some horses that do not feel safe enough in a location to lay down and get some deep sleep, will actually get exhausted in time.
Dymond usually only lays on her chest for a nap. She will eventually rest her chin on the ground and then her head will shake and jerk like those kids that fall asleep at the dinner table, LOL. Some horses will actually lay flat down and even snore, very funny !!!
On very cold days or after a cold night, they love to lay down in a sunny spot, too. Thats what she was doing today. She has enough trust in me to stay laying down while I sit down with her. Horses that lay down and sleep are vulnerable in the wild and being a prey animal, they have not lost those instincts of always being ready to run at perceived or real danger. Run first, ask questions later, usually ;)
Horses don't stay laying down very long, because it is harder for them to breathe that way. Every time I see a horse laying down (esp. mine) it makes me nervous at first, because they will do it when they colic, too. But I could tell she was just enjoying a bit of sun, plus there were several other horses doing the same :)

wow i didn't know any of that!!! thats really cool!!
but i mean still, it shows you the kind of person you are willing to put so much time money effort and commitment into these animals! thats awesome!

Thank you :)
Thats why I like this forum, there are other committed owners of beautiful animals, whether its horses, cats, dogs or..snakes :)
I think each and every creature we welcome into our homes and hearts should get our 100% commitment to do right by.
In a perfect world, of course ;)

Re: someone was sleepy...
Those are amazing pictures! She looks so relaxed and peaceful! And you look radiant! :D
There's a home just around the corner from my house that has two beautiful horses in the pasture around their house. One is a really dark color...almost black, but you can see deep red/brown in the sunlight...not sure what its called...and the other is a gorgeous gray appaloosa. Anyhow...drove past one day on my way to an appointment and saw the dark one laying down on her side right beside the fence...the gray was chomping away at the grass nearby and didn't seem the least bit concerned. But it freaked me out a bit! If I hadn't been running late, I was seriously tempted to turn up their driveway and knock on the door. I looked for them on my way back, and both were up chomping away at the grass. Much relief!!
Now I know she was probably just enjoying a warm spot of sunlight on a cool day. It's a very peaceful area with very little traffic, so I guess she feels pretty comfortable there. Nice to know!! :gj:

The brown one might be a "dark bay" or a "liver chestnut", both very pretty colors !!
I totally understand, I've been through quite a few colics (2 were my horses) and a horse laying down always gives me a fright at first. But esp. in cooler weather they will do it more often, find a sunny spot and "sun bathe" :)
That is very nice of you to have noticed and wondered about it, horses tend to get themselfves into trouble a lot, and an extra pair of eyes on them is always appreciated :)
If they lay down and roll a lot, breathing hard and looking sweaty and "un-happy" its usually colic, and an emergency. Some colics seem to go away with a bit of pain meds and care, but then there are those that just keep getting worse and end badly. Scary thing is, you never know which one it is in the beginning.
There is that one horse next to Dymond, he is still a baby at 1 1/2 years old, he likes to lay down flat out and snore, LOL. I can do my chores and make a bunch of noise, or even sit down near him, he doesn't care. He is such a happy go lucky little clown :)
