What the Heck is Up With "Fatal Attractions" On Animal Planet?
Its like almost every episode is dedicated to snakes, or some type of reptile. I saw 2 the other day. One was about a girl who liked snakes. Especially venomous ones. She FREE HANDLED them every day. Then she eventually got bit by her Gaboon Viper (beautiful snakes) and died. When they found her body, the police killed ALL OF HER SNAKES, to be able to "match" the fangs with the bite marks. This especially pissed me off. I'm sure they could test the blood to see which snake bit her. Even if they couldn't test the blood, does that really give them an excuse to kill ALL of her snakes just to find the ONE SNAKE that bit her? It just seems that they wanted an exuse to kill all of them.
Then theres the one where a guy is strangled by his Burmese Python. The whole time it was about how "deadly" they were. But luckily at the end they actually mentioned that he was high, drunk, and stupid while handling the snake. He was also trying to be cool showing off his gaint snake to his girl.
I don't see any episodes about "deadly" dogs. Dogs kill more people a year than snakes, so why not show an episode about a dealdy dog hmm? Oh, yea, thats right, dogs are cute and furry, so that makes them compltely harmless right?
I though animal planet was supposed to give a good name to animals, not advocate fear and hatred towards them.

There was one with wolves. I think that show is awesome. anyone who freehandles venomous snakes or lives with free roaming monitors deserves to be on there. thats insane. those people think there vipers or nile moniters love them haha well history shows thats not the case. HUGE FAN OF FATAL ATTRACTIONS, I will agree at times it is a lil bias or portrays snakes negatively. but u cant argue that those people are crazy, especially the bear lady hahaha wow.
-
I think Bellabob was trying to say that the show portrays these poor decisions as if it's the animal's fault for being handled or cared for poorly. Yes, those people deserve to be humiliated, but I wish that Animal Planet would mention that there are thousands of responsible animal handlers/owners out there who look down on risky husbandry practices

Re: What the Heck is Up With "Fatal Attractions" On Animal Planet?
i watch that show all the time and they talk about how people make bad decisions which lead to their death. like that chick with the gaboon viper, she got bit by her rattlesnake but it was a dry bite so she thought she was immune to their venom because she thought they had some special relationship. people on there with per bulls who get trampled and killed. a guy who went into his burmese pythons enclosure to cuddle with it and it killed him. they said the guy didnt feed it or take very good care of it and thoughts what caused it. or the old lady who had wild bears as pets but would go outside and hang out with them and feed them until they dragged her away and ate her. animal planet doesnt have many good shows but fatal attractions doesnt make only the animals look bad, they talk about how stupid people are too.

my thoughts exactly. I love the show, they mainly focus on the peoples ignorance or misbeliefs. I like how they have friends and families describe there friedns mishaps comedy. the wolf lady was insane though and that WHITE indian dude hahaha he was awesome like wlaking bear or somthing that guy was a kook and even he said his friend was nuts. she wanted to "walk amoung the wolves" well she did and now shes dead, these animals have insticts that cannot be curved. O AND THE ORANGATANG (spelling) dude that one was hectic the phone call was all he is eating my friends face POOR lady she thought it was her kid. i understand how people get wrapped up in this but animals are well animals. kind of a tangent sorry i just get pumped talkin about this show. and im mad i missed the burmese python one that sounds like a good one hahaha!

Animal Planet was infiltrated by humaniacs a long time ago. It shows in their programming-- all of their programming with the exception of a few shows like Dogs 101 is geared towards highlighting the negatives of the human-animal bond with very little effort towards showing the positives.

I love that show personnally and I agree it shows the bad decisions people made and the stupid things they did that got them killed and all that, but I agree they should also have a part that shows that when those animals are handled appropriatly by responsible owners those situations can be avoided.
One episode showed a lady with big cats ( I don't remember if it was tigers or lions) and she did get killed by them, only to find out she didn't have the money to feed them anymore and was looking around for roadkills and stuff to feed them. The poor animals were emaciated and starving. If that lady had been responsible and really cared for her animals she would have surrendered them to a zoo or something where they could be taken care off.
-
It was tigers where the lady had the big cats lookin for road kill. If you watch close and pay attention to the ones with the snakes. Its the handlers own doing for biting/constricting them. Animal is not taken care of. Owner is being stupid being drunk or high tryin to show off a half starve burmese, and burmese are like garbage disposals as it is. Anyone who handles venomous snakes is honestly got to have a few screws lose, and its just a matter of time before they get bite. A venmous snake will never tolerate handling the way a constrictor does.

Personally not a fan of the show at all. Yes it may show that the owner made mistakes but it mostly glorifies the "bad" pet stigma. For the average person watching the show...they walk away with ...Oh its crazy to own snakes/lizards. Then all of a sudden anyone who owns snakes is crazy and we are all going to get eaten and then it will come after me. Seriously!! Everytime the average joe hears I have pythons....we go through the whole FL story with the 2 year old. They don't remember anything except wild python kills and eats girl. UGH!!
I was recently bitten on the lip by my iguanna. Did some damage probably should of had a couple of stitches. My stupid fault....totally! But there was no way I was going to the hospital. I could see the newspapers and hear the phone call from the show. Why did it bite me....my dumb butt was kissing it.... So instead I did my own fix it job.
All in all we have enough bad publicity and ppl glorifying accidents...we don't need a show on tv doing more.

I definately agree with Elizabeth on this one, but I did watch one episode that was bittersweet that I kind of liked.
It was a woman who was known to let her snakes roam loose in the room while she cleaned her snake cages...she also happened to do this with her gaboon viper :O (not the most intellegent thing to do, but I digress...)
Anyways, the inevitable happened, and she got bitten on the hand one day while cleaning. Apparently, she bled out, and died soon afterward.
She never called for help. Why? Because she didn't want her animals destroyed. She'd rather die than have the govenrnment come and kill her beloved snakes. :tears:
How amazing...truely the ultimate act of selflessness.

Update: My baby ball python massivle grows a bagillon inches every week and is going to turn into WORMZIRRA and take over the world.

Support Animal Planet is like supporting the HSUS directly, considering that's one of their biggest Advertisers these days...

I aggree with BPelizabeth, non reptile people see that and pass jugement on all of us. Not thinking that there are good pet / bad pet owners no mater the type of animal.

This. This answers everything. I'm sick of people going on "AP'S BEING BAD TO SNAKES/DOGS/PEOPLE/THE MOOD!" Get over it already guys; you ain't changing a thing.

What planet do you live on?? My beloved breed of choice in on just about every news station every day! Problem is that any dog that has short hair and a muscular build is labeled as a "pit-bull". No one knows what a "pit-bull" is as there is no definition of one anywhere because there is not a breed of pit-bull. They also do not want to learn the history or the DNA history of the American Pit Bull Terrier.
Sorry my A.D.D. kicked in, I didnt mean to high-jack your post but you hit a touchy subject with me.

I'm glad I'm not a grammar nazi, else my head might have simply exploded while reading this thread.
Don't they teach proper grammar in school anymore? Or is it a shift in our culture that accepts run-on sentences, fragmented sentences, misspellings and lack of punctuation in our writing as somehow 'normal' and acceptable? I'm not saying we should be 'all proper, all the time,' but sheesh...can't we take just a little extra time to make our posts readable?
:D I'm (mostly) just kidding around here. I know it's not that big a deal, but sometimes I do worry about the current state of the English language. ;)

It's interesting that you see the woman's abandonment of her survival instinct as an act of 'selflessness.' I love my snake, but no way do I sacrifice my life for it (or any other animal that might be under my care and control.)
I simply couldn't conceive of a mindset that would place an animal's welfare above my own. What if a 'hot' had bitten that woman's child? Would you advocate her not calling the authorities in that case as well?
Please understand that I'm not trying to sound critical here - I simply don't understand how anyone could feel the way you do about a situation like that.
Or perhaps I'm simply misinterpreting what you said?

that woman was a complete idiot who had lost her mind and should have never had those animals. first she started with rattlesnakes she captured in the desert and kept them as pets. when one bit her it was a dry bite and she thought she was immune to their venom. so then she got a gaboon viper from a guy in mexico and let it roam free at times in her trailer cuz she thought she had a special relationship with her snakes and even if she got bit she believed she was immune. the reason she didnt call for help is because the gaboon viper bit her and she had blood coming out of everywhere and she died very soon after. if she could have she should have and prolly would have called for help. and as for saving all the snakes, all of her snakes were destroyed anyway, i dont agree with why or how they did it but it happened. she got what she had coming to her and people like that just make our pets and respected animals look bad. i have no sympathy for her at all.

Maybe I misinterpreted the episode then...sorry if I upset anyone.

Yea, sorry. I'm not writing an essay or anything, so I don't pay attention to my grammar on online forums much.

Same here. And thank you, Maia, for caring about animals enough to make their well-being your vocation.

See I at least know my limitations....I am a total cuddle bug w my stuff....hence a hot...GTP....frogs ...etc would be out of the question for me...

I HATE "Fatal Attractions"! It's just a bunch of crazy people giving some types of animals a bad name when in fact people should not be keeping them as "pets" in the first place!
The only shows I will watch on Animal Planet are "Whale Wars" and "Animal Cops". My boyfriend likes "Monsters Inside Me" and while I find it fascinating to a degree it creeps me out too much to imagine myself getting those parasites! LOVE Whale Wars though....I even contemplated joining the Sea Shepherds!
