Just wanted to see if anyone had some tips for me???
OK, so i have a 20 long glass tank. I have a flukkers heat pad taped with aluminum tape to the bottom at the hide box side of the tank, and a 100 watt light at the other end over the water bowl. The substrate is paper and I keep it clean. I soak my bp's about every week and I feed them about every 5 days. I do not have a thermostat for the pads but it says they can not go past 100 degrees. And I dont think its to hot for them anyways. I keep the heat pad on when I go to sleep and I put the light on when I wake up. I turn the heat pad off when I turn the light on.
Is there anything I can do differently that might be better???

Re: Just wanted to see if anyone had some tips for me???
You really need a thermostat or rheostat for the UTH. The UTH can and will get to hot for your snake. There is also no need to soak your snake unless it has some stuck shed. Soaking can be very stressul for a snake.

Hi,
Have a read through our caresheet to get an idea of the way we normally recommend keeping them. :)

I would suggest putting the heat lamp on the same side as the UTH so that you will have one side that is always hotter than the other side - and not switch around from day to night. If you need added humidity, move the water bowl closer to the hot side.
-
Re: Just wanted to see if anyone had some tips for me???
First thing I suggest is getting a thermostat. If cash is tight you can get one for $40.00 at BigApple, this will be better than no thermostat. If using a screen top, cover it with foil or plexiglass or something to keep in the humidity (50-60% unless in shed, then 70-80%). Just leave some holes in it for ventilation. And like in the other post, no need to soak your snake that often. Usually only soak when they have a bad shed or when trying to get rid of mites. You want a cool side (78-85) as well as a hot side (85-93). And read the care sheets that the other poster mentioned.

ok will do. Thanks everyone for the usefull info. I am fixing to get a 20 tub rack before next month so I was thinking I could bipass all that. But I started seeing that the snakes where getting more stressed. So I will defintely use this info. Thanks again

Re: Just wanted to see if anyone had some tips for me???
Another thing is you probably don't need the heating lamp, because the uth will generally do it's job, and because snakes like ball pythons profit more from belly heat than from back heat (so heat they absorb from the ground and not heat from the ambient air), it helps them digest better.
Secondly, 100 is way too hot for a bp, the max it should ever get is 93 or 94. Thermostats are one of the most important herper tools, and as was said before, you don't need to switch the heating things during the day/night and you don't need to soak your snakes unless there's a problem.

Re: Just wanted to see if anyone had some tips for me???
Since you are planning on getting a rack, you will definitely need a thermostat for it, so you might as well get one now and use it on the tank, until you get the rack...

yea I would agree with you, however this is my position. My local snake breeding buddy is moving and getting rid of his hole collection. So i am buying a 20 tub cb-70 rack from him with flexwatt and a helix 1000. This will make my life so much easier but right now, I am working with what I have. Is there a really cheap temporary therm out there somewhere? And do you think the 100 degrees would transfer threw the glass at 100 or would it be less?

Glass gets crazy hot! So yes, I do think it would transfer, and since your'e using paper substrate it doesn't insulate it much either, so you should really just get a t-stat anyways, because it'll be better for you now.
Not to sound like the mean person here, but if you are absolutely set against buying a thermostat to take care of your ball python now, then maybe you shouldn't have gotten a ball python...

How many snakes are in this tank?
Don't take shortcuts - your snakes' lives could depend on it.

I dont take offense to it, but honostly Im not set on not buying one. I just wanted to see if theres any cheap ones. And yea Im pretty experienced with this stuff and I should have set up the rack system before but I got really good deals on some snakes. So I kind of jumped and got held into some minor set backs. But not to sound rude but I dont have any regular ball pythons anymore. Nothing against normals but all my snakes are morphs. I have owned snakes for 15 years and this was my first encounter with a heat pad. So I really didnt know much about how it would effect them. I knew flexwatt had to be on a therm. But I probably should have gotten one. I will look for something tommorow. but thanks everyone for the advice.

I have 4 each in 3 tanks. They are all babies. Gotta get another rack to get them situated. Just needed to make something temporary for them. But im going to get a therm tommarow but i need to make sure it fits to 3 connections. I am getting this ars rack in about a month so I dont want to spend to much on it!!!

Re: Just wanted to see if anyone had some tips for me???
There are less expensive ones like the one at Big Apple, I think its like $40.00. Hell, a table top dimmer would be better than nothing. Can get that at Home Depot for like $16.00. Thats what I used for about a month untill I got my Herpstat II. Just have to watch the temps. a little more.
http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...atalogId=10053
Like I said, this is better than nothing! It will cut down the power going to your heating device, but you will have to monitor the temp. as it is not a thermostat. As long as the room has a steady temp. it should be fine.

With 15 years experience, I'm really surprised that you hadn't planned for husbandry as basic as a thermostat to control the heat pad (which DOES go much higher than 100 degrees, btw).
At this point, I would think that money shouldn't be an object to protect your investment of 12 morphs. :confuzd:

My pastels become my normals. And dont lie thats where everyone wants to be! LOL. Dont hate!!

yea but the thing is all my snakes are doing fine.I just got a little zilla thermostat so its all good. But thanks for pointing it out to me. My snakes are my pets and when you all talk like im heartless to them you are wrong.LOL. I have a relationship with all of my snakes just as well as everyone here and everyone should. Enjoy your bp's and dont worry so much about trying to lash back at someone who said they could use a little help. Thats from the most experienced to the least. sometimes you dont know who you are talking to until its to late and then you got 2 experianced herps arguing about nothing just from an assumption. I have seen it a few times here. Just be aware of it.

First off, you imply that Robin's collection is somehow inferior to yours because she has normals and you don't? I know for a fact that Robin has spent years very carefully selecting each and every snake she owns and she has, in fact, one of the finest collections I know of for its size. The last thing in the world for her to be is jealous of YOU.

And here...no one said you were heartless, and NO one is "lashing out" at anyone. If you think this is "lashing out" then I think you've quickly forgotten your experience at another site. People are simply concerned about your apparent lack of desire to do what it takes to ensure your animal's safety. No one can read your mind or your intentions....only the very words you type here and nothing more.
YOU asked for help...and help was offered. It's not "expert vs. expert" in this situation and it boggles the mind that you would consider it so. But if it were, personally, I'd put Robin's expertise up against yours any day. YOU are assuming way too much....and not presenting yourself in a way that will make many friends at all. It's entirely up to you if you want to continue in this direction...but if you want real respect from those you interact with here, or at any site...then you need to tone down the rhetoric and self-congratulatory attitude.

Re: Just wanted to see if anyone had some tips for me???
Trust me, with your attitude here, you won't have to worry about sales from this site. Memories run long, and people will choose NOT to do business with you with your "I'm better than you" attitude.
You're asking beginner questions, but then brag about your experience level.
I saw your demise and self imploding on another forum, I would have hoped that you had learned from that and didn't repeat that behavior here. Perhaps my expectations were set too high.

maybe so, and i took there advice. I never said i wasnt going to get a therm infact i got one this morning. I also never ment to be relayed like what you took it. I think its great that she is all about quality and thats what im doing to. Like i said, its not that im bashing her or calling her inferior. I am just simply saying that thats what I wanted with my collection and thats what I did. Again, its hard for me to relay my message in a forum i guess because im new to them. More of what I was trying for is to gently explain that im not a first time herp and you can talk to me like i know a bit instead of me being a beginner. You people need to realize that if you dont give eye to eye respect then i will look down every time. Its a natural reaction. And while I might be someone who speaks his mind and never second guesses that, I never try and put anyone else down. The only reason why the other forum was a problem was because people who will not be named, talked down at me and acted in a very unprofessional manner. And I got angry. Thats it, and its niether here or thier. Cant help that out of thousands of people some will just be out of thier minds. And as far as friends go, how is it that i am friends with many huge breeders and we get along just fine? Just calm down peoples this is not a reason to panic...LOL

wo wo wo, I was not putting you down at all. You were putting me down remember. I asked a question that I didnt know. Thanks for the advice, but you miss understand. I am no better than the beginners and no worse then the vets. I am equal to everyone and I believe you must have read this all wrong. I fyou believe that I can only learn from you and you cant learn from me then you have a bad understanding. You think that you come off trying to be superior sometimes in a forum? Its hard to tell because the words are just words. Your feelings are not felt. Misrepresentation. I took your advice and I thank you. But I never ment to critisize you. Your theme of quality is what we all should be doing! Thats key! I wish you all the luck in the world!

Dont take what I say to much to fact. i tend to over do it sometimes but thats just me. I have fun all the time. If you new me you would think very different. I think the problem is that people have taken my words to heart to much. Again, its a forum and not a confrence call. People over at BLBC T'd me off from the get go when they said to me I had horrible spelling and I need to spell better. So I did and they started a thread about me not being able to spell and how its the public schools fault! You can not judge until you have hurd the hole story.

ok im going into the time out room. LOL. Yea i hear ya but you gotta stop talking to me like i am a little kid. More trouble? Why is it not "hey cool out on this convo and you will be good." Or something relating to that. Please people, understand that I never lied about anything. I never acted like i was better than you, and I never put anyone down. But why is it ok for others to put me down? The critics out there are ruining me. Stop thinking of me of some complicative child and see that i am just talking and most of the time with a little sarcasm. Im a good peoples im not a bad guy! Im just from a different generation then you! LOL!!!:D

you know the only reason that I come off like this is because you all know what happend at BLBC. Everyone is hopeing for me to screw up because its fun to see someone get mad. Well please guys, I am trying to be better then I was when I did that. But if I dont feel respect from this forum then I sertainly wont enjoy it. What am I supposed to do? Act like I dont know the difference between co-dom and ressesive? Im just saying. Just say you will give me respect and everything will be good. No more talking down comments just I will give you respect and I hope we can come to an understanding.

I have to say, coming from an outsiders perspective, you began with the talking down first.

Someone...I don't care who...big, famous movie-star breeder....can come on here and talk down to me and disrespect me...and it won't change how people here see me because ~I~ have built my own reputation and no one else has the power to tear that down but me.
Only YOU can build your own reputation, and it WON'T happen over night or with a scant handful of posts, no matter how badly you wish it were instant. Handle yourself with dignity and humility and restraint, and that is what people will see, no matter what anyone else says to you.

Ok lets see if i can explain REALITY to you. When you come to a forum WE have no idea who you are or what you REALLY know.So its your job to show PROPERLY your level of experiance here.We only go by what we read.So far you have shown you are NOT as experianced as you would like us to think. If you had 15yrs experiance as you say you would KNOW how to PROPERLY control heat output on your heat sources.WE DO NOT HAVE TO RESPECT YOU! RESPECT IS EARNED! So stop with the i think i am a bigshot attitude!
-
From what I gather of what you are trying to say, you don't want to be seen a a newbie?
Fine. Then introduce yourself, tell us more about yourself, tell us more about what you know and how long you've been doing this.
The perfect avenue for that is here:
http://ball-pythons.net/forums/forum...oduce-Yourself!
After that is done, relax a bit.
Enjoy the scenery... Enjoy the people who post up their snakes.
No one is out to get you... It's about learning and growing and enjoying Ball Pythons.
Don't get defensive. Don't jump to conclusions. Don't treat people like you DON'T want to be treated.
Just take it for what it's worth, learn from it, and move on.
It makes life that much more satisfying.

Re: Just wanted to see if anyone had some tips for me???
Hi,
Just one point I think might be worth making.
Most threads are read in isolation. By that I mean when we work through the boards and see a question we think we can help with we don't go look at everything posted by the thread starter to see if they are a new keeper or someone who has kept them for 40 years, we tend to just give the best answer we can at the time.
For a lot of us that includes putting in qualifiers and related information that turned out to be needed the times we answered similar questions before. This certainly can make it feel as though people are responding as though you were a "noob" when that was not their intent.
The way that helps me deal with it is to simply take the information and the intention to help, thank them for that, and try and disregard any subtext or assumptions that I do not feel apply to me. :)
When you next post a thread there is a better than average chance that the responders will not have read your posts in this thread explaining your level of experience or that you felt talked down to with some of the advice or questions.
It helps if you can keep that in mind when you respond I find.
As anyone who knows me will confirm my tounge is better suited to sandpaper than silk but since I know they are trying to help, when they really don't have to bother their backsides with me or my problems, I try and respond in kind.
Not always succesfully mind you - but I try.

How do you know that it's the only ball python I've ever had? Besides that, after saying that you have kept ball pythons for 15 years, you should know that the morph doesn't matter and that you should have a thermostat for your heating devices and that 100 degrees is too high.

I put a repyile rug underneath the pad and it was a hope that I didnt have to spend anymore money on it. Honostly I didnt mean anything by it except I wanted you to know that its not like I went out and bought a bp just last week. You were kinda rude about how you said it but i cant say much about being misunderstood on a forum. I know your intentions where good. And yes, morphs do matter when you are trying to breed them. Its a matter of makeing a few hundred or a few hundred thousand. Or at least we would hope. Owning a snake is different. My favorite snake evr was one of my old normals star. She was 16 years old and she had the best disposition of any snake I have evr owned. I am just happy that you could share a passion for snakes as I do.

Okay, you know what? I'm done with this. Hope all goes well for your breeding, and I hope that maybe you can get some respect on this site, if that's what you wanted.

Two points I'd like to make - both are bolded.
1) You did put people down by pointing out that YOU don't have any normals, but they they ONLY had a normal and then pointed out that I had a lot of normals on my site and you have none (which came off as being a braggert). I presume you didn't look at my journal and only "The Nest" (which admittedly desperately needs to be updated). And you implied because I had a lot of normals and you didn't, that somehow your collection was somehow superior to mine.
It's great that you're excited about your collection of 12 animals and you're just starting out in this business at a relatively young age (22 is young to me). But when you insult (and your words were insulting, whether you intended them to be or not) others because they have normals in their collection, and toot your own horn about your animals as if they are somehow "better" than normals and that normals are "beneath" you now - you're also insulting all these large breeders you espouse to be so close with. They all have normals in their collections and their normals are a very integral part of their yearly breeding plans.
At the end of the day, our mutations are still ball pythons just with a different paint job. Being a mutation doesn't make them any more precious than a normal.
2)
The phantom "critics" are not ruining you. At some point you need to figure out what the common denominator is with your troubles on forums. And that would be you. YOU need to take responsibility for your own actions on forums and stop and think "what is it about my posting style that causes others to react this way to me?".
Instead of puffing out your chest and telling people they don't know who they're talking to, and demanding that they treat you with respect, you may want to think about being a little more humble and respectful in your posts as well. No one is impressed with an internet "tough guy". Instead, it has the opposite effect than what you desire. You LOSE respect when you DEMAND respect. Respect is earned, it's not bullied or forced out of people.
Also, no one is really impressed with WHO you know. They're impressed by how you decide to present YOURSELF. That's all. Many of us here are friends with different "big guys", we just don't find it necessary to point it out in a post to prove any points.

Joe - is it necessary to be antagonistic?

Ok I was not trying to impress anyone and I am not trying to act like a tough guy. I have been there done that. This is me. I say what I say but I will try and improve on what I say. If you really think you havent done anything look how you are talking to me. Look how your friend is insulting me. If you believe that you are right about that then you are way wrong. I admit that I need to work on how I come off here but please understand that you have said way to much and altercated a bigger viewing of this thread. So if you believe that you are right than think about it. You are being just as combative as me. Now lets shut it down and maybe one day we can talk eye to eye but I assure you right now you are making me mad with your insults. Like I said I am not a kid, maybe young but not a kid. Our experiances of life are all different. I might know a lot more about other things then you. But it doesnt matter. I said what I said and corrected it and you continued. What does that say on your behalf?

Re: Just wanted to see if anyone had some tips for me???
Tis a very nice Pastel and would be a great addition to anyones collect. As far as your experience or lack there of (I don't have a opinion on this at all, mainly because I don't know you), just sit back and let all that this site is wash over you. I have only kept BP's for 3 years next month, and I can tell you I find new ideas and ways of doing things everyday. I think you will find that this site suits you very well and that with time you will be excepted as much as the next guy. I hope you enjoy this Forum as much as I do every day.

Re: Just wanted to see if anyone had some tips for me???
Ok i read the whole thread.
zbyers7 trust me ur arguing with the wrong people. I tried it once and lost. And ended up with 90/100 infraction points. I was in the wrong. But trust me man its not worth it to keep it up. Just move and and drop it.
You dont have to respect them. All u have to do is NOT disrespect them. Simple as that :)
Now reading this whole thread noticed u said u did not need normals ur pastels are ur normals. If your friends with so many big breeders why are you talking crap about them? :-/
big boas and ball keepers all have normals pretty much. Its a common thing in a collection. And them normals get bred quite a lot for being "normals"
To me a normal is the best thing u can own. Its the base form of the animal we all love.
Its up to you man save ur reputation and save urself the head ache and infraction points if it gets that far.

Thanks man, but i think I have to clear up the normal thing real quick. The reason why I want to have all pastels instead of normals is a personal choice. Its not about who has the best collection and who doesnt. That is just what i want for me. I have fires and yellowbellys to because i want to clean the morphs up. Thats just something that goes threw my head. Its more personal. I did not mean to offend anyone that has them. Thats just how my brain works on it. If I have clean pastels then I will have clean pastel morphs. If I have clean fires or yellowbellys than my morphs will be cleaner. Its me doing me. A classic example of it. LOL.:D
