I know exactly how you feel, sucks not being able to find a job. I have been looking for a job now for almost a year and still nothing, and it is very frustrating to see all these people younger than me and who have less experience getting jobs...

Yeah. It sucks. I have a great job now, but two years ago I was jobless. The hard part is finding someone to hire you without a degree, and willing to pay you more than minimum wage.

I don't see how anyone can live of min wage anyway. It's ridiculous. Hang in there.

That's terrible. Especially if you are paying off student loans. Now those are total rip offs.

I wish I had places to look for a job. I have been laid off since dec of 08 and been collecting unemployment since feb of 09. There just isn't anything out there, well around here anyways. So I too can relate in some ways.

You ask to borrow the money, they lend it to you with a deferred payment plan at low interest. What is the rip off part?

Just do not forget to Follow up! Thats the important thing( And this is coming from an 18 year old who in 7 days is going to have his own apartment, so I get how you feel about how some people take jobs for advantage.) The place I am working for now took several calls from me to get things rolling, I applied for around 10 jobs and only got one call back, and that's not even the job I got :P Yet I followed up on all of them and could have gone to five or six interviews. Sometimes even if they need someone new to work for them, they will push aside your Application and forget about it until you call asking about it.

I have a five day rule, First I go in asking the MANAGER if they are Hiring OR accepting Applications, most will tell you up front if they are looking for someone or not when asked that question. If they just say Accepting Applications, they may still be looking for someone. After I turn the Application in, I call back in five days asking for an update on it. Most told me that they had not even looked at it yet, and would promptly now that I called. Again if they do not call back, try again in five days. you honestly have to get on to them about looking at it, in a polite way. If you just turn in an app and expect them to call you back the next day, with no follow ups, you will be in for a rude awakening.

It is also good to follow up in person, they cant deny you the Manager if you walk into the store and ask for one face to face. And even then it is easier because they know you are serious about wanting the job. One place told me they had not set up interviews yet because they had to wait until all three managers where at the store at the same time, which for some reason was proving difficult. They stuck my Application on top of everyone elses though. I went back three times to see when they were going to look at them, and met all three managers :p I think my chances where pretty good. I really wanted to work there but I got the call back a day after I got a different job

Its cheaper that way though..... thats why there was such a big demand for new teachers, they were getting rid of the old ones because they got too expensive.

    anywho

Even if its a job that you would never work, money is money and in this economy, even flipping burgers is better than nothing, even if you have a college education.... though its sad.

I am been laid off work for a year now. I am a Phlebotomist, and a culinary school graduate. Next year after I finish my B'S in Psychology I am going to graduate school. I have filled out and sent my resume to over 100 jobs. I am overqualified for most jobs, they say, or don't ever even take my calls. If there are 200 other people who also sent in apps and resumes, then I can only hope I hake a better impression than the next guy. (Or girl in my case)

When you borrow 10K and end up paying about 30K. I just think they make a lot of money off of them. And, it is the only thing that you can't write off on bankruptcy if life goes terribly wrong.

I understand with a college degree you should be in a higher paying bracket, and that's why college is so expensive. It just doesn't always work like that. Anyone should be able to go to school. I could only go for 3 yrs and they wouldn't loan me anymore because my parents made too much money. Even though they were in debt themselves. So I borrowed 5K for each semester, and owe about 40K.

Between interest rates, and late payments. It's hard paying off that much making $8 an hour. The longer it takes to pay, the more interest stacks on. That's why you should always make more than the minimum payment on a credit card. Interest. & not using my forbearance like I should have. Honestly when I couldn't go back my 4th year I was so mad I refused to pay them, and just threw the letters away. Well, it catches up to you.

Many moons ago, I took out my first mortgage for $20,000 (a very inconsequential amount for a mortgage today). I then learned what an amortization schedule was and was very unhappy to learn that if I payed my loan off in the 30 years of the life of the mortgage I would have repaid $69,000.
I learned to always find out the total payback price before borrowing for anything. Do you think that if you take out a loan for a car with a purchase price of $30,000 on a 6 year loan that you are really paying $30,000 for the car?
Any loan tallies up that way. If you can't bear to pay the interest, you shouldn't approach the lender and ask them for a loan.
I can surely understand that you don't enjoy paying back the money, but I just can't view it as a ripoff when the loan was made as a result of your instigation and you signed papers agreeing to the terms.

And for edification, let me add that I have a son with a mortgage of his own and has a wife and young son, who has been unable to find a job in more than a year and whose unemployment compensation has run out. He has now returned to school because of the dismal job market in Michigan.

There is a big difference in wanting a house or a car, and wanting to go to college so bad you've dreamed about it all senior year. It's hard to understand without the cash, your just another dropout.

Sorry for hijacking your thread dude. Yeah, job hunting stinks.

I've been a nursing assistant for 7 years. 2 years ago I took a phlebotomy certifficate program because I've been burnt out on the nursing thing...haven't been able to find a job in phlebotomy yet!..and I've applied. wish I could get all my sticks in to sit for the test although its not required in most states as of yet but probably will be over the next few years...it would be a step up for me although the pay is the same...I'd rather be drawing tubes than trying to change crappy diapers on 200 lb+ people as they're calling you names and trying to punch and kick you...

if anyone needs a job take an lna/cna class. you'll have no problem finding a job...turnaround rate is very high..I've been at my current job for a year and I've seen so many people come and go in unreal!...and the job application process has been quite easy...walk in ask for an app...walk out with your schedule in hand...its happened to me several times!

Well I don't have a college degree. I do have a house and a car.
Personally I wouldn't trade my house and cars for the college degree. But we all have different priorities. Walking around with a degree and no where to live I would be another homeless guy.

Honestly, If I was a young person trying to find a job in this economy I would probably join the military. I in fact did that when I was a young guy with no prospects.

Not as easy to get in the military.... if anyone screwed up anywhere, its almost impossible to get a waiver for it.

Before I was a phlebotomist I was CNA on a surgical floor, so I know all about changing diapers. I do want to say that all those people who will kick you as a CNA will do the same if not worse sometimes when you have to wake them up at 3am with a needle! You will make more money, but it is still hard sometimes to deal with being abused. I have decided all nursing/clinical work ends in getting beat up sometimes!

OP, just keep trucking man. In this economic environment, you've just got to keep your head up and spamming your resume/applications. Something WILL come along. I promise.

I fully understand how much it sucks right now though. I graduated from a fantastic school with a degree in finance and economics and I only recently took a job which ended up being leaps and bounds better than I'd imagined. You'll find something. Just keep your head up and try not to get discouraged.

The job hunt is horrible, I definetly know what you mean. Thats why you gotta think more school, doing your own thing, or both, if your that type of person. There are many services that only require low costs to start up and really require a go-getter type of attitude. Just for example, pressure cleaning. If you dont have enough money to start something up you can rent the equipment as the jobs come to save money. Another good thing about a service like this, and there are many others, is that you can be extremely competitive with your rates. This is the best time for these services to boom because many people dont have jobs, but they still need to maintain and take care of there things.Hope this helps a bit. Good luck on your hunt and remember when there is a will there is a way.

Lol I hear some of this and I have to laugh. For some of us the military isnt an option. I tryd and need waivers they arnt giving right now. I was laid off aug of last year and my unemployment ran out. Im tryn to get back into school to finish out my paramedic dagree. But you guys who are complaining about the old guy you deal with. I had to go back to bouncing even tho I really didnt want to. To me bouncing is like flipping burgers but you make less and get hit. Im 5'8'' 150 lbs and CRIPPLED (6lbs of metal in my leg and the knee on my other leg is blown out) So, wanna tarde jobs lol.

I was out of a job from Dec 08 to just two weeks ago. I picked up babysitting for a friend for a miniscule amount of money and was also on unemployment. I applied everywhere! Followed up like a maniac. Unfortunatly people just aren't hiring... It sucks. I got my current (on call) job only because my BF works for the company and he was able to give me a heads up on the job. Having a good referral from one of their employees didn't hurt at all ;)

I contemplated going to school. The community college around here is packed and the waiting list for courses are packed as well. I was checking out a vocational school... But paying $25,000 to make $9.00 just does not compute. People are raised to believe that if you go to school you're going to get a job. That's not the case anymore.

I do hate it when people go get money and complain because they dont enuf to get more clothes that they need. I mean my brother spends all him $ on shoes and has 13 pairs. I think that is crazy. But then again i use my money on bps so we all have diffrent intrests but yea go to mcstate.com all call a couple of your local mc Donald's. Good luck :)
