Reasonable sized python?
Hey guys!
Well, first off im turning 17 on the 19th. So I decided to get a ball python. upon this decision I have discovered that I LOVE snakes much more than I ever thought I did :snake: :snake: :snake:
I am already looking forward to buying a SECOND snake in a few months! And I was wondering what a good sized python is?
I love the look of carpet pythons, ect but I think thier size is a little to much at the moment!
Is there a python that will get to lets say.... a size that is manageable by one person?
Thanks in advance for any help!
-
Re: Reasonable sized boa?
sorry.. wrong thread title. Meant python LOL, not boa :) (also any mention of boas in the thread was meant to be python, sorry im out of it today)
-
Re: Reasonable sized boa?
Whats a Blood Tail Python?
Do you mean a Blood Python? Or a Short-tailed Python?
Those are probably not the best beginner snake

Yeah sorry that was a mistype lol, I was just waking up when I made this thread and said blood tailed boa instead of blood python
And I agree, id rather get something a lot smaller. like 8 feet would be a good size

Re: Reasonable sized python?
fixed those errors for you :)
-
Re: Reasonable sized boa?
Well Bloods and Short Tails dont get anywhere near 8 feet, but they still wouldnt make a good beginner snake.
A carpet might fit the bill:gj:

Yeah ive heard about carpet pythons, althought I only really know about the Juguar and Jungle carpets, are those the ones that get to be about 8 foot?
Also, if I do get a carpet python how much will they weight at adult age/size (when they are like 8 - 9feet) and will they be 100% manageable by one person?
Thanks again!

Re: Reasonable sized python?
Also another question, Lets say I cant get ahold of a carpet python in my area, what other pythons are there that get to be similar lengths?
Like 7 - 9 feet is not that bad, But I hear 12 feet+ is unmanageable by one person. so anything 10 or below is fine
Any recommendations on what otherp ythons I could get that are like 7 - 9 feet? I wont be getting it anytime soon. A few months down the line after I get my ball.
Because I can work with my parents so money isnt an issue.

Re: Reasonable sized python?
most people wouldn`t recomend my first snake which was a Burm. he took 6 years to get to be around 11 feet. being a male, they don`t get as big as a female would. I feed him jumbo rats and chickens. For your age, maybe not a good idea, though it takes a little while for them to get that big. I have as you may already know a ball, a blood, and the burm. I also have a pastel redtail, which is not a python, but she is just as darling. and they don`t get that large. I have a female, so I`m waiting to see just how large she will get. I have to say, she is BEAUTIFUL!!! I`m told they only get to be around 7 or 8 feet. being that I already have a Burm, The size doesn`t matter to me. Maybe you might want to check into a pastel redtail. If you look in my gallery, her name is Matilda. she is also my avitar.
-
Re: Reasonable sized python?
Not sure if I was supposed to answer that in the redtail section. this site is very large. Please excuse any of my ignorance. I am trying to get used to and find my way around. I do get lost at times.
-
Re: Reasonable sized boa?
I am not positive, but I do believe carpets get pretty large. I as I`ve said have an around 11 or so foot Burm, but I can manage him myself. eventhough it is not recomended, I still do. I just don`t put him around my neck anymore.(he stil is a snake) no matter how docile he is.
I might be getting the granite confused with the carpet, but I do believe I remember seeing very large carpets.

Yeah im thinking that the blood will be fine, they can get max 10 feet right? and thats manageable alone if you aren't stupid (like you said, not putting it around your neck ect)
Besides by the time it gets to be 8 - 10 feet ill be over 20 years old lol!

Re: Reasonable sized python?
Are you talking about a Blood again?

yeah, now I am LOL, this tiem it isn't an accident though :D
EDIT: also, about the pastel redtail I dont know about it, I checked prices but its 200 dolalrs plus 68 for shipping which is way out of my budget unfortunatly (they also dont have them at the breeder near me :( )

Re: Reasonable sized python?
A blood or short tail over 8 feet would likely be a record holder..I would suggest a Borneo short tail or Sumatran black short tail..Both are rather passive and acclimate quite well..See my thread under Blood pythons titled
Love my Borneos..:salute:

Ooo so more like 5 - 7 feet is more accurate? brb i gotta check the website, but I don't think they have short tails or borneos where I am, gotta check though :)
Brb gonna pull up the website

Re: Reasonable sized python?
Again, a Blood or Short Tail may not make the best beginner type snake, they arent as forgiving as Ball Pythons husbandry wise and can do downhill rather quickly if you dont ensure a proper setup.
Size wise, they all vary and there's giants and runts of all 3 species, but expect around 4 to 6 feet.

Oh yeah I will have a perfect set up, I know temps and humidity needed. Im getting a thermostat and 3 thermometers (one with a probe, one with humidity guage and temp, and one just pure temp. All digital) also getting UTH ect ect
I had a corn snake for a few years that was 6 foot long, but had to give it away cuz we were moving. Also I have dealth with large snakes with my dads friend before so im fairly experienced
I can guarantee if I get a blood it will be happy and healthy :)

I really think im gonna get the blood. They are so amazing I can't get over it!

Re: Reasonable sized python?
WAIT for the BEST one to come by, not just the first one you see.
You definitely get what you pay for with these snakes.....
Would you rather have a yellow animal like the one I posted, or one like this?

It pays to shop first, and see the parents of the babies.

Will do!
I will ask to see the parents next time im in. I love the red but I also like the "yellow" ones. Like one I saw was yellowish, more like grey-bauge color it was SOOOO beautiful. I think I like the yellowish ones more BUT the red are pretty amazing looking! Argh its hard to choose! LOL
The one I saw was red though. I couldn;t really tell because it will 100% in its hide and I couldn't see it well, but Im sure I saw some red
Either way im gonna shop around and see what I come up with! Thanks for the advice :D I still cant believe how beautiful they are. I love them,

If you're in Newmarket, go to the Reptile Expo on Sunday, June 27th in Toronto. Everything under the sun will be there.

Re: Reasonable sized python?
Out of my carpets, my Bredli adult pair are my favorites. The female is around seven or eight feet, and the male is around five.

Re: Reasonable sized boa?
no Bloods do not get that large. I think the largest I`ve heard of a blood getting is like 6 and a half feet.

Re: Reasonable sized python?
oh my goodness!!! Is that a BLOOD!!!???? or a Borneo? B-e-a-utiful!!!! I`ve never seen one that size. I am definately not an expert, but I can give reasonably good advise on the animals I keep. That is one gorgeous snake. thank you for sharing!
-
Re: Reasonable sized python?
My advise to you is to try and handle each snake you are questioning. that way you might get a feel for which is meshing with you better.

I believe what Trevor is trying to say is that we feel you would be better off getting something else for your second snake. The jump from BP to Borneo short tail or blood is a big one. You say you will have the perfect set-up? So what you mean is you would not have it in a glass aquarium type cage or a home made wood cage with no tile or other heavy lining and seal to keep in heat and humidity right? We both keep ours in fairly sealed stacked cages designed for snakes. Not only can they be difficult to handle when they are full grown sausages but they really do not fair well in conditions that are less than perfect. One member on here ended up having to have hers treated for many months for an infection that just would not go away. We have seen many members post pictures if scale issues due to too high or too low of humidity.
Just be sure whatever you decide on that you have done ALOT of research and that you have everything you need for it before you bring it home. We are simply urging you to think it over very well before jumping into something. I would recommend a columbian red tail boa or one of more docil locality boas like a hogg island. A carpet maybe. I would not recommend any giants or the dwarf versions of them. Dwarf and super dwarf retics are very difficult to handle. They are not mean but they are very flighty and often musk when first taken out. Dwarf burmese are known to have a very wild and sometimes agressive temperament their entire lives. They usually cant be tamed like other snakes can. BCC boas (true red tails like Suriname and Guyana) get larger than than the columbians and often have a more tricky attitude.

I agree that it is a big jump. But I can say with 100% certainty that I will have the PERFECT setup :)
I have even read a guide on how to keep them in a glass viv (tricks to hold up the humidity) The main issue is the humidity, but I WILL have it right, I promise :D
I have done TONS of research on it, I have also called around a lot and gotten great advise from my fathers contacts (some of who are very well respected breeders) who he knew from school.
I also have connections to the local breeder in my area because me and him are very close friends. Ill be taking a great deal of advise from them and you guys aswell :)
I also already have my thermostat set for the temps needed. Ill be getting the enclosure tomorrow and will be testing the heat ect in it until tuesday when I pick the snake up.
The only issue that I may have is living in Canada. During the winter im going to have to get creative because I fear my UTH may not be enough...
also when It gets to be an adult I am buying a custom PERFECT enclosure from my buddy (gonna pay him to make it)
I was going to do this with my BP but instead I'd just be doing it with my blood python at different humidity, temps and larger enclosure
I give you my word, I have done my research and will properly house this snake. I have a general plan of how I will house it for its entire life and I have the space to do it :)
I also have VERY good "mentors" if thats what you wanna call them, to show me the best ways to take care of this snake or any other snake I get
Not to mention, I have the help of the BPnet community which I greatly appreciate!
I am very confident that if I get this snake, I will treat it with all the respec and give it the best husbandry possible :D

I will be cautious with how much I spend, even though its hard. I want every snake

Re: Reasonable sized python?
I set aside $50 a week from each paycheck for snakes/Vets if needed. Its and addiction thats hard to keep up with, not to mention i build computers as well lol.
But im being very serious on the money spending. You can get head over heals FAST.

Yeah, I heard vet bills are EXPENSIVE. like.. 300$. So ill have a lot saved up incase something goes wrong
Im getting 2 jobs soon. One at fast food place and 1 with my parents. So ill be making some decent bank :)
Im gonna actually set aside a large chunk of money for when I expand to have more than 10 snakes. Which WILL happen. Lol trust me :) I lvoe snakes!!!!
They are awesome, Im happy I chose to get a snake for my Bday. Such a good choice

Re: Reasonable sized python?
Glad to hear that your soo excited lol
But you reallllllllly should make sure this is what you really want. Money is a big factor in keeping herps, and without it you'll be setting yourself up for disappointment. I was like you, and purchased snakes fast. My first snake was a BP also, and once I got her 10 more followed 6 months later. I had to have a morph so I got my pastel, then I was at a pet store and saw an adult female, and had to have her. Then I adopted one off of craigslist. I stuck with them for a bit until I came across a sweet deal for some nice breeder normal females, and bought four of them. Then a red tail, kenyan, and so on lol. Truth is, I was in over my head before I could even fully realize it. Thank god nothing happened to my snakes but I know now if it did I would have been very upset, and probably without my snakes because of the cost of vet bills etc. I had a few that were showing signs of RI but turned out to be nothing, problems with equipment, all kinds of things, but you never know what will happen. Equipment is such a big thing too, you say 200+ dollars is WAY out of your price range? Well tstats are usually 100+ for a good one, cages are 200+ for a good one, and not to mention the snake. I am in no way shape or form trying to deter you from your dream here, but just trying to shed some light from young herper to young herper. You really do remind me a lot of myself. Your very enthusiastic, persistent, and knowledgeable, but I am sensing some impatience lol(maybe I'm not, thats just my personal problem). Do whatever makes you happy in the end, and just make sure you make that snake happy too. Don't let anyone including me stop you from making your decision, only you truly know whats best. Best of luck dude, and please post pics of whatever it is you decide on!!!

Thank you very much!
I am glad your snakes did well and that you amanged to over come the money situation. I also greatly appreciate the words of encouragement :D
One thing about the money situation, is that At first I knew I had at least 300 dolalrs to play with right now. Now I know its more like 400 - 500 dollars
Plus ill be working 2 jobs soon :) Gonna be making some good bank off that which I will be using almost 100% for my snake(s)
" Best of luck dude, and please post pics of whatever it is you decide on!!!"
Thank you! I will surely post pictures when I get my snake!
But most of all I just can't thank you enough for the kind words. I know a lot of people are concerned that I may be rushing into things, But id be very happy to prove them wrong (not saying anybody here has said that, but my brother and a few friends are already looking down on my for my choice of pet)
Im confident I can do it!
(LOL just wanted to add, you ARE RIGHT. I am EXTREMELY impatient lol. I am the most impatient person I know    )

Agreed, they are pretty docile and only grow to be 20 feet +. That isnt to hard to handle. Bah I dont even need A second person I could just put it around my neck and carry it out of the enclosure for cleaning
Also, I would plan to feed it the safest way possible, by putting the rat/rabbit ect on my head and then diving head first into the enclosure
Seriously though, lol I don't plan on getting anything 10 foot for a long time. If ever :)
