    Re: Reasonable sized python?

My advise to you is to try and handle each snake you are questioning. that way you might get a feel for which is meshing with you better.
Hold on to what is good
even if it is a handful of earth.
Hold on to what you believe
even if it is a tree which stands by itself.
Hold on to what you must do
even if it is a long way from here.
    Hold on to life
even when it is easier letting go.
    Hold on to my hand
even when I have gone far away from you.

    Re: Reasonable sized boa?

oh my goodness!!! Is that a BLOOD!!!???? or a Borneo? B-e-a-utiful!!!! I`ve never seen one that size. I am definately not an expert, but I can give reasonably good advise on the animals I keep. That is one gorgeous snake. thank you for sharing!

Thanks, it's a green tree python (GTP) that I bought from http://www.signalherp.com/. Check out their site. They have great looking animals, and information.

I believe what Trevor is trying to say is that we feel you would be better off getting something else for your second snake. The jump from BP to Borneo short tail or blood is a big one. You say you will have the perfect set-up? So what you mean is you would not have it in a glass aquarium type cage or a home made wood cage with no tile or other heavy lining and seal to keep in heat and humidity right? We both keep ours in fairly sealed stacked cages designed for snakes. Not only can they be difficult to handle when they are full grown sausages but they really do not fair well in conditions that are less than perfect. One member on here ended up having to have hers treated for many months for an infection that just would not go away. We have seen many members post pictures if scale issues due to too high or too low of humidity.

Just be sure whatever you decide on that you have done ALOT of research and that you have everything you need for it before you bring it home. We are simply urging you to think it over very well before jumping into something. I would recommend a columbian red tail boa or one of more docil locality boas like a hogg island. A carpet maybe. I would not recommend any giants or the dwarf versions of them. Dwarf and super dwarf retics are very difficult to handle. They are not mean but they are very flighty and often musk when first taken out. Dwarf burmese are known to have a very wild and sometimes agressive temperament their entire lives. They usually cant be tamed like other snakes can. BCC boas (true red tails like Suriname and Guyana) get larger than than the columbians and often have a more tricky attitude.

I agree that it is a big jump. But I can say with 100% certainty that I will have the PERFECT setup

I have even read a guide on how to keep them in a glass viv (tricks to hold up the humidity) The main issue is the humidity, but I WILL have it right, I promise

I have done TONS of research on it, I have also called around a lot and gotten great advise from my fathers contacts (some of who are very well respected breeders) who he knew from school.

I also have connections to the local breeder in my area because me and him are very close friends. Ill be taking a great deal of advise from them and you guys aswell

I also already have my thermostat set for the temps needed. Ill be getting the enclosure tomorrow and will be testing the heat ect in it until tuesday when I pick the snake up.

The only issue that I may have is living in Canada. During the winter im going to have to get creative because I fear my UTH may not be enough...

also when It gets to be an adult I am buying a custom PERFECT enclosure from my buddy (gonna pay him to make it)

I was going to do this with my BP but instead I'd just be doing it with my blood python at different humidity, temps and larger enclosure

I give you my word, I have done my research and will properly house this snake. I have a general plan of how I will house it for its entire life and I have the space to do it

I also have VERY good "mentors" if thats what you wanna call them, to show me the best ways to take care of this snake or any other snake I get

Not to mention, I have the help of the BPnet community which I greatly appreciate!

I am very confident that if I get this snake, I will treat it with all the respec and give it the best husbandry possible

    Re: Reasonable sized python?

Glad to hear that your soo excited lol

But you reallllllllly should make sure this is what you really want. Money is a big factor in keeping herps, and without it you'll be setting yourself up for disappointment. I was like you, and purchased snakes fast. My first snake was a BP also, and once I got her 10 more followed 6 months later. I had to have a morph so I got my pastel, then I was at a pet store and saw an adult female, and had to have her. Then I adopted one off of craigslist. I stuck with them for a bit until I came across a sweet deal for some nice breeder normal females, and bought four of them. Then a red tail, kenyan, and so on lol. Truth is, I was in over my head before I could even fully realize it. Thank god nothing happened to my snakes but I know now if it did I would have been very upset, and probably without my snakes because of the cost of vet bills etc. I had a few that were showing signs of RI but turned out to be nothing, problems with equipment, all kinds of things, but you never know what will happen. Equipment is such a big thing too, you say 200+ dollars is WAY out of your price range? Well tstats are usually 100+ for a good one, cages are 200+ for a good one, and not to mention the snake. I am in no way shape or form trying to deter you from your dream here, but just trying to shed some light from young herper to young herper. You really do remind me a lot of myself. Your very enthusiastic, persistent, and knowledgeable, but I am sensing some impatience lol(maybe I'm not, thats just my personal problem). Do whatever makes you happy in the end, and just make sure you make that snake happy too. Don't let anyone including me stop you from making your decision, only you truly know whats best. Best of luck dude, and please post pics of whatever it is you decide on!!!
