    Aspen bedding question.
Do you know of any aspen bedding that you can get in bulk that is as fine as the ZooMeds Snake Bedding? It just seem more uniform and overall better than the stuff I have. I have a bag of "SUN SEED" SUNTHING SPECIAL! Its ok, but I like the looks and feel of the ZooMeds better!

    thanks for any input,

    Dave

The problem with finely ground aspen is there is a chance the snake could ingest large amounts of it, or have them clog the mouth.

As to the original question, I'm not sure if there is any fine-ground ones. Probably somewhere, check online reptile stores to find one, then search local area for that product name.

I know it is sold. I believe in feed stores, maybe a Tractor Supply store too. They sell it in 20 pound bags. There is a vendor at our reptile show that sells it there. It comes in chips and shredded.

I don't know the name of the stuff, and I won't be back to the reptile show until June.

    Good Luck!

I've found that Walmart's brand of aspen is similar to Zoomed's stuff, actually.

Tractor Supply Company carries huge bags of shredded aspen, but not the fine shreds. It's really cheap too. I prefer the fine shreds myself.

Sani-chips didn't seem cost effective to me. They are not compressed like the shredded aspen.

I am currently using the ultra carefresh in my ball viv now. I was surprised how little it took to fill the cage. I bought the smallest bag available which was about 7$ and to fill the 10 gal viv I only had to use a ninth of that or so. Have not tried it with my boa yet. She just shed so I'll probably use the rest in her viv and make a final decision if I want to continue using it or not.

I was wondering the same thing. Can you use any type of aspen or is the "snake" aspen all you should really use?

I have used rabbit/gerbil bedding at petsmart. Only like 12 bucks and I use if for my rats and will be using it in the 41 qt tubs much easier than paper towels in those huge things. haha

Thats exactly what i buy for the shreaded. ill buy like 10 bags and the people look at me like im crazy. and its relatively cheap compared to the zoomed from petstores. but i buy the big bags of shaved aspen from tractor supply. i believe its 9 cubic yard of compacted aspen so it comes out to alot more. but i mix the two together. and i also use the shaved for the rats.

As long as the prey item is dry you shoudln't have any problems with the snake ingesting aspen. The odd time they do is also not an issue as long as it's not a huge amount.

Chipped aspen is great for spot cleaning as you can just use a shopvac and suck up dirty spots.

I use coco-husks and absolutley love it. It holds moisture better and resists mold alot better as well. The price is pretty cheap as well, around $20 a bale.

I used to use ZooMed snake aspen and I really like it, but my collection got bigger and I wanted to find a cheaper option. I now use the chipped aspen. I got a humongous bag of it for $10 or so at petsmart, where the 24 qt ZooMed stuff was $13.

I like the ZooMed shredded better because it looks better in a display, but the chipped stuff works just as well, and is a LOT cheaper.

I'll have to check Wal-Mart and TSC for their shredded aspen.

I looked all over walmarts pet area the other night but I couldnt find it :(

Maybe only certain walmarts choose to carry it.

Speaking of the snake aspen, does anyone have any REAL stories of snakes ingesting the snake aspen and them being harmed from it? I know a lot of people say the stringy-ness of it can cause problems if swallowed, but has anyone had it happen to their BP's?
