Day 36
Eggs have been in the incubator 36 days and there starting to develop a slight mold...is that something to be concerned about??
-
Re: Day 36
Mold is usually caused from too much moisture in the egg tub if your using the method of eggs in the substrate.
How is the tub set up.

Re: Day 36
Have them in vermiculite...i am seeing alot of condensation starting to develop recently....i mixed it at the 1-1 ratio....
-
Re: Day 36
if you have eggs in the substrate and using the press n seal this is why more condensation develops. Especially closer to hatching day they will casue more moisture due to eggs being and the end of the cycle. if your using the press n seal, try taking it out as at this stage.
I for one dont use press n seal and never had moisture develop on sides or the lid ever.
This is how i set up my eggs, no mixing of any kind since eggs are never touching the substrate.

Re: Day 36
Should the little bit of greenish mold be of any concern at this point though?? ANd also when you say no mixing, what do you use for substrate then under the grid??? And i am just using sterilite tubs...

Re: Day 36
If the mold isnt bad then leave it. If it gets worse then you can slowly try to wipe it away with a qtip if possible.
Mixing i mean not having to mix weight of vermiculite to water.
I just toss in 3" of vermiculite and then soak the substrate.

Re: Day 36
Thanks for the help, ill try your method with the grid on my next clutch this year...

Nice looking clutch :) But someones drawn on your eggs ;)
I would also say that its too damp which is causing the mold you could try wiping it off though.

Re: Day 36
I've heard of folks using a very small amount of athlete's foot powder, applied with a q-tip, to mold spots. Reportedly it kills the mold, and the hatchlings come out fine.

I bet I would of never found that on a text book. LoL!
Thanks I will remember that when the time comes :gj:

Re: Day 36
Yep! The athletes foot powder is a great trick. Just a bit on a Qtip over the mold spot. This will keep the mold from coming back in that spot. I have 2 infertile eggs attached to good eggs in a clutch. I have already used the powder on one of them. Most of the time mold will not affect good eggs but I do it anyway just in case. To prevent mold from spreading to the good eggs. Wether it affects good eggs or not, I dont want it there lol

I can actually vouch for using Athletes foot powder I used to use it with any leopard gecko eggs that started going moldy.

1-1 is too much. Vermiculite to water should be 8 parts verm to 1 part water. Thats the ratio I use, and it works just fine. :gj:
Hope it helps.

Re: Day 36
The 1:1 ratio is by WEIGHT, not by volume. I use 1:1 by weight, and it works perfectly.

agreed...
SAME WEIGHT vermiculite/water = approx 95% humidity
never had any problems with this method

Thanks for that Alan, I always used Athletes but always willing to try something new if I ever have to :)

Re: Day 36
I myself never go by ratios with vermiculite because you never know how dry or damp the vermiculite is when you go to use it. The general rule of thumb is add water so it clumps, feels damp, but no water drips out when you squeeze it in your fist. When you have done a few it is very easy to determine. I have seen vermiculite on pallets that has been exposed to rain and sun and whatever so I think going by feel is your best bet as you never know how wet or bone dry it already is? The test is always squeeze in fist and have no drips and have it clump. I always use vermiculite and have never had any problems;)
I have had mold on dead or unfertilized eggs which doesnt hurt the others but drives my allergies a bit crazy so cleaning it is nice.

I have never tried that - is there anything specific I should ask for?
In the past I have used gentian violet on leopard gecko eggs with great success. I think I have two bottles of the stuff left as it was being made illegal to buy when I was looking as it can cause cancer in people apparently.
But when I explained it was for lizard eggs the pharmacist said ok and sold me some. :)
