Best thermometer/hygro positions ?

Subject

Thermometer probe right on the glass where the UTH is.

Thermometer on the cool side an inch or two above substrate.

Hygrometer an inch or two above substrate in center of tank.

OH?I put mine in all the wrong spotsI guess. I put mine up top, on the back wall, 7 inches above the substrate, l where he sits all the time on his second level.

second level? Ball pythons are terrestrial snakes and should have a ground based enclosure.

There's pictures of him and where he's sitting right now. He won't stay downstairs. I put him in his den and he goes right up top to level two. Last night after he ate he stayed below where he probably caught Mickey to sleep it off.

This is going to sound stupid but though he was in with other baby balls, could he be a regular python. I've never seen him ball up at all at the shop or at home. And he likes high stuff.

if you have a glass tank i would suggest not putting the gauge on the side tank because the glass can be significantly colder then the hot spot or the ambient temperature. i would suggest keeping the gauge in the middle of the cool end on the substrate with the probe on the hot spot

i use the acurite 00891 model which measures an "in" temp and "out" temp along with humidity so essentially killin' three birds with one stone lol.

i place the unit itself on the cool side to get a measurement of the ambient or "cool side" temps and then run the probe to the "warm" side to get a read out from there and while its in the cool side it gives me a readout of the humidity as well like the pics i have posted below.

So this model takes the temp of the spot of the device and the probe?

yes it will take the temp of where the probe is and where the device itself is

yes sir it does, here's a few models that i use. and as another user stated in a previous thread that there is an upgraded version of the 00891 model which i just went out and purchased at my local home depot for $13, i had a time where i couldn't even find the older model so i drove a hour drive to the nearest walmart to pick up a few.

but to now find out they've upgraded it seems like a good thing, hopefully my local walmart will start carrying it...

here's a few pics of the acurites that i use and a pic of the upgraded 00891 model as well as the older model and another thermo-hygrometer i just picked up in case i ever needed it.

i like the fact that it doesnt have a probe being as though i had to go buy some replacement units due to my BP abusing it and ripping the probe out from the unit. but its best to use the probed unit to measure out all three areas of the enclosure (warm side, cool side, and humidity).

i would only suggest the probe-less unit if you used a temp gun then you could measure the basking area with a temp gun and use the probe-less units to measure humidity and ambient air plus they're like $3 dollars cheaper than the probed units. here's the pics, all but the older model were purchased at home depot. i found the older unit at a walmart in a nearby city since my local walmart always ran out.

Now with that upgraded model it looks like u can only see of the the temps/humidity's at a time and u haveto press a button to switch... now this would mean going into the cage would that not aggrivate the snake

no you don't need to press a button to see the other temp. Well, you press a button but just once, same as the previous model.

and by the looks i guess i would need 2 one for each side.... okies thankss

Why would you need two? It has the exact same functions as the previous unit. The only difference is the design.

the only thing different with the newer version and the older model are design and battery type. the newer model uses AA and the older model uses AAA batteries.

but they both perform the same in measuring both warm and cool side temps along with humidity. those plastic prints on the screen are on there to give you some insight as to what the model can do and how it's displayed.

but there's a button on both models that you press to either view the time or the temp. obviously since i'm using it to measure temps the clock function isn't of any use to me.

so all you need is one to monitor everything in your enclosure. whether it be the newer model or the older model.
