    What fraternity/sorority are/were you in?
I know I saw one of these threads a long time ago but thought it would be cool to see it again. I'm sure we have a decent number of members who participated in greek life.

I happen to be a Sigma Pi. What about you guys?

Has nothing to do with paying for friends. My college was free to join and we did community service to local communities weekly. Not to mention i also played baseball at the college as well. And i never lived in the house either as i rented my own apt while attending school.

Ha ... well played. I didn't join until my 3rd year though, so I joined the fraternity that my friends were already part of so that argument only half applies to me.

 It's all about buying friends here at the U of I. It's almost as bad at high school clicks. This one...girl, was going to invite me to tailgate with her 'friends' but she wasn't sure if her 'friends' would allow it. I'm pretty sure the only reason she invited me is because I can buy alcohol. Too bad I don't buy for minors :P

Ya that's kind of the case up here at Valparaiso too ... except that freshman cannot pledge first semester. It really cuts down on people buying friends and they end up choosing the fraternity based on the friends they already have. I think its a better system.

I'm in Sigma Alpha Iota, the girl's professional music fraternity. We're a frat, even though we only allow girls... Don't ask me why.

My kids go to schools that only have acedemic greek houses.
Loyola University in Maryland (formerly Loyola College) and Embry Riddle Aeronauctical University.

I never joined, didn't see a reason to join. Just my personal opinion.

fraternities and sororities are mainly for buying friends and under age drinking and drug use.

It is usually the people who are not in them and who have never experienced them that talk bad about them.
The same principal applies to those who keep snakes and those who don't. Those who don't usually keep snakes think the reptile keepers are crazy.

I had a lot of friend outside of the fraternity during college -- maybe even more than within the fraternity. I didn't feel I was "buying" friends, as it was more of a way to get guys with the same ideals and values in one place. As many others stated, I knew many of the guys before I even pledged.

Plus, we didn't look down upon non-fraternity members -- we always had "independents" hanging out with us and always welcomed them.

As far as underage drinking -- really? I'm pretty sure there is tons of that going on in the dorms and at house parties that are non-fraternity related. If anything, our house was safer than any other party. I don't know what other fraternity parties were like, but at ours we didn't allow underage drinking. We hired professional security services, they checked id's of all people coming to the parties, and issued wristbands to "of age" attendees. If someone was caught drinking without a wristband they were asked to leave.

And as far as drugs -- our house had zero tolerance for drugs.

Oh, and BTW -- Theta Chi - Phi Chapter!

I was always under the impression that fraternities/sororities were for networking and looking out for each other after college...
