Meet Charlotte!
After waiting nearly 3 months (for the weather to warm up at the breeder's home), my little hognose girl has finally arrived! :) She got here this morning, and I actually almost threw her away... seriously, the snake bag was so light I thought she'd escaped at first. Luckily I noticed the little worm shadow, and pulled her out before she ended up in the trash. LOL
I named her Charlotte from the book "Charlotte's Web," for two reasons - first is going along with my theme of children's lit characters for my non-BPs (who have Shakespearean names), and the other reason being that I can name her future mate Wilbur. Ya know, the pig from that book. :D Anyway, here she is!!

Settling into her 6qt tub... using a cut bottle for water now, since I forgot to buy a small bowl (will get it tomorrow).

Re: Meet Charlotte!
Btw, the thermometer probe (under the substrate) is reading around 90, but my temp gun reads as high as 100 if I put it directly over the heat tape... is that safe? She was burrowed when I checked on her just now, so I want to make sure it's not too hot.

Re: Meet Charlotte!
Very Very cute!! i love the little noses they have :P

Re: Meet Charlotte!
Whoa, her belly is crazy! I love that little patch of orange she has! I'm not familiar with Hognoses, but that's just so cool!
I love love love the names too. I just watched the movie for the first time since I was a kid and fell in love with the story... But it's so different from what I remembered, lol.

Re: Meet Charlotte!
if the UTH/Flexwatt is reading 100 but inside the tub bottom is low 90s your fine. Cant go by what the heat tape reads but what inside temp reads.
For my snakes stat is set at 93 and i get 96 on the tape and a 92 inside tubs.

It's actually reading around 100 IN the tub, if I put the temp gun directly over the hottest part of the flexwatt - but on the other side of the tub (where the probe is), it's only 90-95 right over the tape. Weird! :weirdface
I guess it's fine if only that one spot is hot, since hopefully she knows how to thermo-regulate herself. Right now her flexwatt is connected to one of the racks, so I can't turn it down much without freezing my corns.

Isn't that weird? I'm totally new to Hognoses, but also thought that was unusual... does anyone here know?? If it's not typical, maybe that makes her a paradox.

I'm a librarian, so it just seemed appropriate to go with literature themes. :D A few of them break the trend, but for the most part it's BPs with Shakespeare & others with children's lit names. My corns include Matilda, Coraline & Scout, and my jungle carpet is Kipling (after the author of Jungle Book). Btw, I haven't seen the new version of Charlotte's Web, but always loved the original movie & book.

I love their little snout noses... it's the main reason I fell in love with these snakes.

Re: Meet Charlotte!
One question... the breeder said she ate a week ago (2 f/t pinkies), so should I feed her soon or wait a full week? She's so little, I don't want to starve the baby!

Re: Meet Charlotte!
If your getting uneven heating allover the flexwatt its time to redo the connections or buy new piece.
It is normal to have 1-3 diff on the heat tape but not 10
How is it wired, clips or solder.

colubrids are pigs you can offer her a large pink now or wait up to you. Only species i recommend not offering food for a week is BPs

It came pre-wired w/ clips from reptile basics, and is a brand new 3" strip... I did cut it to fit the small tub, so could that have affected it? Or maybe the tub is just closer to the tape at that spot?

Re: Meet Charlotte!
P.S. I looked at pictures of other hoggies, and some of them do have an orange bit near the tail... but hers is definitely bigger than usual!

as long as you didnt cut through e black your fine. And the tub being closer at one spot is very possible but only you can answer that. Clips are fine and dandy but they do come loose or have not so good connection.
I always recommend soldering as when done good it lasts and you get even heating

Re: Meet Charlotte!
Thanks for the info! :gj: I just fed her a pinkie mouse, and she was happy to take it... but she wouldn't take it from the tongs, just when it fell to the ground. I may have to reconsider a feeding tub, since I don't want her ingesting the substrate (tonight I cleared a spot when she started moving it around). She did start looking for a second mouse the second she finished, so next week I'll definitely give her two mice. Here are a few shots from the feeding:
She tried to eat it sideways at first, LOL.

Awesome Hog you got...
That orange is pretty normal in size... It is the split vent scale... All westerns have it...
Here is the vent of one of my reds...

Re: Meet Charlotte!
Thanks for the info! I'm loving her so far, and it's hard to leave her alone (for the week of getting settled). She's always out when I'm in the room, pressing her cute little snout up against the tub. :)

Re: Meet Charlotte!
P.S. Can you recommend a good website for Hognose info - particularly anything about their morphs and genetics? I've done a bit of searching, but nothing really useful is coming up for me.

Re: Meet Charlotte!
So cool you got your first hognose Laura! My girls are 16g and 23g, they get 2 pinks every Wednesday and Saturday for now. I have a 2 year old male hognose that he eats Wednesdays and Saturdays too, until he gets caught up on his weight. My yearling male eats once a week, he's a bit stout. LOL They are ravenous like Gregg says. And yes, these snakes will often try stuffing their mouths with prey at the most rediculous angles! Be careful though, your hand might be misinterpreted as a mouse. :D
I wish I could see those pix, they may be just 1 month old, but photobucket already dropped them? Randy Wright will be at the San Mateo show this weekend, he usually sells his hoggies for $45 or so. There might be another vendor with hoggies too. :)
Here's my Tinkerbell, she's the bigger of the two hatchling girls. I took her picture yesterday after weighing and feeding her.

Re: Meet Charlotte!
Thanks for the info, CA! And it's actually my fault the images are gone, since I recently attempted to re-organize my photobucket albums... which just resulted in more confusion and broken links. I'll post them again later, along with some funny recent feeding pics. She's already shown me those weird eating habits, as she tried to eat a fuzzy mouse butt-first with the feet sticking out. The prey was admittedly a tad big for her, but she got it down after about 15 minutes of creative mouth-work. :D
