Neither Pine nor cedar should be used with your rats/herps/ really anything. These bedding smell nice because of the hydrocarbons and phenols they are giving off which is toxic to your pets. Id highly recommend switching to aspen ASAP.

I've raised literally thousands of rats on pine. I haven't ever had a problem with it. Just my two cents.

i bought the pine because of reccomendations from members here that produce mass quantity of rats with good reputations and no problems so i don't see why i would just change it without any evidence. Also i use paper substrate for my bp's.

I am going to guess, but I'm probably one of the largest rodent breeders on this form, and we use pine. Have since 2000 with no problems, except it getting into the nozzles sometimes, and causing floods.

I think the aspen absorbs the odors better, corn cob is the best for odors however. But cob is messy.

I pay $23 for an 8 cubic foot bale of aspen, so i think that is a pretty good deal. I always give the best to my pets, even if some disagree, pine smells a certain way for a reason and can cause problems in certain cases.

Don't know the # exactly, we do it according to amount of feed.

We feed 11-13 tons of mazuri and Harlen feed a month. Oh, and a ton is 40 - 50# bags. So in a week the guys feed aprox 113 50# bags. Thats in the winter, in the summer the feed will go up to aprox 15-20 tons a month.

Geez. That is a lot of rodents.

I'm pretty sure pine is becoming safer. It's not like she's going out into a field to get it. I do think it's important to teach the new members certain pine is ok, but to be careful what you use. So, it's probably less confusing for them to tell them not to use it at all. It's an advance bedding :)

I bought a bale of aspen for $11 at petco. But you can get the little compressed bags at walmart for only $3.50.

I would love to see your facility, sounds impressive.

A ton is a skid. So in the winter you wipe out half a tractor trailer load per month. (you can put 40-44 skids per trailer depending on type and how it is loaded)

How big is your building? What do you heat/cool it with? What type pf racks do you use?

My bails of aspen just went up from $12-15. Forget the cu. feet but its like 30 or 40 lbs. It lasts me a long time because I don't breed too many rodents. I also use it for my reptiles with no issues.

Yes a skid is a ton. We have it shipped direct from Richmond, ID. The trucks can only hall 22 tons at a time so I reorder everyother month, We get back up from Harlen. In the summer we bring in a truck almost everymonth. The summer bills suck, everyother month is nice.

I would not know why anyone would want to see the place. It smells, but it is impressive (sort of). If you picture the freedom breeder racks in rows and rows. That is it. The building is 40 foot by 100 foot. The food and bedding are stored in another building, nothing but rodents a bathroom and a large restrant sink to wash the tubs. The work is not so bad, I call it the dirty side of all the snakes I have.

So do you breed just for your snakes?, if so then more impressive should be to see your snake room!
I have a cabinet shop, so I have shavings all the time, we usually don't work with pine, so I use alder wood shavings, only for my rodents, snakes are kept in paper any one knows if that is ok?

I never went to their facility, since it was too far away, but I did regularly buy their rodents from one of those reptile specialty stores and they were good quality. :) I also bought the Harlen aspen from them every 3 months at the RMR expo. Their snakes looked really nice as well. :D

I wish I could still get bedding that way now...still haven't found a supplier of Harlen bedding up here in WA.
