Please stop posting negative info
At last nights meeting at Tinley show they spoke about going on the offense side of our hobby instead of the defense.Instead of posting threads showing negative info we find in the local papers concerning reptiles. We should be showing the truth about our reptiles. When someone posts info they find its just giving those that dislike our reptiles more fuel to use against us.Yes majority of the stuff in the papers is false but those that believe everything printed dont know that. They also spoke about going to your local newspapers and giving them the truth about reptiles in a profesional manner. They also talked about educating your neighbors and community about the truth concerning our reptiles. If you can find scientific info on reptiles so people can read the truth it will also help.So what i am trying to say here is please only show the TRUTH about reptiles not uneducated info incorrectly given to our media :gj:.

Re: Please stop posting negative info
Good ideas!!!
I think all the negative stuff people post just fuels the pressure on people to give up their fight.

Re: Please stop posting negative info
I think we need to know about all of the press we're getting. Positive or negative, we need to know what's being put out for the average Joe to read/hear/see. Turning away from bad press will do nothing more than allow the "enenmy" to spread lies and untruths. There have been people ask me about some of the lies written and even shown on TV. I was able to set the story straight and my friends now understand how these lies are being spread. Without reading some of these articles right here, I would have never known about them. But because of this forum, I'm able to be informed about what's being written and can debate these matters with useful infomration.
Just my opinion!

The truth is not as interesting in comparison to a make believe story.

Re: Please stop posting negative info
We need to know what things are being said. Staying in the dark and tihnking that the world is all rainbows and sunshine isn't going to help us keep our reptiles.

Re: Please stop posting negative info
Well the idea was to educate the media and newspapers BEFORE they write false info.If we give out the truth then they will not print false info ;)

Educating those in the media does not mean they will publish the truth. The media is notorious for publishing false information especially when there is an agenda being sold to the naive public.
I'm not buying the war.
I'm not buying Global Warming.
I'm not buying the Health Care reform.
I'm not buying banning any reptiles.
I'm not buying BS.

I don't think it is so much that are simply uneducated. I think the fact nowadays is that much of, if not most, of the mainstream media is not interested in publishing the truth, or actual facts. In most instances, these do no make for the most sensational headlines, since after all, that is what sells papers.
Which do you think would be more likely to be printed? A story about "Joe the reptile enthusiast responsibly keeping his burms in locked cages", or "killer pythons from the Everglades invading Washington DC"?

Look at the 911 truth movement, they make a joke out of anyone that questions 911 so all in all killer pythons are coming to every US neighborhood unless they ban responsible owners from having such deadly creatures.

We will only be listening to each other but the majority will buy the lies and not question a thing. :(

That's how our government works they take away a little in small increments but when you look back 10 - 20 years you'll see how much we let them take. They'll never stop as long as we keep giving away our rights.

If the 911 movement can't wake enough naive people up about 911 or the criminals running this country we certainly won't be able to do nothing about holding our rights to keep reptiles and it will continue to trickle till there is nothing more to give up.
Sad but true.

I see a whole host of problems with this idea.
Just think about it for a second. They suggest we stop posting negative news articles on our site. The logic being that if we don't post negative news stories, the papers will have nothing to write about. So us not posting their stories, gives them less to write about? Is that what they're saying?
Anyone else see a design flaw there?
Also, lets be honest, what newspaper is going to publish a story about "Average guy sends email to news outlet about why snakes are less dangerous than we make boatloads of money telling you they are." They won't. I mean go ahead, try, but they won't.
It is critically important to be aware of what the other side is saying. It's important to know so that we can all form opinions; we need to be as educated as possible, so that when someone finds out you have snakes and says "Man, I read this article saying that..." You can say "Ah, yeah, I've seen articles like that... They got some of their information twisted, here's why..."
I guess what I really don't understand is how they expect that not posting threads on reptile forums will stop, slow, or otherwise make any difference in, the media from printing incorrect information. You think Fox or NBC give a rats rear end about BP.net? You think they run over to Kingsnake.com for their information? Somehow, I doubt it.
If they did, their information might be better.
If you guys (you guys being American herpers, obviously this decision doesn't have any real, immediate implications for me personally) want to defeat this bill, ignoring news about herps, be it good or bad, is the absolute last thing you should do. Get informed, know your stuff. Watch what you say and how you say it. VOTE. Vote twice. Register your pets as voters and vote for them. But don't ignore what's happening around you. That's step 1 of a great plan for losing your right to own herps.
**Note: I do not suggest or condone the submissing of false voter registration in order to alter election results.

Here's a picture of my son receiving an award from the Civil Air Patrol. I downloaded it from the camera to my computer and when I looked at the picture on the computer, this is what I got.

Re: Please stop posting negative info
I think it's a better idea for people to promote the following: 'oh, that article on killer pythons? Everyone's saying that's a crock, they're not really dangerous'.
Never let it stand when someone prints something like that. Make it widely known that it's a joke, provide the correct information, and sound intelligent doing so. If there's one copy of the article without comments, and 50 copies of it with comments calling it a crock, which one are people most likely to read? (One of the 50 copies, of course).
We need to change what everyone knows by loudly denying the bad information that's being put out there. We can't do that if we ignore it and never post links to it. Right now, 'everyone knows' snakes are dangerous. The only way to fix that is to overwhelm the noise out there with our own noise.

Do you think you could stay on topic for even ONE thread without going conspiracy nut? Please?
Anyway, people don't need banners proclaiming reptiles the bestest best pets evar like totally ohmigod. All it takes is meeting one person who owns a reptile. I can't tell you how many people I've met who walked away from the meeting considering getting a snake for themselves, after I answered their concerns calmly and with a smile ("Nah, he won't get big enough to eat rabbits by a long shot, and the rats he eats were bred for food and are already dead and frozen by the time I buy them. It's like furry TV dinners.")
People always have the same questions:
Won't he get really huge?
Does he bite?
Is he poisonous?
Do you have to feed him live mice?
I know people get tired of answering the same questions over and over, but every time you do you're educating someone new who will be happy to have their worries put to rest. Heck, even anecdotes help, and we all have funny stories about the time Iggy the Iguana climbed the curtains, or Monty the Python pooped on your mother in law.

You just proved the validity of his comparison. Have you looked at any of the facts surrounding 9/11, or did you just believe what the news media told you? What is it that we're talking about trying to get people not to do in this thread?
Granted, his example was off topic, but it was a valid comparison. There are lots of facts about both snakes and what happened on 9/11 that the general public is happy to ignore because the news media tells them a story. The point, in both cases, is that people need to verify that what they're being told makes sense rather than just believing it without question.

Re: Please stop posting negative info
The best way to do that is to talk to people who were there, because they generally know what is going on better than the people who weren't. (Ex. 'that building fell down and it wasn't even on fire!' 'Oh, that's because the entire other side of it was damaged, they just didn't show it on tv--I know, I saw it'). See?
If you want to know about pythons, ask herpetologists who study them, and ask python owners. Ask people IN the Everglades what they see. Don't ask a politician, a media person, or anyone else with an agenda. Don't ask a conspiracy nut who has never been to Florida, or Burma, or never touched a python.

Re: Please stop posting negative info
Bump.. For obvious reasons..
As much as the ignorance and lack of fact angers me, Im no longer going to join in on the mockery of these bills and the people supporting them. I have to agree that it shows a lack on our part and will just anger them into pushing the bills forward.

Re: Please stop posting negative info
Public ridicule is the best thing for them, actually. They hate being mocked. Yes, it will make them angry, and they may push harder, but it's actually more likely that they will back off, because their public reputation is the most important thing TO them. Politicians are wimpy that way. If they're going to look foolish, they're not gonna keep doing it. Sooner or later, they will back down if enough people put them down for it.
