    WOW petsmart............
I went to petsmart today to look for a bulb, While looking around i found that NONE of there snakes have hides. After seeing this i started looking around a little closer and found that they had a red tail boa about 4 1/2 - 5 feet long in the same small tank as a 3 1/2 foot ball python. They also have nothing showing temps or hum. in the tanks. After talking to the kid working with the reptiles it was really clear they had no idea about them at all. How do they get away with stuff like this?

That sounds like the opposite of the Petsmarts around here as well. The store up the street from me uses thermometers (not the idea kind but its better than nothing), hides and always keeps the species separated.

there is a pet supplies plus around my house that does the same thing. They had about a 3ft red tail a 3ft ball and 3 baby red tails all in the same cage, no hides. just a log big enough for the babies to climb up and a water dish with a heat lamp. I did buy my ball python from a pet supplies plus but needless to say, it wasnt this one and they seperated their snakes and had much healthier ones.

They don't provide the amount of security a snake needs. Its open on two ends and the snake doesn't feel secure in a hide like that. They may use it, but it is not ideal. I only use them for cage decoration, not as one of the hides.

Yeah I was waiting for the "wheres the proof" question.. It was proven on here not long ago that petsmart knowingly contributes to them and petco (unknowingly) contributes by way of some education program ran by HSUS.

I believe it was one of the mods that was able to find a link of info on this and posted it. Hopefully whoever did will see this and post it again.

That's how the shops are out here too. No hides at all, a very small water dish and some sand. One pet shop in the mall today brought in some corn snakes and they use this giant pyramid that is fully open as a hide.

My petsmart doesn't sell anything bigger than a corn. And, they are a horrible store. Not as bad as Petland across the shopping center.

I drive the 30 miles out of my way, to Zookeeper in Austin. Well worth it to avoid dealing with people that don't know anything about the animals they sell.

The closest Petsmart to me has a really nice reptile setup. The balls and boas are never more than ~100 grams so they probably sell them quite often. They use a half log in the ball tank but the back opening is flush with the back wall of the enclosure. I think being is such a densely populated area they can actually get knowledgable associates here.

I go in there a lot but hardly ever buy anything. The only item I purchase with any regularity there is my dogs food. Knowing about the HSUS support I might not even get dog food there...

do a google search for local pet shops in your area. Chances are you can find one that carries canidae--IMO it's best bang for your buck food out there and better than anything the box shops carry(we feed orijin to our dogs, but they're BIG time spoiled). :gj:

I saw something at a Petsmart that made me never want to walk into one again.

According to the manager I later talked to, what led up to this was a "new" employee fed 2 milksnakes, then put them back in the same cage. You do the math.

The thing that really pissed me off is she kept apologizing for the incident, like someone dropped something on the floor and broke it. She also said the employee thought they were supposed to be caged together cause the supplier shipped them together (I found that hard to believe).

The problem I have is I like Petsmart's frozen mice better than Petco's. But I still shop at Petco.

I order my pet supplies offline. I get my mice from Sean @ EBN, if he wasn't there though then I would order them online, I refuse to give the other local petstore any money because of their lack of knowledge and poor conditions.

Honestly, some Petsmarts care more than others, and it also depends on the employees. I just bought a BP from Petsmart and all their snakes had hides and gauges in the tanks. All commercial petshops though obviously aren't going to show as much expertise as someone who specializes in herps. Sad, but true because it's just a job.

We don't like that they contribute to the Humane Society of the US, which is NOT affliated with your local humane society. HSUS is leading the charge right now in supporting the passage of S373 to ban the interstate trade of several species of pythons and boa constrictors. That means, if you own any of them, and you move out of state, you can't take them with you without committing a federal crime. You can keep them in the state you presently live in, but you can never transport them across state lines. If this bill passes, and HSUS is throwing a lot of money to ensure that it does pass.

Go to the Laws and Legislation forum to learn more.

Your local humane societys are good, but petsmart donates to a group called the humane society of the united states, or HSUS for short. HSUS vary rarely supports local shelters and all of there donation money goes to there lobbying to make it harder to own pets. THEY ARE TRYING TO PASS A BILL TO BAN SNAKE OWNERSHIP! WHERE HAVE YA BEEN? lol. They think any "none domestic" animal should be illegal to own, this includes all reptiles, gerbals and the like, most fish, birds, exct. They also are trying to make it where owning a cat or dog is near impossible. They use money and lies to push there agenda and blatently ignore facts. there motto is money is truth and science is lies.

Yep is it, we only keep one snake per tank if we can, only when they are baby cornsnakes, then we keep 2 to a tank. All reptile tanks are completely cleaned every thursday per the PetSmart P&P's and most employees use common sense and put a hide in the enclosure. Every snake tank and reptile tank we have has 1 or 2 hides, plants, a water bowl and either aspen, repti bark, or calcium sand depending on the animals needs.

Fortunately for people who live near my PetsMart, we actually have a pretty knowledgeable staff in Pet Care. The employees that even i don't trust usually open in the mornings ;) . Also i am the snake guy at my store and anyone with ball pythons questions comes to me first, then again i just learned it all from here anyway, so at least its correct information. Plus i've made enough mistakes to know what works and what doesn't.

Oh yeah and i have NEVER EVER sold ANYONE dial thermometers and hygrometers. I always tell them to buy digital and go to walmart or home depot to buy them.

If you're referring to my post, I would have been skeptical if someone relayed the incident to me, had I not seen it with my own eyes. Petsmart in question - Westheimer@Eldridge in Houston. I could not believe someone would be so incompetent as to put two milk snakes in feeding mode together in the same cage.

What's even stupider is after I lodged the complaint on their website, they forwarded it to a Petsmart near Dallas. Very confused conversation when that manager called me ensued.

All of the ones around here sell WC or CH balls. No hides. All the turtles have no room to swim in the water.
