What to start off with??
I want to get into breeding ball python's but I dont know what to buy first. I have been doing alot of reading, looking at pics and playing around with the genetics website.
I want to breed for bumble bee's and go from there. I dont know if I should start off with a female pastel then get a male spider a year later or just skip the spider and get a male bumble bee. Getting the spider will be cheaper and i will feel the accomplishment of making bees but then what to do with that male spider breeding wise.
I dont know what all I can do once I have a male bumble bee. Thinking of breeding male pastel to the female pastel for supers then doing super pastel to bumble bee.
What do you guys think?

Re: What to start off with??
I'm trying to get started without dropping alot of cash down on the snakes. If money was no problem then i'd get a male and female bumble bee but i can't drop that much at first ya know

Re: What to start off with??
This is just what I think...
If you really want a bumble bee to enjoy now, then hunt for a deal on a hatchling male. And you'll most likely be able to find a sub-adult or adult female pastel later on. If you really just want to breed the python, and you think it'd be exciting to create a bumble bee, then pick up a spider girl and hunt for your pastel male. I think having the pastel as the male makes options better and broader. :)
I personally am a big fan of spiders, but not too much into the bumble bee... a little too loud / busy coloring.

Re: What to start off with??
Totally agree with the above post. Want the morph now or want to experience producing it? :gj:

Re: What to start off with??
I started out wilh 1.1 pastel, and 0.2 spiders..... grew from there super pastel and bees were my hope starting up... im hoping to produce a super black pastel next season

Re: What to start off with??
I think getting a bumblebee right off the bat would save time and possible headaches if you don't hit the odds right. (which isn't hard, but it's possible.)
I think you'd spend as much money either way. Lets say you buy the two snakes. You have to feed the female for 2 years, feed the male for 1 year. Buying them shouldn't cost much, no more than $350 I'd assume. Actually you'd probly spend less buying the two snakes, but you'd distance yourself from breeding bumblebees.
Meh, I'll stick to saying it's personal preference.

Re: What to start off with??
i'd love the excitement of seeing the bee born from the pastel x spider. It's just what to get the pastel 1.0 or 0.1 and the same with the spider. I dont know what i'd do after having the bumblebee. Breed it to a pastel????

Re: What to start off with??
start with a pastel x spider. Its always fun to breed the snakes and see what you produce. You also will gain the proper knowledge and get a hang of breeding in no time.

Re: What to start off with??
i know i will be super happy to see a bumble bee come out that egg. Thats why I want to do the pastel x spider. I just dont know what sex I should get the pastel and spider as. I need to sit back take a breather and think about what I want to do with this breeding idea.
I dont know what I want to do after I get the bumble bee. I have alot of options with the bee in breeding terms. Maybe do super pastel's then a super pastel x bumble bee.

get a female pastel and male spider.
if you get a male bee from that the next year you can breed the bee back to the pastel and get killerbees

Re: What to start off with??
with my luck i will get a female bumble bee lol...

Re: What to start off with??
well, if that's the case, I'd be happy to take her off your hands. :rolleye2:

Re: What to start off with??
id say get a male bumbe bee.. and a female pastel.. that way your 1st breeding porject.. you have the chance for the killer bee, super pastel, bumble bees, spiders, pastels and normals.. but then again i say that cuzz thats what i plan to do :D lol.. but i also agree with what everybody else says.. its up to you... :gj:

Re: What to start off with??
good thinking man. I'm gonna get a female pastel when it warms up. I can put her in a single tub and slowly build my rack while she grows.
Whats next after pastel x bumble bee??
Breed bumble bee x super pastel
The out come of the bumblebee x pastel sounds really good...

Re: What to start off with??
Super pastels are the ultimate breeder tool.

well at that point you could go so many ways.. if it was me.. and if you get the killer bee.. which is a super pastel spider i would buy a lesser.. becuase then you could produce queen bees which is lesser pastel spider... and then you could be on your way to the killer queen .. wich is the super pastel lesser spider...
and those things are crazy!! when they hatch thier kinda purple ish.. lol... but that would take a while to get to that point .. but thats what im planning on doing.. thats one of the morphs i want.. really bad!!!! but they are way too much money to buy.. so im going to try to hatch one out in a few years.. .and thats if everything goes to plan.. which doesn't happen very often.. lol but ill get there

agree, this way you always have a female pastel waiting for whatever you decide to throw in there in the future (you can never have too many female pastels) just make sure you get quality animals and not just the cheepest you can find.

Re: What to start off with??
female pastel's are cheap. Can you guys suggest some breeders please? There are so many out there that I haven't even scratched the surface yet.
I dont want to have alot of adults at one time, so I am trying to figure out what I need to buy. The female pastel and a male bee I will buy then go from there. I didnt realize how many options I had by starting with a pastel and a bee.

In september I bought a female pastel from kellysballs from a july clutch and I have always intended to get a male spider from her as well for future bumble bees but until reading your reply I had never even THOUGHT of killer bees later on. I'm even more excited now, haha!

Re: What to start off with??
Now I'm thinking of doing this lol in this order
pastel x pastel
super pastel x spider
With super pastel x spider wouldn't I have a chance for killer bee and bumble bee??
If I am missing something please point it out. Also with super pastel x pastel what would the odds be of getting more super's?? I need to use a different genetic website lol, I have a little trouble with this.
I love the look of super pastel's. I am trying to do it without spending alot on each snake. I know this will take years to accomplish and thats fine. I'm not doing it for the cash, I have some good friends who are less fortunate then me. They love the snakes but dont have the cash or time to focus on the breeding.
I will give some away, trade some for other morphs and sell some for cheap. It's not about the $$$ at all as I know I am gonna lose alot but I will gain alot of knowledge and have a blast doing it.

Re: What to start off with??
Hi,
You're a little off on the killerbee idea - that would only be possible if both parents were pastels.
I think these are the results (don't quote me its 3 am and I am an idiot about this at the best of times ).
pastel x pastel
25% normals
25% super pastels
50% pastels
super pastel x spider
50% pastels
50% bumblebees
The minumum pairing needed to get a killer bee is Bumblebee x pastel.
Super pastel x pastel
50% superpastel
50% pastel

It is totally fun to plan and scheme isn't it?!!?! I love doing that, and am guilty of doing it a lot. Though remember reality... it'll be 2-3 years before a hatchling will be mature enough to reproduce. And if you take that offspring and plan to breed them, it'll be another 2-3 years before those are mature enough to breed. So doing some math... it'll be 4-6 years before you'll be able to get the offspring from a second generation. So just plan stage one carefully and let the rest all fall into place. Who knows, 4-6 years from now your passions could take you in different directions. ;)
just mah $0.02 ;)

Re: What to start off with??
It is alot of fun planning it all out but it's a headache at the same time. I need to get 2 girls at the same time and get a male the following year. This way I can breed the male to both girls and kinda speed up the process.

well here's my 2 cents, first of all it's gonna be expensive, ive only bought 3 balls and im at $2k super pastel male $550.00 bumblebee male $525.00
and a 07 breeder spider parodox female $1100.00 , im also trying to produce my own bumblebee, either it coming from my spiderXsuper pastel paring or my male bumblebeeXnormal females (3) it gets expensive especially if you want nice animals...but it's doable, if i were you i would invest in an 07 or early 08 female morph either spider or pastel or super pastel, after that a male will come by easily, i had a very hard time coming across almost breedable size female, even today i can't find a 1400+gram size female pastel.... and im willing to drop some money for one, but hey you never know, good luck with your breeding projects and just so you know, take your time....

Re: What to start off with??
i know it's gonna be years before I get where I want to be. I cannot afford to drop $500 down per snake. I will take my time and be cheap with it lol..
I am not gonna be making a living off this, it's just a hobby for me. I will sell the offspring that I dont want to keep for cheap so someone gets a great deal and I clear up space in the mean time..
I plan on doing this for a long time, I figure 2014 before I get where I want with super pastel pair and bumble bee pair. I will be fine with those pairs as I have alot of options with those morphs. Simple as adding a new male to the collection and making another sweet morph. I can just breed those 2 pairs and be a happy camper.
I wish I could go out and buy a pair of super pastel's and a pair of bumble bee's. That would cost over $3k tho and it's way outta my range.
