Would you eat a rodent?
Ok i know you are probably thinking i have gone over the edge for sure now :rolleye2:.Well i made a comment on a thread and a member who will be nameless for now  pmed me.Well she was wondering what her fedex guy wondered when he delivered her frozen rodents. So i wondered what the response would be here.So if something happened and you were cut off from any other foods would you fry up a rodent or 2? Heck it cant be any worse then the crap we really buy in the stores anyway .I hope i dont gross anyone out :P.

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
Oh man. Well, I have two kids. So, as many parents here will know...you try your baby's food 90% of the time before you feed them, right?
Well this concept seemed like an interesting Idea before snake feeding time. So yes, I would. I have eaten and pinky, and crickets, and roaches. I would definately eat them if I had no other source of food, or even if the food I had was something like...celery, maybe? Something along those lines.

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
Exactly how I said it. I was feeding my stock, shortly after feeding my youngest daughter. Just so happens I had an extra pinky that day, and I decided to see if I could freak my fiance out. Needless to say, it worked. And, it was a pinky mouse. The roaches/cricket, I just used one out of the feeders. Cricket wasn't too bad. Roach, a little too juicy. I won't even go into the pinky.

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
Ever seen Never Cry Wolf? Amazing movie based on a true story. This guy survived off mice for months in the arctic wilderness. If I had nothing else, I would not hesitate to cook up some rodents.;)

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
Rodents are fine. I just don't see how people can eat snake.
I saw a guy peel an Atrox and eat it raw when I was doing landscaping. I heard them yell snake but by the time I got there, his foot was on the head and the skin was coming off. I think a co-worker of mine actually has a picture of him eating it. It was a beautiful 3 foot or so western. As far as I know, it just wanted to get away. No rattling or defensive posture.

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
You need an option on the poll for "I've already eaten rodent, even though I had other food."
Just sayin, cause I'd have picked that one.

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
In the past I have eaten all kinds of weird foods. My grandpa was full blooded cherokee and lived 100% off of the land. I used to spend summers with him. He had no electricty, no running water. He grew and hunted his own food. I have eaten grubs, roaches, crickets, grasshoppers, rat, squirrel, raccoon, bear, lizard, snake, all kinds of birds, fish, and tons more.
I'll eat anything if push comes to shove, better to eat that some weird stuff than die. The best thing I've ever learned is how to survive in a situation where most others wouldn't. I hope to never have to use those skills, but if I ever am, I'm confident that everything will be fine.

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
Oh my :puke: I think I'd rather give myself liposuction, eat that, and die from the infection
-
Re: Would you eat a rodent?
I would. I wouldn't be happy about it, but if it was means of life or death, I'd rather live. I can't imagine it tasting horribly... Anything tastes good with salt! Lol.

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
LMAO!!! Ok I must confess.. I am the "unnamed" one here :P
What I said was.. As I was looking at the 2 boxes which say in big BOLD letters -RUSH! -Frozen Meat- Rodent Pro - (with a nice big picture of a mouse on the box) I wondered what my UPS guy must think when he delivers these??
Either, what in the world are they feeding in there to need 2 big boxes of frozen rodents..Or.. I wonder if they eat this stuff their selves??? :8:
So what if we did experience some global catastrophe and had no food supply? Most of us have an awful lot of "meat" in our homes. Snakes, rodents, dogs, cats. If it were life or death for you and your family, would you eat these things?
Well I have had aligator. My favorite meat actually. Great cajun restaurant about 45 minutes from me serves the best ever. I have heard rattlesnake tastes about the same as aligator. Rodents?? Aren't they supposed to be close to rabbit?
Dont people in africa eat rodents? There are people who think americans are nuts for eating cows and keeping dogs and cats as pets.
Im pretty sure if it came down to eating my rats otherwise my son and I will starve, I would get a fire going in my fireplace, skin that critter and put a skewer in it!
Thats not to say I wouldnt load up a firearm to go out and try to catch my own food first though..
Im sure it would taste alot better than a raw pinky mouse...

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
if i had to and my life depended on it, yes. other than that, no.

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
When the world evolves into Demolition Man, I'm sure I will because I certainly won't be a surface dweller.
I can't even eat chicken on the bone, so I'd have to be pretty darn hungry to think about it. We can go four to six weeks without food depending on our body fat storage. In that much time I think I could grow some plants to eat.

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
I would definitely cook up some of the f/t small rats that I have in my freezer if no other source of food was available to me. I would put a ton of spices and ketchup on them, lol.

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
Oh, sure--why not? They eat rats in India. People eat squirrels here in the US--squirrels are, in fact, rodents.
They eat guinea pigs in South America. I imagine that capybara are pretty tasty, too. :) Heifer, International used to have guinea pigs on their available animal gifts list, though I don't see them there at the moment. A trio of cavvies can produce a lot of offspring, and guinea pigs are good eating.
I wouldn't eat an FT rat. It's been killed and frozen with all of its innards intact, and that doesn't seem safe. I would slaughter and properly clean a live rat, instead. I'll bet that with some rosemary and a bit of a wine sauce, it would be absolutely delicious. Or, you could cook up a bunch of them, debone them, and make a hearty stew with potatoes and veggies. I don't know what rat tastes like, but I don't imagine that it tastes bad--most meats from mammals taste just fine. Diet will probably make a difference in the flavor. I imagine rats eating lab block will taste a lot better than those eating dog food, and rats that are largely grain fed would have a good flavor as well.

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
Yes I'd eat a rodent if I was starving... Actually, I heard that gray squirrel is a delicacy!! That can't be too much different, no?
The meat in this country is mostly cow...pig...turkey...chicken. Yes there's a few others, but few and far between... why do you think that is? Even within the ruminants, what about goat or bison meat? (Actually, I've had bison burgers before and they are quite good.)

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
Already done it.
Squirrel stew is delicious!

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
Truthfully, I would. I wouldn't hesitate either, although I'd want a fresh one, not F/T.
After all, people in other countries eat all kinds of things, not just rats but spiders and such. I would have to be on the verge of starvation to eat anything that lived on land and had more than four legs, but who knows?
Reminds me of an old Food Network commercial: Guy and his wife are on vacation in some remote jungle, native chief offers them something he calls Magpani worms. Hubby finally takes a bite and whispers to his wife, " Call me crazy but this tastes like chicken."
Then hubby and wife are in suburban backyard barbecuing for the natives who are apparently vacationing with them. Hubby offer the chief a piece of grilled chicken. Chief takes a bite and whispers to the native next to him, " Call me crazy but this tastes like magpani worms."
All a matter of perspective I guess.

Yes. I don't know why people think about it so much.

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
I cooked rat over a spit and fed it to some other guys and had one myself. When I told them "No, it's not exactly squirrel" they questioned me closer until I admitted it was rat. Then they threw up. I finished the other rat off, since they were no longer hungry.
Rat, squirrel, chicken.. whatever. It was all living at one point, and then it's dead, and it's edible.
Trying to remember everything I've ever tried... I really can't think of much that I haven't tried, except for primates(obviously), cetaceans(although my grandfather and mother both ate manatee at one time) and I won't eat poisonous creatures like fugu(the blowfish) because risking death or maiming just for the thrill of eating a meal seems stupid.
I regularly eat things off the floor, and twice now have tried to eat a bead I found on the floor of the shop, much to my boss's disgust and disbelief each time(two DIFFERENT bosses, at seperate times, both honest mistakes.. I thought the shiny spheres were candy!). What's an immune system for anyhow?
Oh.. and although cheesey crickets out of the box aren't bad at all, the sour cream and onion crickets are dry and taste spoiled to me. Both are very dry on the tongue though, fresh crickets are better, so don't bother buying the packaged kind. Make your own.

I've always wanted to try many rodent species.
And to you "starvers", don't be such prudes.

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
I ate fried rat in Thailand. I've eaten many animals that were on the menu around the world. It's actually suprising how many things are taboo to eat in America that have been eaten around the world for thousands of years...

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
I hear squirrel is good in a crock pot... although what isnt :D

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
Yes, if i could catch a live one and cook it. I think I would have to be really way down there to eat a frozen one. But you dont have to taste it really, just swallow it really fast without chewing. Like one time we were weeding the garden and we where finding all these disgusting grubs. My dad dared me to eat one and i of course said no but then he said hed give me 50 bucks so he really wasnt thinking that i would do it at all. But i said okay and swallowed it in one gulp. It was an easy 50 bucks!:rofl:

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
i guess some people might find it gross but squirrel is great grill 4 a couple of minutes then finish in pan of beer and ur favorite bbq sauce in the oven 4 fall off the bone goodness also the brains r great in scrambled eggs rabbit isn't bad either generally just fry them up like chicken but cant imagine rat or mouse tasting 2 much different

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
The worst thing I've ever tried is a Balut egg in the Phillipines. And I flat out refused to try the fried cockroaches...
-
Re: Would you eat a rodent?
Mice are a bit small to feed a family of four. I'd instead go out into the backyard, get one of the smaller goats that we plan to send to the meat market..And have some goat for dinner.

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
I voted yes, because if I were starving, I would do what it took to survive. Now as far as actually not throwing it back up? That I have no clue.

Why?
What is so different about a rat then any other creature?
-
Re: Would you eat a rodent?
It's been over 10 years since I ate rat, but I remember it tasting a bit like rabbit and squirrel. They tasted alright, a little gamey, but personally I like that gamey taste, even if other people don't.
I recently got a hold of some iguana from the philippeans. My friend just came back from a trip to her mother's homeland. I haven't eaten it yet but I'm excited to. I Know that might bother some people, me eating a reptile. I personally feel nearly all animals can be used as food. As long as you use all parts of the animal and nothing is wasted I personally don't see anything wrong in it.
There are very few animals I wouldn't eat although there are a few, most due to their intelligence level. I wouldn't eat dolphin, nor would I eat elephant. I'd eat dog or cat, although I never have. I couldn't, even in extreme citations eat my own pets, but push come to shove I'd eat cat or dog if there was a strong enough need.
-
Re: Would you eat a rodent?
Nothing wrong with eating an iguana--just make sure you cook it well done. Reptiles are loaded with parasites.

Nothing about a rat, but any insect or rodent. Or reptile for that matter. Wait, besides gator.
-
Re: Would you eat a rodent?
So, no squirrel for you, either, eh? :)
I don't see what's so different about rodents. Imagine a big capybara steak. People eat nutria, too.
As for insects, that's a silly cultural taboo, they eat them in most other countries. They're good for you, too.
Gators aren't different from any other reptile--in fact, they're carnivores, they eat fish and birds, and raccoons, and whatever else they can catch. Iguanas are herbivores--I'll bet they taste great.

Why besides gator? Do you know I actually had someone say to me once that they would never eat gator because aligators eat people and it would be like cannibilism... :8:
So i had to explain to this person how 95% of the aligator offered as food at speciality restaurants are farm raised. Besides, in america how many people are actually eaten by gator? If someone gets attacked by one they hunt it down and either kill it or relocate it. They dont sell it to a restaurant.
I dont think rodent would taste bad but then again I season the heck out of any meat I cook. It would definately need garlic and if its gamey like duck, rabbit or lamb, then some rosemary is in order. Hopefully I would be able to find an onion and possibly a potato or two. Then take my restaurant sized container of au ju mix and add a little to some water.. You would never know what you eating other than it was meat.

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
Diners, Drive-ins and Dive show I watched last night (repeat), Guy ate some gator burgers. Said they tasted like........ gator.

Re: Would you eat a rodent?
Well, if the world gets to a point where youd have to eat your rodents, I do not think id have food by then to keep the Rodents alive LOL Im not sure how much extra rat food people keep around, or if its enough to outlast whats in the kitchen.
Id eat a rat, whats the different between rat meat and Rabit meat? like someone else said they try their pets live food just for the experiance. Id have to say the best bug ive eaten was a silkworm. No wonder beardies go nuts over them.
