Help with my new editions
i just recently bought 2 beautiful pastels off someone who live not too far from me. I bought a baby girl and a 1110g boy. Now call me crazy but the boy seems to drool every one and a while. They are in quarantine. Any one know anything?

Re: Help with my new editions
i really hope its not RI, the drool is clear, watery like. If it is RI is it contagious?
-
Re: Help with my new editions
snakes drool if their dehydrated and drink alot of water at once, i see it more with big snakes tho.
I don't know much about RI, if i suspect it i take away the water and increase the heat a little and it seems to clear things up. hopefully someone else will chim in, but i can answer one question, yes RI is contagious

Re: Help with my new editions
why would you take away the water? If there is RI shouldn't it be more humid? Also i dont think he has been drinking, but it can be.

bump any help? Really worried

Re: Help with my new editions
Yes, if it's a RI, you need to bump the humidity to help him break up the mucus. And he needs to be seen by a vet so that you can start him on rounds of injectible antibiotics. If it's advanced to drooling, then it's not going to go away without treatment.
No one can diagnose your snake just based on a description, and none of us are vets. But if it was MY snake, I'd be making a vet appointment.

I don't believe that it is airborne, but if you go and change his water, and you "thumb" the water dish (meaning, your thumb gets wet while gripping the edge of the water dish) and then "thumb" hers, you can transmit it through the water.
Completely disinfect between handling animals - QT him away from all your other animals and always work with him AFTER you've worked with your existing group.

Re: Help with my new editions
i might hold off on that appointment because i had him out for about 20 minuets with no drool, so maby he just drank before i took him out. I put him on aspen, even though i like to keep my new arivals on news paper because aspen holds humidity better. I bumped up the temps, and humidity. What should i keep the humidity at? Better be safe then sorry

Re: Help with my new editions
ill see how he is over the weekend because the nearest vet to me is like 2 and a half hrs away

Re: Help with my new editions
Check the edges of the water bowl and the enclosure and if you see that he's "slimed" them from rubbing his face on them, you need to get him seen sooner, not later.
Where are you located that there's not a vet for 2 1/2 hours?
In the meantime - practice strict quarantine.

Re: Help with my new editions
there is a closer vet but i really dont trust them, but if i see any more signs i will make the drive

lower humidity helps dry up the mucus

Re: Help with my new editions
im pretty sure higher is better because humidity that is to low is what causes it

Actually, Adam has commented on this before - higher humidity helps to break up the mucus.

Lets put it this way. When you have a cold and are congested, do you think dry air helps it at all?
No. That is why people get humidifiers when they are sick and take hot showers. The humidity helps break up the mucous in your sinuses and lungs.

Re: Help with my new editions
humidity should be at 55 to 60% normally....not sure what you should bump it up to or what you have had it at previously

Re: Help with my new editions
well i talked to my vet over the phone and he said there is no reason to take the ball to him, because the ball isnt drooling any more, i opened his mouth with a card and saw no mucus and only a little bubbles, not much at all, and no wheezing or whistling when breathing. I was just over reacting but just in case i bumped the humidity and temps. Thanks for everyone help!!

Re: Help with my new editions
guess ill just bite my tounge and keep doing what works for me.
sure the hot shower helps but feels to me like its more the heat than the moisture that helps, but humid air just makes me feel stuffy again, i like it dry. but im done, forget i was here
