    Rack Building Help
Hi ive been looking to build a rack for 41q sterilite tubs the long way, so if you would put it against a wall it would protrude out less. I want to build it out of melamine, and want it to hold 6 tubs. Any one know what measurements i would need, and how many peaces of 4' by 8' melamine would i need?

Get a tape measure and calculator? :P If you were going the other way with I could help you out with some dimensions from the rack I just built recently, but they won't work sideways due to the way the sides on the 41qt tubs bow.

    +1

first step to building is learning to calculate materials... otherwise your gonna have a hard time with it.

plus 41 is pretty wide. u may notice a sag, and it makes it harder to move the tubs

I think I know exactly what you are looking to make. This is basically the same idea I had with my rack. I used 32qt tubs though. Any reason why you want to go with the 41qt?

Personally, I won't be doing a ton of breeding for a few years which means most of my females won't be that huge. Once I am out of school I plan to build a female breeder rack and a hatchling rack.

Will you please be a little more patient?

This is not a chatroom - it may take a while to get the specific answers you need.

Three bumps inside two hours is ridiculous unless you have a genuine emergency. :colbert:

kaorte that is EXACTLY what im looking to build, but i compromised. I took the idea from rabernet's economy rack and but it to work with a slightly bigger plastic rack from home depot, but had to leave the tops on because of the plastic having slits in it ill try and get a pic up a little later

kaorte, i was looking at your rack building progress thread and wanted to know- when you wire all that heat tape each on its own circuit, how to you plug it all into one t stat? do u have more than one or does yours have alot of plugs? I know my helix dosent... Ive been looking but i cant find a power strip that has only a 2 prong plug and dosent have a surge protecter

Yeah. The Johnson control stat that I have has 6 outlets on a power strip.

I don't have any experience with helix stats but I assume there is a way to wire a power strip into it.

yeah i was looking in home depot and a can only find grounded power strips with durge protectors which can short out the helix, but ill keep looking.

Don't you want a grounded power strip with a surge protection button?

I would check target or something. They might have something.

    Re: Rack Building Help
no because a grounded plug has 3 prongs not 2, and the helix can only take 2 prongs and a surge protector will short out the t stat

    Re: Rack Building Help
So get a power strip without a surge protector? I'd bet that most of what you're looking at are just power strips anyway. Just because it has the switch doesn't mean it's a surge protector.

i know that they all say surge protector, but in the hardwere store i bought 2 small 3 outlet extenders- nothing fancy- no wire no plug just a plain old adapter :)

I have built a 41qt sideways. It has 4 41qts and 6 32qt. I have had no sagging. Its on wheels. I have one continuous piece of heat tape through it. It keeps all the tubes at one temp very well I run that rack and 3 others on my herpstat pro without problems. I am still trying to find pictures sorry new computer old hard drive crashed. Not sure if i have any pictures of it anymore will take new ones of i can't find any of the old ones.

very cool, you can tell all your friends that everyone says you've got a nice rack:D

I've gotta find a girl that's like you, most of the chicks I know are deathly afraid of snakes. Plus the fact you built this yourself, my god I think I'm falling for you.;)

ugh.. how is it over engineered?

thats about how i would do it. 41 is going to be wide. trust me. I have a 31 or what ever they are wide. I now have some of the small 15's in there and then I went to put a 31 back in. it had sagged and was tight.

    :(
