Super Dwarf! I think it's gonna be my next purchase
It means filling out a questionaire a d submitting an application and all that lovely red tape, but I've always wanted a retic and a super dwarf is something I can safely handle on my own. And from what i've read I can keep one in a cb70 comfortably.
This has me super pumped. I just need some confirmation that a cb70 will be large enough for a male (or a female, this guy is a pet, but I may want to breed and in that case may want a feme) but as long as I can keep a male in one I am good to go.
I am really so pumped about this.

WTF is a cb70? Is it some kind of tub?
Retics are semi-arboreal snakes. You should NOT keep any retic in a tub. Period. That's my opinion.

Dude, where are you getting your info?
A super dwarf can be housed in a CB-70.

Sigh. Almost every large retic I've seen has been kept in a tub or a cage without much vertical space at all.
A cb70 should be plenty roomy for a super SD, and if it is not ill find a cage that is proper for it. But the red tape is really irking me, 100 bucks a year coerced from me just to keep a snake some politician put on a list.

For a male, a CB 70 MIGHT work. For adult SD retics they usually require a minimum tub size of 9 ½ in. H x 31 in. W x 39 in. L. I also noticed you live in Fl. in the state of FL. you need a license to own a retic regardless of the subspecies.

Yeah I know about the damn regulations. Already been on the phone with the FWC about it.

Re: Super Dwarf! I think it's gonna be my next purchase
If you are unhappy about living in a State where you need a license to keep a pet, perhaps you should move to one where they are totally forbidden. Then your $100 a year won't seem so bad...
Just because a lot of retics are kept in "low height" enclosures doesn't make it right. My last one rarely came to ground level.

Who says people are housing them how they should be housed compared to "what works". How many people intend on breeding the snakes they have in a "tub or a cage without much vertical space at all"? How many are housing them as strictly pets?
"Should be" sounds a lot like "what works". I have a friend with YEARLING SD retics and they crawl all over the CB-70 tub and he knows he needs to upgrade them. These SD retics are only about 3' long. Retics (no matter what type) are not ball pythons. They don't curl up in a corner and hide all day.

Regardless of if you are going breed them or are just keeping them as pets, they'll still require the same husbandry and tub/tank size.
And yes they do stay curled up, both of mine stay curled up a majority of the time(not all the time but for the most part.) A CB 70 for a 3 ft. SD Retic is too large which is why that one is moving around so much; they tend to do that when they are stress.

Re: Super Dwarf! I think it's gonna be my next purchase
I'd like to know where you got your information.
Retics don't curl up and sit around all day. Snakes that DO curl up and sit around all day have figured out that they are in a tiny, uninteresting escape-proof box/tub/enclosure that is not worth checking out anymore. Even my balls are cruising their enclosures (not tubs) all night, and it's not because they're stressed, or hungry, or whatever else you folks think might make a ball go cruising. It's called options.
Anyhow, like I said: retics are semi-arboreal. I don't care what you see retics housed in; they do not belong in tubs or low-height enclosures.

I must have weird retics then becuase mine are constantly moving around. Nothing like my burms or anaconda

Boy, sounds like you've been keeping retics a lot longer than my friend!

Re: Super Dwarf! I think it's gonna be my next purchase
Well I thought a tub would be ok because I've seen full sized retics in 6x2x2 or similarly sized cages and there is no way for a full grown one to be able to have any aborealness(hehe I like that made up word) in that kind of cage.
I've even heard that it's ok to keep carpets in a tub, since they are only semi aboreal I'm not sure I'd see the big difference. They have their hides as a slight perch if they so choose. Which is what I was told carpets will do and not have any problems.
And I don't want to have bad husbandry but I am just getting a lot of conflicting info.

Re: Super Dwarf! I think it's gonna be my next purchase
Honestly just listen to Chris, and you'll be fine. He has taugh me quite a bit with out him even knowing, and everything he's said has been working out well for me. Bottom line is, Retic's enjoy an arboreal cage, and with a super dwarf, I think it should be very easy to accomplish, unlike with regular retic's. Go get a nice 4x2x2, divide it in half for now, and give him the extra space later. If it's a pet, then make it a nice happy, display pet, if it's a breeder, make it a nice, happy, display breeder. I don't see the point of having snakes in tubs. The reason I keep them is cause I love them, and I love to actually see them. I know tubs are convenient, but at what cost... Take fromt that what you will, ~Caylan.S.~

Everyone has different opinions on housing. Most people keep there retics in 6 and 8 foot cages including myself. But thats not to say if I did give my retics a large cage that they would not use it. Everytime Ive ever been to the atlanta zoo there retic has always been off the ground up high. Ive never seen it on the ground.

Re: Super Dwarf! I think it's gonna be my next purchase
So would a 36x20x18 work for an adult SD retic?

Re: Super Dwarf! I think it's gonna be my next purchase
I have an SD currently that is almost a year old. Hes about 3- 3 1/2 feet and i wouldnt give him anything smaller than a 4X2X1 that he is getting very soon. They're so curious and when they're awake are all over the place. But id highly suggest the SD's. They're awsome! Im thinking about getting my guy a female so i can breed at sometime. And from what ive read a tub is not the way for SD retics. I think youd be better off with a nice custom cage that is 4X2X1.

Re: Super Dwarf! I think it's gonna be my next purchase
sometimes its just fun watching retics move around and you cant do that when there in a tub.

I got my info from NERD, Henry Piorun, and Garrick Demeyer. As for my comment on my sd retics not being all that active is from my observations. Yes they do move around at night and sometime during the morning, but mostly during the day no (sorry I should a specified.) About 4 months ago (when they were about 3 feet) I did upgrade them to a CB 70, once I did that I noticed they were more aggressive than usual and went off feed, about 3 weeks and 3 refused meals later I decided to put them back in their old tubs - which was something roughly the size of a 32 qt. tub but with more height. Once I put them back, they started feeding again, and their behavior was back to what it use to be.
As for the tub debate, for Super Dwarf Retics I disagree. Not all tubs are low height. Some have more than enough climbing space for a super dwarf.
PS: sorry for the delayed response, I broke my glasses and I can barely read a thing, had to get help from my cousin to read.

Re: Super Dwarf! I think it's gonna be my next purchase
its all preference.
its like have a Rat snake in a tub.
they are semi arboreal!
a tub is ok i guess, if thats your choice..
a female should be in a 4x2x1... <-- minimum.
so, i mean... good luck, id personally go onto another site, with people who know more about retics, SDs in particular, and look around.
people dont need to jump on your case.
just do more research and good luck.

Re: Super Dwarf! I think it's gonna be my next purchase
IMO, neonate retics of any subspecies do best in tubs. SuperDwarf neonates are TINY, and should thrive in an appropriate tub setup. I'd advise a tub that's at least 12 inches tall though. I find that they are more arboreal and active the first year of their lives than after they become sub-adult to adults. Retics in general are more active than say, burms or balls, but I don't believe they require gigantic room-sized caging to thrive well in captivity.
For a true adult SD (which should grow no larger than 6ft or so, and be quite slender), I believe a 48Wx24Wx18-24(H) is perfect. You can still provide some low branches if the snake is inclined to climb, and the animal should have ample room to roam around or stretch out if it likes.
As far as the tub debate goes, I find most species of young snakes do very well when started in them, as opposed to aquariums or simply putting a tiny neonate in a huge cage. The tubs provide a sense of security, optimum temps and humidity. I'm not sure if the OP was suggesting housing and adult SD retic in a tub, but if he is, the only one that I think may be suitable is the VE175 tub sold by reptiletubs.com

Awesome post, exactly what I wanted to hear. Now the next thing I wanna hear is that I can keep one without the state probing me.
