Winter is Coming! (knitting)
Well for most of us it is! Some people know that I like to knit hats so the hat request list has been filling up for this year! I make them for free for my friends if they provide the yarn or use yarn I already have. So far I have made 3 this week and am almost done with a 4th!
I still have 4 more on my to do list though! Here are a couple I have made recently and in the past. I will post more pictures as I complete the hats or as I randomly find them :)

I plan on making myself a strawberry hat when I get the chance! :giggle:

I don't either, which is why I knit hats. They are small projects and only take me a few days to complete...not WHOLE days, just like a few hours a day.

Re: Winter is Coming! (knitting)
That is so cool that you knit. I used to knit, but I just lost interest after a while.

Same here. I used to knit a lot in middle school. I learned in elementary school so I will basically never forget how to do it. I stopped during high school and picked it up again last year.

Those hats look nice btw, you should knit me one :)

Thanks, no rush though. Louisiana doesn't have extremely cold winters or anything, although it can get really chilly sometimes.

I lived in lafayette many years ago, when I was in middle school.
My minnesota friends don't believe me when I tell them that a "snow day" was declared whenever it snowed ;)
I have yet to experience a winter in MN that didn't hit -40 after windchill at least once.

Re: Winter is Coming! (knitting)
To the OP: cute hats! My GF crochets, she feels the same way about her projects, she likes small things because they go faster. She's got an afghan rug she's been working on for a long time but seems to have lost interest because it's so darn big and takes so much darn time. She prefers small bags, hats, and scarves. She's planning on picking up knitting this year :)
I like little projects I can do with my hands, I'm actually kind of surprised I haven't picked it up myself. At the moment my "crafty" stuff has been doing homemade fishing lures. I can sit in front of the TV and catch up on House/Heroes/Weeds/True Blood, with my utility knife and a piece of wood. Later I go out fishing!

Man -I want to learn how to knit!!!!

Re: Winter is Coming! (knitting)
That's cool! I actually tried to pick up knitting, but couldn't even get the actual "knit" down. I think my needles are too big though. I'm tempted to try and pick it up again, but I don't want to run into the same problem!

You should try again! Once you get the hang of it it gets very easy and I find it theraputic.

I can teach you Robin... just do not tell anyone.
I used to do respite care at the hospital for an ASO... and I taught myself how to knit. You need something to do when listening to someone death rattle for 8-12 hours. :(
All my friends mocked me, till they realized those trendy little skull caps they were paying 40.0 for I was making for about 4.0... :)

Well, what are you waiting on? Get your butt on down to GA!
What wonderful work you did, Bruce.

Re: Winter is Coming! (knitting)
I will be on the next plane... hide the snakes though or we will not get much done Robin.
B
PS: As far as the respite... hardest thing I ever did, but it was amazing (sorry not hijacking K) it really does fill you with a sense of peace strange as that sounds. I did 4, and then my gram...and after my gram I just stopped doing it (gram was 16 hours a day) and I needed a break.
And every item I made had a story, so I would think of that person when I was wearing that item (sweater, afghan, hats, etc.).

Re: Winter is Coming! (knitting)
Got pictures of anything you have made? I would love to see your work, and anyone else who likes to knit or crochet :)
I am wearing my strawberry hat.

Re: Winter is Coming! (knitting)
Here in Utah, we get a lot of snow, especially if we have a bad winter. :D Those hats are lovely! I especially liked the little "strawberry" one. Great job on the knitting.

No pics of anything... lost all the pics in the fire, same with all the things I had made. (I seriously hate saying that all the time).
But I made 2 afghans for my place (and 2 for other people)... big uns too, lots of heavy wool sweaters (zippers and no zippers). Hoodies. All my nieces and nephews got afghans when they were born, and none of that mile a minute crap either (I kid - OK not really). Tons of hats and gloves and scarves and all that.
I do not know if you have ever checked into this, but alot of cities have donation orgs, where you knit or crochet up your left over yarn into a standard sized granny square and then they piece them together and make afghans for people that are terminally ill. I found them through the ASO that I was collaborating with at the time.
I did that for a LONG time and it was great. You get to do it in your spare time, but you do not have to commit to finishing the project. I got about 4 people doing it that had never K or C'd before. I mean granny squares are so easy.
I even went to one of their afghan-a-thons and it was me (I was 30 at the time) and about 8 women in their 70's. I ate more sugar coookies that day that I have ever even seen before!!! It was a blast. I took my friend Laur, a tatted up punk rock freak and she had so much fun.
So me... a woman with bright purple hair, and 8 women with blue hair. :P

Re: Winter is Coming! (knitting)
Boo about the fire! :( Hopefully you can make some new replacements :)
But man Bruce, that is pretty awesome. I can never finish bigger projects. I like something that I can pick up and finish in 2-3 sittings. :P If something takes too long I usually end up abandoning it.
I really would like to knit some blankets but I feel like I don't have the time. I heard crocheting is easier when it comes to big things but I just can't figure out how to crochet worth my life. D:

Re: Winter is Coming! (knitting)
Crocheting is super easy... and if you can do patterns and color changes in knitting, then c'ing will be a breeze for you... or rather, should be. :)
-
Re: Winter is Coming! (knitting)
Well then :) Perhaps I will give it a shot after I finish these next few hats. I already have a crochet hook, and lots and lots of yarn.

Re: Winter is Coming! (knitting)
Oh man you do an awesome job!!! I'm so jealous! I can only crotchet and nothing as pretty as that. I haven't been able to teach myself any fancy designs :( I do like to make hats and scarves though! I'm currently working on a baby blanket for my cousin (the big sister I never had) she's having her first baby!!!!

Re: Winter is Coming! (knitting)

Re: Winter is Coming! (knitting)
So!!! I learned how to crochet and I am in the process of making my first project....a blanket... :giggle: I know its kind of big for a first project but I am determined!
Anyway, here is another hat:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2439/...046d45a972.jpg
So I have decided that knitting small things is easy and crocheting big things is easy. I finished like 6" of the blanket in two days, and I have never crocheted in my life! Maybe I am just a genius!
-
Re: Winter is Coming! (knitting)
Blanket is at about 2 feet now. Haha I will never be done!!
Finished another hat. I think this might be one of my favorites!

Re: Winter is Coming! (knitting)
awe cute! i started crocheting awhile ago and gave up because i had no one to teach me, i tried looking online but it was too difficult! i want a strawberry hat! how much?! :)
-
Re: Winter is Coming! (knitting)
Yeah I tried learning how to crochet myself a while ago but I couldn't catch on. Then I tried again recently and picked it up a little better this time.
Well, I am not really selling them but I don't think I could charge more than $10
