    UPS smashed a rack
I built a rack last week that I shipped out, and yesterday I received an email that t was destroyed during shipping, along with graphic pictures. It was broken into pieces. Even the Rubbermaid tubs that were in each slot were cracked and missing pieces of plastic. I couldn't believe the pictures. The driver had to have thrown the box off the truck or something for the amount of damage there was. I'm going to take care of it and make sure the customer is happy, but I needed to vent.

    Hi,

Do you have any comeback against UPS at that point? Or are you just plain out the money? :(

Is it wrong to add the insurance yourself, even if the customer does not want it?

Have you had a talk with UPS?

Could you post some of the pics up here?

Thats a shame Jake, I've received some pretty beat up packages from UPS too in the past. Was your shipment insured?

Could have been a variety of things. If it was bulk (over 70lbs), it could have fallen off the bulk rollers. People who bring bulk to the semi could have just thrown it down at the base of the semi. Could have been a little person loading the semi and was flipping it til they got it to spot they wanted it. Could have been too much weight in a wall. Load straps weren't properly used. May have been too heavy for the person who put it into the delivery truck so they may have tossed it. Or the driver just kicked it out of the back of the truck because it was too heavy.

I use to work at UPS, so I know pretty much anything that can happen. I got a lot of busted crap coming into the truck I was loading. No one really cares either. Just want to finish their job and go home.

Dont let them get away with it, start calling customer support and just keep working up supervisors until something is done.

I will never use UPS again.

My mother has a business shipping medical supplies internationally and has warned me never to use UPS. She told me they are the biggest company and have the "who cares" customer service policy because they still get mega business. They have destroyed many a package on her and we are talking medical equipment worth many $1,000's.

I made the mistake of using them and it cost me a pair of albinos. they lost them for 4 days. I hand delivered that box of live to a UPS station and as I am telling the guy they are live animals (also written in bold letters all over the package) the guy is spinning the box and I had to stop him! Never again.

Jake I am sure you will only get more frustrated trying to contact them as their customer service by far the worst.

Now I only ship Fed Ex or Delta Dash.

I have heard too many UPS nightmares and this is just another.

fedex ground is really bad here just like you shared with ups. really it depends on the area. i also had ups put a snake in a cooler because it said perishable on the box, which it did say right above live harmless reptiles!

I sent it through ShipYourReptiles, so I emailed them to see what I should do. I didn't pay for extra insurance for this one, for the first time ever, so it was only insured for $100. The buyer opened a claim before he emailed me, but I'm trying to get it switched over to me since any claim will take a long time, so I just want to take care of it, then see what I get back later. I am definitely going to throw a fit with UPS. These damages are not from simple mishandling.

It was a 4-high 28qt melamine rack, held together with 6x 2" construction screws per shelf, and reinforced with metal braces in the back. It was flawless when I dropped it off at UPS. It was 80lbs, and the customer wasn't there to sign for it on the first attempt, so I'm guessing the driver got mad that he had to lug it around, but who knows? It also had big, red FRAGILE stickers all over it, for what it's worth.

    Wow, that's bad.

I'm fine with UPS handling my Newegg orders. USPS damages almost everything I get through them. And I only know FedEx through work, but FedEx seems to actually care the most, while the other two just kind of jet around tossing things on my doorstep and running off.

UPS and FEDEX are both crappy companes, depending on the area. As soon who has worked with both UPS and FEDEX with shipping 1000s of Computers, I can honestly say one isn't better than the other. What I can say is that the area you're shipping too strongly depends on the better carrier. I've found that anything on the EAST coast usually FEDEX and UPS are both fine, west coast I've had more issues with UPS, and everything in between, well that just depensd on if there is a major city near by or not.

That friggin sucks, I'ld tear that driver a new one if I saw him do that.

In my experience, UPS is the worst when it comes to fragile and large packages.

That's awful, I'd be livid if that happened to me! UPS and FedEx can do some really crappy work at times. I had a box marked fragile show up looking like my dog played with it. Fortunately the item inside was fine. My last shipment of snakes didn't show up until after 5pm, and all CS could tell me was the driver had until 7pm. Our usual driver normally has overnight stuff at my door by 11 am, so I was pretty worried. Everyone in the box arrived fine though. A little warm, but fine. The guy that drives the route my parents live on is awful. I was there one day when he delivered my dad's laptop, and he literally throws packages up on the porch. He goes maybe 2 steps up and tosses it so that it slides and hits the door. Complaining to UPS doesn't work, he just keeps doing it. If he's lucky he'll deliver one day while my brother is home, he's been waiting to catch him tossing stuff and is ready to give him a verbal butt kicking, lol.

    Re: UPS smashed a rack
I personally send out everything UPS(via SYR) and have had very few problems. When it comes to receiving racks and incubators I always get them Fed-Ex(Knock on Wood...) but when it comes to receiving animals FedEx won't even bring the package to my door they will just leave it sitting under the sun on our driveway...

If I was a rack manufacturer I would definitely use FedEx, but animal wise I`m happy with UPS :)

Ive went on interviews with both fedex and ups and when you walk through you see exactly how much care goes into handling your packages. From what I saw its amazing "any" packages make it out of there

    Wow......That is crazy bad damage.

I cant even think how much force is needed to crack the tubs like that, especially being shipped.

    Re: UPS smashed a rack
I always write Fragile all over the box, and when I make the sale of something that can be broken, I always say, if you don't purchase insurance if something happens during shipping then it's on you. It will not be covered, and I have only had one incident where I shipped something and the guy didn't want insurance and the package got damaged and he wanted me to cover it. I said nope, like it says on the ebay page, if you don't purchase insurance, it will not be covered by me or ups.
