    OMFG!!! somebody help me please
Jesus Christ!!! My mouse was eating his usual today, 2 fuzzies. while swallowing the last one I looked at him and oh my god!!

He has a slit, like half an inch long on his bottom jaw in the middle, I COULD SEE THE MOUSE HAIR THROUGH IT!!!!!

I feel terrible, he doesn't appear to be uncomfortable or anything but it is really scaring me if you can't tell.

Please somebody what do I do?

You're sure it's a slit and you didn't just see the mouse hair through it's skin while it was swallowing?

If so, I'd get it to the vet stat, something like that will have to be stitched or stapled up.

I think you might be over-reacting.
Can you get a picture or open his mouth to see if there's a wound?

I am freaking right out man. Yes I seen hair through wait seemed to be a slit in the bottom of his jaw. after he was done I looked at the bottom of his jaw and there is a straight line sort of indented where I seen the hole.

I have seen this indentation before when I first got him but never noticed a hole. Looking at it now it doesn't look like a wound, but it actually looks like it is supposed to be there, Do your guys' snakes have this line on the bottom jaw?

I definitely seen hair through this area though, that is for sure.

Please remain calm. This is normal. It is menat to be like that to allow the lower jaw to expand to accept the food.

Did you mean you actually saw strands of fur sticking OUT of the skin or that you could see rodent fur THROUGH the skin?

I've never seen hair go THROUGH the skin.

I am not sure now if it was sticking through the skin but if not the skin was pretty damn transparent there

its pretty thin skin there. It stretches when they eat so that they can fit prey bigger than the size of their heads in their mouths.

If you look closely, they also have very small scales on that batch of skin. You may have been seeing those, and thought it was fur.

    Oh, yeah. Remain CALM.:O

We need to post a warning as a sticky because this seems to freak out newbies quite frequently.

This is normal on all ball pythons, their jaws are split on the bottom:

There's another hole at the other end of the snake too. You might see hair out of that one as well. It's normal. Panic not.

If there was ever any panic at all.

Yeah, you failed pretty hard. But you learned something and gave everyone a pretty good laugh and seem to be in fair humor about it yourself. So in the end it's all okay.

However if, like me, you wake up one day to little drops of blood on the newsprint you keep your snake on and find that your snake has 3 gashes under it's lower jaw and two of them are bleeding, yeah... then it's time to panic.

    Heh,

Once he has had 48 hours to digest his meal go see if you can find his belly button too - people often freak out when they find that one too and assume he has been cut. :D

Meh, thats a bit harsh no? I work at Petsmart and I would NEVER give out false information, nor would anyone that works at my store. Yes some stores have pimply faced teenagers just trying to afford a pack of cigarettes, but you shouldn't write off ALL pet store employee's :(

    :colbert:

Honestly, i'll write off whatever I want too. I'd rather do the research myself than let anyone else tell me how to keep my animals, especially those employees in big box pet stores that are much better known for their lack of compassion for these animals. They won't even change their care sheets or let their BPs eat the right size prey.

There are good pet store employees, but for the other 96% of the time, maybe we should take what they say with a grain of salt, or even the entire shaker.

:/ (<- supposed to be "meh" face, but i dont think we have one! :O)

ahh dont worry about it too much. I remember years ago the first time my BP was going into shed, I didnt know their bellies could turn bright pink! I started crying & looked up emergency vets none of which would see me so late. I was thinking what a horrible person I was because my snake got burned from her UTH. (even though it was hooked to a t-stat) I kept feeling the heat mat and was baffled because it wasnt HOT..

I did a little more searching online while waiting for the vets offices to open and found a pic of a PB's belly going into shed. Looked JUST like my snakes belly and boyyyyyyy what a relief it was to find out it was normal!!

so yeah.. thats my embarrassing shoulda known better story :)

I got scared once...I couldn't find my Ball Python's legs...Thought he lost them in battle, or probably when I wasn't looking, the mice gnawed it off. I started to panic even more when I noticed that my Ball Python hasn't blinked for over a minute. Then I remembered...He's not a lizard...silly me...
