?? Number of Codom Breeder Males ??

Just wondering how many codom breeder males you guys keep on hand. If you breed to sell do you keep multiple males or 1 or 2? This is for breeders that breed with intent of selling hatchlings, either to support your hobby or for profit. I have 5 pastels, 3 spiders, and 3 mojaves, 2 cinnys, 2 pins, and one black pastel and lesser. Chime in and let me know how many codom breeder males you have in your collection.

I think having a backup male is a good Idea. Just in case one gets sick or something happens then your season istn't shot.

Adam, I'm with you there I've stopped picking up single females though.. and started "SLOWLY" adding double and in the near future triple females..

That's step 2 in this crazy adventure!! I'm still at step one, pushing codoms and single recessives. :( Will get there one day. Hey a good idea would be for you and Ed to give me all your codoms you don't want anymore!! :taz:

Charlie I have a feeling that Adam has co-dom males than I have snakes..

I throw all of my male CoDoms in the freezer with the Normal males... :rolleyes:

That's an absolutely horrible thing to say and/or even worse do. If you don't want to keep them then sell them or give them away. There's no reason to kill them just because you don't want them. That is straight up animal cruelty!

So Charlie...how many codom males do you have?

I have:

2 Pastels, 1 Black Pastel, 1 Mojave, 1 Pinstripe, 1 Spotnose, 1 YB. I am not holding back any male co doms. Concentrating right now on getting female co doms so I can hold back double co doms next season and take it from there.

Like Adam said I think the way to do it is doubles or triples.Unless you have a particular project your working on (ie=Black Pastel xBlack Pastel or a recessive) Just my :twocents:

I am down to 2 and slowly moving toward double and triple genes males.

Now females it’s another story ;)

One of each for me. Definitely will never have more then one male of the same Codom morph. In my breeding plans it would just be wasteful. Once I make doubles I will probably faze out my single Codom morphs. Nothing else would make sense to me.

Of course the opposite is true for Codom females. I want as many of those as I can get my hands on... regardless of repeats.

Well not all mine are breeders but males go like this. I have a Pastave, Pewter, Fire, Enchi, Cinna-Bee, Caramel, Albino, Pied, Lesser on breeder loan, and Teq the Dinker.

Here they are..(some are dominant..I'm just including everything except recessives)
Lemon Pastel
Mojave
Spider
Genetic Granite
Cinny
Black pastel
Pastel poss het hypo
Pinstripe poss het albino
Lesser
Yellowbelly

but this year I'm getting:
Enchi
Sugar or Calico

I am also going to replace the pastels/cinny with double codoms(bees, blasts, pewters)

So to answer my question gererally most of you are not keeping more than one codom breeder male around. Even if your breeders are doubles, you will not keep multiple bees, pewters, blast, ect?

I like to keep about 3 males of the same type to every ten females give or take.

Like Adam said, I think it has to do with how many females you expect them to breed with each year.....I only have about 10 normal breeder females left, so one male per girl is enough, If I had the hundreds of snakes Mr Wysocki has, I would have bigger groups of each co doms.

although we are much smaller then most people here,but we are going with the 2 of each male trend,i traded off my pastel male,so our only pastel hit this year will be our shot at a bee,but we hav 2 pastel males being raised up,we have 2 het pieds,2 cinnies,,so far just one YB and one mojave,but i am getting a OB male to use as a 2nd YB,so incase one male just doesnt go(like last season one het pied wouldnt go,the 2nd did)or issueswith health with one,or you wanna run a lot of female to a certain morph that year,haveing a 2nd or even 3rd male of that type does come in handy

That's a good point too. Some people keep different types of the same morph...busy pin/reduced pin, high white/low white spider, etc..

1 Pastel

I plan on getting at least one co-dom male at Daytona next year. :) I plan on keeping 1.1 of each morph, no matter if it is dom, co-dom, or recessive, or a combination of things. :) That's far in the future though. This year, I'm hoping to produce a female spider and a female pastel so then I'll have my 1.1 of Spider and Pastel. :) Then next year, I'm hoping to produce a male pin.

I've only got 40 or so snakes (that I'm keeping) so far, and I've honestly got too MANY males right now, but here's what I've got:

2 lessers--one breeder, and his son from this year who's going to back him up.
1 orange ghost
1 albino
1 yellowbelly
1 spider
1 cinnamon
1 woma
2 pastels (their father is up for sale, and one of them is my husband's pet, so not technically a breeder).
1 mojave
1 pied

I'm at the stage now where I'm picking up lots of normal females, and putting the lessers with most of them. I have a couple of female het pieds to go with the pied, and 3 het albinos to go with the albino. I only have one adult morph female, a woma. She's going with a lesser again this coming.
The rest of the males will be put with just ONE female apiece--if she doesn't go, then I don't get any of those. I'll be keeping every female from each one of those single clutches--the rest will be for sale. I'll only be keeping a woma-lesser if I happen to produce 2.

My reason for having all those males in the first place is finally coming into play--to make me lots of morph females, so I can move to the next step, lol. I'll be keeping just one each of them on hand, too--as soon as possible, they'll be going with a female of the same morph to make me double co-dom males. They will be retired and sold as soon as I have a proven double-co-dom of their type to replace them. I'll have to be picky about those pairings, though, as quality will be extremely important. I may need to 'upgrade' my pastels down the road. The male pastel was my first morph, and my current pastels are really nice and blushy, but not as bright as I would like, as adults. My other males are superb, though. Hopefully I'll be able to pair them with really good complimentary normals, and produce some killer females. I'm pretty pleased with what I've gotten so far. Even the hets look great. :)
