Helix thermostat- where to put the probe
ok i just got my helix thermostat in the mail today and wanted to know where to put the probe. I taped it down to the bottom of one of my tubs, right above the heat tape. Is this right? Thanks.

You should attach it directly to your heat tape outside of the tub.

Putting it inside the tub will risk it getting wet or dislodged which will affect your temps big time.

You then adjust the temp on the helix so that you get the temps you want inside the tubs.

yeah but when it is set at 94 degrees inside the tub the tape is like 115 so if i put the probe on the tape it would decrease temps alot

It doesnt matter what the thermostat is at as long as the tubs are at the right temps. For example i have my herpstat set to 101 degrees to keep perfect temps.

so then attach it to the heat tape and use my temp gun to set it accordingly?

What size heat tape are you using? Is it cold in the room where the set up is in?

I've had to set my Helix to as high as 105 in the winter but 115 is kinda high.

no the helix is set to 94 the tape itself is 115, the hotstopt in the tub(with no substraight) is 94

Right, but if you were to put the probe directly on the heat tape outside then you would need to set it to 115 in order to get the 94 in the tub. Hopefully that isn't the case.

I would recommend moving the probe to the heat tape and seeing what you need to set the Helix to in order to get your temps.

Having it inside the tub itself is not good either way.

i tried that but my helix only goes up to 110 so what i did was (having extra room on my shelve system not rack system) i made a 15q into a "dummy tub" and used it to achieve perfect temps: :)

well i tried your way again and it actually worked out pretty good with the probe on the heat tape. Inside the tub 94 degrees should feel only warm to out touch, not hot right?

Yes it should not feel hot but verifying with a digital thermometer or temp gun is the proper way to go about it.

if i click the temp gun one time it will read 94, then 95, then 94, then 96, then 94, then 95, is my temp fluctuating like crazy or is this just the temp gun?

Make sure you're holding the temp gun close enough. They have a ratio depending on the model you buy. The temp gun is also reading surface temps so they can vary a bit depending where in the tub you're checking.

If you're using paper as a substrate make sure there is a hide or something in there holding it down when you're measuring temps. I personally keep my hot spot in the 90-92 range. There is nothing wrong with 94 but if it consistently hits 96 it might be a tad too hot.

Patience and persistence are the key to this hobby :)

    Congrats.

In my new rack I am going to have extra tubs so I amthinking about just putting the probe in that tub with the same amount of substrate and set it to 94*. That way I don't have to do the trial and error of seeing how much heat is lost between the heat tape and the enclosure or risk the probe getting displaced.

thats what i did and it worked perfactly, i judt didnt do it and put the probe on the heat tape because i needed the extra room, if u have extra room go for it

is it ok for a adult bp in a 41q tub that i have one strip of 3"heat tape in the hot side? Can the bp have the 3" tape run down the middle of its body, and that will heat all of it?

I think 3" will do but 4" would be better. If you already have the 3" try it and check out the tub's temps in different spots and see if the snake is getting enough heat.

The heat will radiate through the tub so if you already have the 3" I say try it.
