Finally introducing Snickets!
I don't have actual pictures, I haven't wanted to spook her. So I filmed her eating :D This was her 4th live meal with us, and after she digests this one, we're going to start handling her! She doesn't come all the way out, so you can't see her full pattern. The lighting wasn't the best either!
YouTube - Snickets Eats Mouse
Hopefully I'll get actual pictures of her this week! Edit: I think she's going into shed, so she might be a little dull. I didn't get a close look when she was feeding, but after we got her a new hide and switched it out, and it looked like her black was a little glossy and grey.
Thanks for looking!

It's a cool snake, but I don't see the point in putting live feedings on youtube.

YOu have no idea how much those video helped me out before buying a snake. I didn't know anyone with a snake to watch feed, so I turned to the internet. Not all of the videos are helpful .. some are just sad, but there were a few that talked me through what goes on and how it all happens. I got to see if I could take feeding the animal before I bought one.
It was something I was really worried about before purchasing my first snake, and I am thankful to YouTube for helping me through that step.

Re: Finally introducing Snickets!
There is such a thing as F/T. When a snake eats F/T it is the exact same thing and you learn just as much. Without the added risks and negative reputation added to snakes.

Everyone has their own preference. I don't like frozen, and since she's still a baby, she hates frozen and pays no attention to it. Giving snakes a bad reputation? Yeah... Cuz it's not like they don't kill live things in the wild. Hence, at the end of the video, it says "Nature". Live feedings are something that come with snakes, imo.
Thanks for all the nice comments. The song is actually two, the first part is "You Create" and the part where the drums kick in starts the song "What I see"

There is also a risk of fooling people into thinking that all snakes will take F/T. I have 2 that have not and probably will never take it. Snakes eat mice/rats. It's a fact, and I would rather someone be ready for the whole package before they purchase than find out later they can't take it.
If that means YouTube videos ... then God bless them.

LOL it was adorable when u see her coming out of the top of the hide xD

Ok first off. I wasn't trying to argue with you, I said I liked the snake. I have no problem with you feeding live if your snake simply will not take it, but, since when is "I don't like frozen" an excuse for putting your snake in harms way? "Cuz it's not like they don't kill like things in the wild". I think you meant to say "because". Yes, they do kill things in the wild, but you should remember, this is not the wild, if you want it to do what it would in the wild, you should fly it to Africa. You put that snake in a cage and it is your responsibility to create a micro environment suitable for it's needs, in the safest way possible. And frankly, feeding like simply because "I don't like frozen" is not very safe. and you putting it on Youtube does give snakes a bad reputation. 90% of the public already fears them, and you are putting it in to their minds that all snake owners like to torture little mice and watch them die. When most are responsible enough to feed F/T. (I know there are a number of people on here who feed live responsibly).
This link should entertain you. Thinking about feeding LIVE? Welcome to the Live Pile

" I stun my mice with my trusty plastic spoon." They do the Bacon a bit but ah well they end up in my snake......
In the wild they do the same.. Eat live prey... I hate the hole spoon thing but you gotta do what you gotts to do......:D
Again Cool Video...:D

Re: Finally introducing Snickets!
Snakes in the wild get injured too. We don't see much of it because the snake often manages to hide away before it dies or is preyed upon by another predator.
You probably didn't even click the link, buddy.

Well ya they do get injured in the wild.. I will Agree .. I would like to see the size of the prey that actualy did the damage to all those snakes.....
The link was there it was looked at...:D

Re: Finally introducing Snickets!
They were rats. I have personally had a snake die from feeding it live when I was younger, I don't want anybody else to put their snake through that. I understand with supervision and precautions it is somewhat safe, but a risk is always there.

I don't have as much of a problem with stunning the pray as live feeding. It can be used to help convert from live to f/t.

I... don't even know where to start. I wasn't trying to argue with you either, just replying to you criticizing my video on youtube. How am I not supposed to reply to that? I'm not one to lie down and take a beating.
I'm not feeding her live because it's my preference. Sure, if she has a problem with live I will try other things, among them being F/T. Like I said in my previous post, she won't pay attention to F/T. Being that she has no problem eating live (I would know cuz I watch when I feed her) I'm not going to change it up. I had a hard time getting her to feed, and now that she's comfortable, I'm not going to mess with it.
So now you're saying that I'm putting my snake in harms way? Wow... I didn't know sitting beside her while she feeds and making sure the mouse doesn't bite or scratch her is putting her in harms way. Maybe I should just walk away?
There are hundreds of videos on youtube that have snakes feeding on live prey. If you're going to give me a guilt trip for putting ONE up, I expect that you have left a comment on every single other video on youtube doing the same.
You say that putting this video on youtube gives snakes a bad reputation. But then you say it makes people think all snake owners like to torture little mice and watch them die. So really you're worried about the reputation of snake owners. That's a solid worry. But think about this, people have owned snakes for 30+ years, one less video on youtube of a snake feeding on a live prey item (That was bred specifically for that use) is not going to change our reputation. If you went up to one person who had a problem with this, and explained to them that young snakes, especially Ball Pythons, are picky eaters and won't take an already dead mouse. Therefore, we have to feed live. Some people continue to feed live, some don't. It really depends on the snake. I'm sure they would understand.

Explain to me how was I not responsible. I'd love to know.

Things can happen quicker than you think and by time you intervene, it may be too late.
If you watch someone get shot, can you do anything about it? No, because it's too late.

Most people who feed live on youtube have no clue what they're doing. Have you ever read the comments on some of those videos? 99% of cases on youtube the owner is a complete idiot and shouldn't even own a snake.

At this rate, how long do you honestly see us being ABLE to have reptiles? Look at the bills hr2811, S373 and hr669. All of which were put into motion one way or another by irresponsible owners. The media and the government will try to find any reason they can for us not to be able to keep the animals we love.

Re: Finally introducing Snickets!
I understand nature completely . I also understand that by having collections sometimes well into the hundreds and having to feed them living food has nothing to do with nature and everything to do with our own personal desire to watch what we think is nature . In nature snakes are not hand fed in a small area a guaranteed meal .We forget that nature happens outside our window not in a tub set up for only one winner it is fixed no need to place bets . I have some baby snakes and have had no problem feeding them F/T . Some snakes may be picky but from what I have seen it is usually people not willing to put in the extra time or they think that their snake is missing out on something . Well it is , it's freedom . We have bred them to be pets why must we act like they are Tiger's who I am pretty sure also do not get live food if in captivity . I don't mean to sound rude this is just the way I see it . If other compassionate people think it goes down like this for every pet snake and rodent I believe it would stir them to action on fighting this just as people fight against animal testing . What makes human kind stronger then other living things is the HUMANity our ability to choose compassion over aggression . I don't think a snake will need counseling for not being given live food , but what does it say about us if we choose to not allow the mouse a peaceful death of sleep over suffocation .Witch would you prefer ? :weirdface
P.s . I am not attacking you :taz: This is more just for the general topic of this discussion . :snake: and only my personal opinion

You can't see it in the video. My BF was also watching, alot closer than I was. A bullet is alot quick than a devastating mouse bite.

Yes, I've read the comments. Alot of people who watch the videos are other snake owners, or future snake owners. There is the occasional "Omg you're so horrible you're going to ___"

Edit: Although I started this thread, I will not be replying to it anymore. So people who have problems with live feedings and what not flame away. I won't reply, even though I'll sit in my chair boiling to reply. I'll take the higher road :)

Mouse and Rat bites can be lethal. What about parasites? Sticking something in the mouses mouth isn't going to stop them.
There are more negative comments than positives.
Those bills didn't exist until recently. We shouldn't have to be fighting them.
You may be just fine... For now.

Re: Finally introducing Snickets!
Are you guys kidding with this? Give it a break. People should feed whatever is right for their snakes and themselves. I have fed more live prey than I can remember and I have never had an incident. Live feeding, when done responsibly and with the right sized prey for the animal is perfectly safe. I watched the video and I don't see anything wrong with what Elise did. The prey item was a safe size and the snake was never in danger. If she had thrown a medium rat in there I could see you being up in arms over it. She isn't taking joy in the death of the animal, but rather joy in how proud she is of her snake eating. Should you feed F/T? If you want to. Should you try to shame people for not feeding F/T? No way. Have all the opinions you want, but don't try to pass off incorrect information as fact or make someone feel bad about their feeder choices.

Your arguments are ridiculous. And after seeing your signature and what site you came from, it's no surprise. Did the zombie frozen thawed zealots of that other forum send you over to spread the gospel? Get your facts straight and for god sake, stop reading that ridiculous forum.

Elise, you did nothing wrong. Like was said before that was a perfect sized meal, and I can tell you care a lot about the well being of your animal. Keep doing what is working for you because no one knows that animal better. The video was awesome, and I thank you for sharing it.
I am leaving the thread now. Nothing like taking a personal video thread and cramming your agenda down it's throat trying to kill it.

Hello Snickets how cute you are . Really you d have a cute snake all other opinions aside. Did not think I would be taken like this :fork: oh well misunderstandings abound on forums like this . The mouse suffocating and fighting for it's life? Let me clue you in to something. Snakes eat rodents. Just because you feel better about yourself because you choose to feed yours rodents that someone else killed, humanely or not, doesn't mean others need to follow your lead. :colbert:

Nice video, I love his hide lol.
This is the natural way for snakes to eat, so it's millions of other animals. If you realy want to deffend animal cruelty, I advise you to look into the food YOU eat and how WE kill them. And after that, Look into how much of that "food" we waste.

I am a vegetarian . Does this offend you ? I also don't let my dogs run around like wolves hunting the neighbors cat thier food comes in a bag from the pet store . I am not expecting anyone to change their mind but I don't see why their is so much opposition to my opinion if you can't understand it that is not my problem nor a reason for me not to share it on a public forum . The world is changing if you have not noticed most people do care how animals raised for food are treated . Plastic boxes are not nature :O I am being calm I don't see why all the :rage: I guess you rather this :cens0r: wich is a whole different kind of cruelty , but I am now finished with this thread .:salute: I have snake poo to clean:gj:

Re: Finally introducing Snickets!
This is all very childish. If you (not meaning anyone in particular) do not like watching it then do not watch. The OP did NOTHING wrong. This is their thread, and even though it is on a public forum I think that you should not use it as a soap box for your "opinions" on what they are doing. Nothing is wrong with what they did.
-
Re: Finally introducing Snickets!
Well guess what, plants are living things too, Just because they dont feel like other livings things, it doesnt make them anything else than a living organism.
Plants come in bags too. This is an argument thats not going anywhere. There is a difference between the need to feed and cruelty.
You dont go attacking other people's life style when they have done nothing wrong just because you are a vegetarian or you run on your own life style.

Re: Finally introducing Snickets!
Hi,
Let's drop the F/T V's Live argument in this thread please.
It has been done to death numerous times before - go dig up one of those threads and read and post there instead.
We support both feeding paths as long as they are done responsibly and with respect to all animals concerned.

How exactly do you intend to keep the mouse from harming your snake? A live rodent will fight for its life, and there's not much you can do to keep it from biting your snake while it's being wrapped and crushed to death. Don't get me wrong here, I have live feeders as well, I just don't get how you standing over her tub is going to prevent injury.
