Here in Michigan we have "shall issue" and "castle doctrine laws" which basically translates to that if you attack somebody that is engaged in a lawful activity you are out of luck if things don't go your way. In many other Countries the honest citizen is the one out of luck if they are attacked.

Re: Stupid druggie nieghbors!!!
in the us if someone threatens you or your familys well being in your home you have the right to take matters into your own hands (i learned this in self defense lol) and to be honest. if someone breaks into your house and ur there and they threaten you gran a pen/pencil and stab him. call the cops and loc kurself in a room or whatever. its illegal to break into a home anywhere i believe. install video cameras on all corners of your property and record videos to a pc and if he does it again show the tape to the police. or put up a tall pickety fence he cant get over and put a gate w/ a lock on it lol. lock him out!
as far as my neighbors. i live at the end of a dead end street so i have 1 neighbor and 1 across the street. my neighbor next to me used to be the security guard at my high school , never home . and the one across the street is never home either and she comes home at around 2 AM and he car is kinda loud but i cant complain cause mine is equally loud. so yea i got decent neighbors.
EDIT:
as far as paintball guns if u can use one get one! there fun to shoot, and they hurt if hit in the wrong places. and it scares people if u put it on fully auto and pull the trigger without any paint it makes loud popping noises similar to a gun if u have the aiur hooked up to it.

well you run that risk with anything i guess.....knife/bat/beer bottle. jus depends on who has the will to overpower the other and take control of the situation.

Re: Stupid druggie nieghbors!!!
This is why I love florida, the gunshine state. If someone makes it INSIDE the house, you can legally shoot them.
The HS friend going after the guy in the car was wrong, and was lucky the guy didn't kill him.
Stabbing someone with a pencil is a bad idea. At best you'll cause slight pain, at worst, you'll ticc someone off, and then you'll be within reach. If you're going to try to attack someone, hit them with whatever handy is heavy(statuettes, chairs, cans, bottles), or use a blade. This is if you're not armed.
Here, if they break in, my worst thing is choosing what to shoot them with.

From the Canadian Criminal Code (C-46):
From Defense of Person:
Every one who is unlawfully assaulted without having provoked the assault is justified in repelling force by force if the force he uses is not intended to cause death or grievous bodily harm and is no more than is necessary to enable him to defend himself.
(2) Every one who is unlawfully assaulted and who causes death or grievous bodily harm in repelling the assault is justified if
(a) he causes it under reasonable apprehension of death or grievous bodily harm from the violence with which the assault was originally made or with which the assailant pursues his purposes; and
(b) he believes, on reasonable grounds, that he cannot otherwise preserve himself from death or grievous bodily harm.
And under Preventing Assault:
(1) Every one is justified in using force to defend himself or any one under his protection from assault, if he uses no more force than is necessary to prevent the assault or the repetition of it.
As far as Defense of Property, that's a bit different:
(1) Every one who is in peaceable possession of personal property, and every one lawfully assisting him, is justified
(a) in preventing a trespasser from taking it, or
(b) in taking it from a trespasser who has taken it,
if he does not strike or cause bodily harm to the trespasser.
Assault by trespasser
(2) Where a person who is in peaceable possession of personal property lays hands on it, a trespasser who persists in attempting to keep it or take it from him or from any one lawfully assisting him shall be deemed to commit an assault without justification or provocation.
R.S., c. C-34, s. 38.
Defence with claim of right
39. (1) Every one who is in peaceable possession of personal property under a claim of right, and every one acting under his authority, is protected from criminal responsibility for defending that possession, even against a person entitled by law to possession of it, if he uses no more force than is necessary.
Defence of dwelling
40. Every one who is in peaceable possession of a dwelling-house, and every one lawfully assisting him or acting under his authority, is justified in using as much force as is necessary to prevent any person from forcibly breaking into or forcibly entering the dwelling-house without lawful authority.
R.S., c. C-34, s. 40.
Defence of house or real property
41. (1) Every one who is in peaceable possession of a dwelling-house or real property, and every one lawfully assisting him or acting under his authority, is justified in using force to prevent any person from trespassing on the dwelling-house or real property, or to remove a trespasser therefrom, if he uses no more force than is necessary.

So my read of that is that you can use reasonable (and if needed lethal) force in defense of yourself or others if you believe there is no other course of action to preserve life. Property is another matter because the law in Canada recognizes that losing your life is not the same as losing the cash on top of your dresser. As well, of course, you have to deal with the issues of strict gun ownership and legal storage of firearms laws, especially with children in your home.
Personally I'd suggest you get a nice German Shepherd puppy from a good breeder, take it for training and enjoy a lovely pet that will warn you about strangers on your property. I grew up with a couple of huge male GSD's and they were wonderful family pets. However, I know it gave people something to think about if they wanted to break in with a 120 lb dog in the house who loved his family VERY much.
We did have one drunken and violent idiot who tried to get in once. Amazing how fast he exited the property when we turned the dog loose. Chum never put a tooth in the man, he just "escorted" him to our property line. :)

On this point, we certainly agree.

Move to the U.S.
Ya got to love the Castle Doctrine.
Back when my wife and I first got married we lived in some run down apartments. Our neighbors were dealers. The girl friend would come home high at all hours of the night and start banging on our door thinking that her man locked her out again. They stole the tires off my truck once, and tried breaking into my wife's car, but a patrol car came by and they ran off. The guy tried breaking in a couple times. But once he was stopped by our pup D.O.G, and the other stopped when he came face to face with me.
Both times he was arrested, both times he was lucky that he walked out of the house instead of being carried out (Castle Doctrine in NC says that you can use any force up to and including deadly force to stop a forced entry into your home. It also states that you can not be charged in a civil case for defending your home yourself or your family. We are also not a duty to retreat state 'in your castle that is'.), and both times he got out of jail on technicalities.
He died about a year ago, never heard how.
Moral of the story, carry and carry often.
