Kinda the same thing isn't it?
The Japanese culture is what is being attacked. If you want to change things in Japan, change the culture, don't sink ships, nor cut nets, or be a bother to the Japanese people. Make changes to the governing body that oversees these activities. Both the whales and dolphins have a governing body which dictates how many can be taken during the year. Make changes there.
That's all I've been saying.

The "culture" argument has been used over and over. There are many things that were a part of some peoples "culture" that are no longer done. Fox hunting...and Bull fighting in some parts of the world has been stopped. They were clearly part of the "culture". It's the biggest obstacle there is really. They believe that their "culture" is being attacked...and BG understands it, but sometimes people need to change their "culture" for the good of Mother Earth.(corny but true)
Don't you owe BG some money for our bet?:D
Please answer my question. Don't deflect my question with nonrelative comments. How would you as a US citizen respond the the above situation?

Clearly(BG loves saying that) those things are not "legal". Your sickness is so deep in your bones you don't get what BG is saying. You ask what Japan is doing that is illegal. BG's answer was "whaling". Now that can be argued BG agrees, but BG believes it is. However there is an argument from both sides...... BG will agree with you on that. Does this help you with your sickness at all?

I've heard you say it 1000 times, so please cite the laws they are violating.

In 1986 the IWC declared a moratorium on whaling. Japan is a member. Now since the IWC doesn't really have any "authority" to enforce it. It could be viewed that Japan doesn't have to abide by it. So whether or not they are "technically" breaking the "law" would need to be settled in court somewhere. Japan likes to say they say they are doing "scientific research". We both know that's crap Smitty. You can keep arguing this, but it's kinda useless. You think what you want...and BG will think what he wants. Can we at least agree to disagree?
Don't you have a home fire drill to do or something?:D

No warnings or anything, and here you are untouched after repeatedly calling everyone diseased with the BG sickness, making fun of wilomn's name. You are like a bully in junior high you makes up a "funny" nick name for someone and can't get in trouble because TECHNICALLY there's nothing wrong... Not breaking any rules.
Well BG does agree with you about one thing. This "horse" has been beaten to death so much there's nothing left.
How many times do the mods and everyone need to say this though? If you don't like what BG is saying. Don't read his threads. It might be different if someone else started the thread, but they didn't, BG did.
Give it a try....and say hi to Mikey for me.:D

There are 2 arguments here. First..the whaling is done in the Southern Ocean...not Japanese waters. The Dolphins however are in Japanese waters and it's not illegal to take them. Your argument is sound, and BG totally understands your point. It is difficult to go to another country and ask them to change, but it's something BG and many Japanese believe also. So BG is gonna try.

So you are now admitting that the SSC has in the past and presently are committing crimes against countries all over the world? From shooting at police, to bombing and sinking ships within costal waters where International law isn't in effect.

All except that pesky research clause. I believe it's Article VII of the IWC bylaws. In fact, it was a bylaw of the IWC predecssor.

But that's where we differ. You can think what you want, but I deal in facts. What Japan is doing is immoral, but it is not illegal, regardless of your "feelings".

I will politefully diagree. You can't expect any sentient being to read your comments and blindly believe them to be fact. If this is your actual expectation, I am worried about you. Please don't take this the wrong way, but you are not the final answer to any question. We as a community have a cetain degree of responsibilty to question anyone here that posts opinion as fact.

So why is your group attempting to prevent them from carrying out their rights that are covered within government laws? Why would a member of your group take a boat into the cove and cut the nets the fishermen were using? If in fact you believe what you are yourself stating above, why are you there trying to prevent them from fishing which is in fact (by your own words) legal?

But I don't beieve you are "asking" them to change their culture. Can you actually say that your group's activities would remotely be considered, in any culture, as "asking them to change"?
I await your response.

No, no you can't. Idc what point you are trying to make. If you are going to be in anyway shape or form credible you can't. IF and only IF you had any form of education and/or intelligence you would know this.
Your lack of intelligence is actually getting to be quite annoying. You have yet to say ANYTHING other than what you haven't said already numerous times already.
And I know BG your mommy told you, you were special and oh so smart. But guess what momma was only half right, your extremely "special".
And I FINALLY figured out who you remind me of.....you know the movie "The Ringer"? Well......you're JIMMY. Both of you refer to yourself in the 3rd person, both are full of yourselves and both are mentally handicap.
I'm sorry I shouldn't be making fun of you now, I just feel bad. But it's ok my big special man, it will be ok. Keep saving those "dolphins" in "Japan".

TIME OUT!
Golly, my "Motherness" can't let it go anymore.
Except for Jim Smith, all you anti-BG folks chill out!
Especially you, MitsuMike.
#1: BG is BG. That's THE WAY HE IS. Accept it or move on. We don't harp on you for having a big nose, stop harping on him for having a big head!
You know my sister sometimes irritate the crap out of me. But, I know that's just the way she is and there's really nothing I can do to change that. So, when we talk and she starts to irritate me, I take a big breath and weed out the message from the bullcrap. Because, the delivery might be stupid, but the message, usually, is not. So I can argue with her without resorting to petty insults!
#2: When BG puts on airs, we roll our eyes, laugh, or sigh in disgust... it's just part of being BG. When you spew insults like the post above, it just makes you sound stupid, because hey, that kind of bad-mouthing coming from a supposedly "better person" is not what we SEE YOU AS! You're better than that! Now, wilomn... that's the way he is. He can be acerbic but his posts are always literary genius. I just wish he would rise up to be the better man that he can be and leave the insults out of a thread that is dedicated to Steve Irwin. You can pick your BG battle on a "lighter" thread. There are some of us who take Steve Irwin and his causes very seriously.
Now, Jim Smith's posts... they're good... it's a serious rebuttal of BG's activities, not BG himself. It would be great if Robin would do his surgery again and take out the other ones that just whines about BG. But, Robin, I know you're going to sigh and say, Not again!
So, yeah, c'mon guys... we can be civil can't we?
Okay, PLAY.

My 2 cents on the cultural thing.
Jim, I'm kinda with BG on this one. For example, in the Philippines, the culture is such that you can't find a bird flying around outside of the thick forests. Why... because people shoot them on sight. When I was a little kid, my family would go visit the family farm in the mountains of Bohol (we live in the city, an entire day's trip from the farm) every summer. My brother would hike through acres of rice fields to get to the edge of the forest just to find a hawk. And when he sees one and talks excitedly about it, the local farmers would be quick to go to the edge of the forest the next day with their rifles.
It's cultural, you see. People are poor, especially in the farming town that they would shoot anything that has any potential of meat. Extinct or not. The smallest monkey - the Tarsier - is native to Bohol. Good luck finding them. They slipped into endangered species list because Filipinos take them for meat.
This culture needs to change and my family is fairly active in changing it. This is what my family is doing:
Nalusuan Island
My family is native to the town of Cordova. One of my uncles or cousins have been the mayor of that town since the early 70's. The Municipality of Cordova is very active in pursuing conservation efforts by empowering the population to choose responsible harvest practices. It is a mission that involves cultural change. If you look at the tab that says Vision-Mission-Goals, it outlines what we are trying to accomplish at Nalusuan. This is one of many efforts we are trying to accomplish to "change the culture" there.
Nalusuan is home to several species of fish, sea turtles, and birds, including the Philippine Eagle, most of which are on the endangered list. The hotel funds all these efforts. We partner with the Universities to do research etc, to provide sustainable livelihood to the local fishermen and hunters while educating them on conservation and responsible harvest. The message is simple: Just because you see a bird flying doesn't necessarily mean it needs to become a food source. We can farm birds to have a sustainable supply. And we will help you gain the skills to do so.
Okay, I do agree with you that there is a much better way to change Japanese culture than what the Sea Shepherd is doing. We have done it in Nalusuan. It is a success. But, a change in culture is necessary to save the Dolphins.
Little Factoid: Nalusuan means Land of the male genitalia. :D:D
