Snake Room Update

Got a brand new deep freezer for the snake room. 6.8 cubic feet, and currently has 60 lbs of jumbos, XL's, Larges, Mediums and Smalls.

Hope it has enough room for large rabbits too lol

Ya unfortunately a lot of people aren't fond of the idea because they have been told forever that snakes must have belly heat, a gradient, and flex watt lol.

I just look at the really big successful breeders that are making all the cool new, healthy snakes and figure if it's good for the goose it's good for the gander lol.

Edit: and that's not knocking people that use flexwatt or a gradient etc, because I've used it myself, and still do on quarantine outside of the temp controlled room, but whole room heating is simply much more efficient. Less equip. Less power, less stuff to potentially fail. If something happens to an enclosure I can throw anything anywhere in the room and it has the proper temp. It's especially handy when feeding breeding pairs. I throw one in a big tub, and feed both seperately, but both still have the right heat.

Its a really intriguing set up, and I can definitely see the appeal. Ive never tried it, so dont think im knocking you at all, but it makes me wonder a bit. It just seems wrong to me to not let a snake thermoregulate ya know? They are temperature dependant animals, and i would think that the ability to select a preferred body temperature is a major part of their natural behavior.

I know of plenty of breeders that do this, but in my opinion, their is more to keeping snakes then getting them to breed successfully.

Can you see what im getting at?

Well on the flip to that side of the arguement, I also provide bigger water bowls than most people do. To me it is an important feature. If the snakes can fully immerse themselves in their water, they can thermoregulate. The water IS the same temperature if not a degree or two colder, however when they come out, the natural cooling effect of evaporation lowers their temperature. Being that I keep the room at 87°, which isn't quite at the top of their accepted temperature range, they can achieve a lower temp than you would think by simply soaking.

To warm up more than the ambient temp of the cage, they do what most reptiles do, and find a warm surface to touch. I can tell when they are trying to get warmer(like if the door has been open on cleaning day and ambient has dropped a few degrees temporarily) when they are pressed up against the glass of their enclosures, which retains heat better than the air, and transmits heat better than the air itself.

So far, my theories on how and why it works seem to be correct, and everything seems to be as "happy" as a snake can be in captivity lol.
