    If they fail to ovulate. Female can lay underutilized eggs. No ovulation causes eggs to be resorbed.

    in the wild food isn't always easy for a ball python to obtain. when a female gets clues from the change in the seasons (temps, light) that it's breeding season. she will start follicle growth. if she doesn't mate with a male, instead of using all that energy to have infertile eggs, she will absorb her follicles and won't use all her stored fat for no reason.

    Stress can play a role in the re-absorption as well like weighing her every 3 days ;)
