I would definitely cook up some of the f/t small rats that I have in my freezer if no other source of food was available to me. I would put a ton of spices and ketchup on them, lol.

Oh, sure--why not? They eat rats in India. People eat squirrels here in the US--squirrels are, in fact, rodents.
They eat guinea pigs in South America. I imagine that capybara are pretty tasty, too. :) Heifer, International used to have guinea pigs on their available animal gifts list, though I don't see them there at the moment. A trio of cavvies can produce a lot of offspring, and guinea pigs are good eating.

I wouldn't eat an FT rat. It's been killed and frozen with all of its innards intact, and that doesn't seem safe. I would slaughter and properly clean a live rat, instead. I'll bet that with some rosemary and a bit of a wine sauce, it would be absolutely delicious. Or, you could cook up a bunch of them, debone them, and make a hearty stew with potatoes and veggies. I don't know what rat tastes like, but I don't imagine that it tastes bad--most meats from mammals taste just fine. Diet will probably make a difference in the flavor. I imagine rats eating lab block will taste a lot better than those eating dog food, and rats that are largely grain fed would have a good flavor as well.

Yes I'd eat a rodent if I was starving... Actually, I heard that gray squirrel is a delicacy!! That can't be too much different, no?

The meat in this country is mostly cow...pig...turkey...chicken. Yes there's a few others, but few and far between... why do you think that is? Even within the ruminants, what about goat or bison meat? (Actually, I've had bison burgers before and they are quite good.)

Truthfully, I would. I wouldn't hesitate either, although I'd want a fresh one, not F/T.

After all, people in other countries eat all kinds of things, not just rats but spiders and such. I would have to be on the verge of starvation to eat anything that lived on land and had more than four legs, but who knows?

Reminds me of an old Food Network commercial: Guy and his wife are on vacation in some remote jungle, native chief offers them something he calls Magpani worms. Hubby finally takes a bite and whispers to his wife, " Call me crazy but this tastes like chicken."

Then hubby and wife are in suburban backyard barbecuing for the natives who are apparently vacationing with them. Hubby offer the chief a piece of grilled chicken. Chief takes a bite and whispers to the native next to him, " Call me crazy but this tastes like magpani worms."

All a matter of perspective I guess.

Yes. I don't know why people think about it so much.

I cooked rat over a spit and fed it to some other guys and had one myself. When I told them "No, it's not exactly squirrel" they questioned me closer until I admitted it was rat. Then they threw up. I finished the other rat off, since they were no longer hungry.

Rat, squirrel, chicken.. whatever. It was all living at one point, and then it's dead, and it's edible.

Trying to remember everything I've ever tried... I really can't think of much that I haven't tried, except for primates(obviously), cetaceans(although my grandfather and mother both ate manatee at one time) and I won't eat poisonous creatures like fugu(the blowfish) because risking death or maiming just for the thrill of eating a meal seems stupid.

I regularly eat things off the floor, and twice now have tried to eat a bead I found on the floor of the shop, much to my boss's disgust and disbelief each time(two DIFFERENT bosses, at seperate times, both honest mistakes.. I thought the shiny spheres were candy!). What's an immune system for anyhow?

Oh.. and although cheesey crickets out of the box aren't bad at all, the sour cream and onion crickets are dry and taste spoiled to me. Both are very dry on the tongue though, fresh crickets are better, so don't bother buying the packaged kind. Make your own.
