I would keep one of the dimmers and get one thermostat. You were planning on getting the remptitemp 500r? You could try plugging the cool side into the dimmer and then plugging that into the thermostat. This will give you some individual control for the cool side allowing you to dim it down.

are you sure your tuning them down and not up :P people have made this mistake many times. because i use dimmers some times and on there lowest setting a heat pad should give off no heat. (lowest setting is in fact OFF)
Plug a lamp into it and test. make sure its not a fluorescent bulb as they dont dim and will blow.

Yes, the brighter the LED on the dimmer, the lower the heat pad. I also think you have it opposite. Don't worry, I did the same thing too until I plugged them into a light.

Be sure it's a thermostat and not a rheostat (which is essentially a dimmer). Thermostats will keep your temps at a consistent temperature, adjusting accordingly to room temp fluctuations.
Rheostats you will have to monitor and manually adjust throughout the day (and night) as the temperatures in the room change.
It seems like a bitter pill to swallow to spend $80 on a quality thermostat from someone like Reptile Basics, but given the lifespan of your snake, the longterm cost is pennies a day (not to mention, preventing burns on your snake, which would lead to veterinary expenses).
Re: Soon to be new owner.
3 more months quarantine for my RTB and 4 more for my tree boa then i can pu them in the same room and get a nice tstat to manage all 3 in one shot.
oh how i cannot wait for the day :)
Re: Soon to be new owner.
Haha thanks guys, It was backwards I feel so dumb. That darn LED indicator is backwards. brighter should be hotter! not the opposite. Anyways, I will consider the thermostat for the hot side and running a dimmer to the cold side to bring it down the 10 degree variance. That is an excellent idea! for now I am gonna use the two dimmers I have to see how well they work, My house doesnt change temperature much, it is usually chill at a crisp 75-80 degrees. if there is too much inconsistancy I will go for the thermostat sooner.
Now if my buddy would stop hiding in his rock!
how often do they come to play in the water? or just at least drink?
Re: Soon to be new owner.
They rarely come out. I only see mine out and about on feeding day. I have seen them drink on a few rare occasions. They are very secretive animals.
Re: Soon to be new owner.
I held him for the first time tonight about half an hour and he never uncurled. when do they start loosening up in your hands?

its going to be 2-4 weeks before he gets used yo you. my boy did the same thing. but now as soo as i lift his cave he sticks his head up and i grab him and he is all over me like a jungle gym now. and he is not head shy with me any more :P i have a few pics my girlfriend took on her blackberry of me ticking his chin lol
all you have to do is wait. he needs time to realize "hey my new home is fantastic, i eat regularly, and that big thing that grabs me and holds me isn't trying to eat me" :P
Re: Soon to be new owner.
Haha thanks for the laugh Jeff.. I will be patient :)
Re: Soon to be new owner.
So I forgot to add something, when I awoke this morning his little tree was on its side so I checked my friend and he has a section of scale missing on his neck about an 1" behind is head. just a top layer. he must have climbed it and got side heavy and knocked his boggin on something, im sure he will be ok, im just not sure how snakes heal?
oh and for all your support in this 7 page 'help traviz' thread. heres a final photo of his terrarium.
a night and day light, adjustable brightness. you can see the thermometers in each corner. hygrometer on the right, and hes happily in his rock cave right now.
