Now I think I know your type, Mellisa. Maybe you should go with a Green Rat Snake. They're enjoyable to handle and since they're arboreal snakes they climb on you like a tree (it's something I've experienced-it was a great). I'm pretty sure they do grow up to 5 feet, so they're significantly long too. Overall, IMO it sounds like your type of snake.

My vote: Corn snake, Mexican black milk, or cal king.
All gorgeous and can be awesome snakes.:gj:
This is my butter corn. She's almost 2 years and super sweet.

That's a holding cage for when hers is getting cleaned.

Hey no prob. On Tai, no he is never a snuggle type and most Asian rats are not. He is not too hard to deal with but always going is the way it is.
Did not see the thread, if you point it out I am happy to answer it. Sounds cool though,

The Madagascar Cat Eye is so docile as not to matter. Even the two bites I could find were no worse then a bee sting and both were from Japanese researchers that were tying a string to the snakes tails. One one day, one the next, I guess they did not learn from incident one.
Neil Ford told me he was bit once while probing one for sexing and got no reaction at all.

Re: Best First Colubrid - Suggestions Please!
Both of my gopher snakes are very laid back. The only time I get a bit of a hissing is when I'm feeding my san diego. I have an excess of smaller prey items, and he'll hiss a little bit during feeding. At that point he's already got one in his mouth and I've dropped the second one in the tank (f/t).
Gophers, Bulls, pines can all be calm snakes and still give you a bit of display action now and then. They also tend to be diurnal snakes, so you may see more of them during the day.

Honduran milk...? Already 6'.

I'm looking into it. I know - a lot of balls in the air at once! But I love it.
If I get this guy, I still want a cribo and black rat one day (I feel the need to have at least one locally indigenous snake)!!

Of course, if you want the critter cage, etc. that comes with him, that makes it a better deal, but I think I remember you talking about having your snakes in tubs?

Re: Best First Colubrid - Suggestions Please!
Yes, the ad was funny! I already mentioned that I didn't think I could swing the $100. She seemed like she would work with me on that, so we'll see. Since he's diurnal, a tank is OK. He'll be a display snake.
I'll keep you posted.

Re: Best First Colubrid - Suggestions Please!
The Honduran Milk lady never emailed me back. So I think someone else was willing to pay her fee. Guess it's just not meant to be. I'm working on a bird right now anyway. And I found out today that chincilla's give me hives! :O

How about a Giant Madagascan Hognose? They can get 7 to 9 ft and have that great Hoggie personality.

It's leucistic Texas ratsnakes for me all the way......pure white snake with icy blue-gray eyes, and a bright red tongue. Super cool. Second choice is the noodle baby..;) The are gorgeous snakes. I named mine Petunia. :D

Re: Best First Colubrid - Suggestions Please!
Nope, I still say it's corns corns corns! :) So many morphs, so little time (or space).
And that is a huge bummer on the chinchillas! That is the one mammal I fully intend to have someday soon!
(Oh, and Casey...I hate you for getting a gold AND a silver dragon!! :D;))

Hi,
I've always thought they had the most beautiful eyes - very elegant ladylike snakes.
Possibly not the thoughts you were looking for but I stand by em. :P
