Re: Speaking "Southern"
I tried to make okra once. It was some sort of pre-breaded, frozen okra and well...it was mushy and gross. I'm pretty sure how it's made in the south must be better than that. Of course, this is from a person that uses whomp um biscuits (you know the tube ones) and sausage gravy out of a can LOL.
*Disclaimer - I have since learned to make my own sausage gravy since the canned stuff was disgusting, however, I still can't bake a decent biscuit to save my eternal soul. If the mention of biscuits from a tube and canned gravy has made any of our southern born members scream in agony, faint, throw up or swear to hunt me down....well...ummm...sorry about that folks!*

Re: Speaking "Southern"
Well, I called my Grandma..Granma. Everybody called my Grandpa, Poppy or Pop. But I couldn't say Poppy so until I was about 4 he was Peepop. lol... :P
My step father is from West Virginia and he called his Mom and dad, Mammy and Pappy.
My kids call their Gradfather Papaw. They used to call my Mom, Mamaw but about a few years ago they started calling her Granma.

Fried okra is the bomb! If I don't feel like cooking it, I run to Church's Chicken and just pick some up. All fried okra is not equal, the breading has to be crisp. Frozen okra - well, I don't do frozen fried okra.
And I love okra in my beef stew. And pickled okra? Oh my - Santa always leaves me my own jar in my stocking each year!
I don't make my own biscuits either, Joanna - 'tis ok. Best store bought gravy is from the powdered starter, IMHO. Of course, gravy naturally leads you to chicken fried steak smothered in it!
My father's parents we called Mother Sunny and Granddaddy. My mom's parents we called Moe and Poe (Moe is my only surviving grandparent now, she's 96 years old and still has a brilliant mind!)

Well I googled scrapple and much to my surprise it's basically just like scottish haggis. It uses cornmeal instead of oatmeal and I suppose it's spiced a bit different but heck I grew up on haggis so I bet scrapple would suit me just as well. :)
You know considering I also grew up on black puddin' (aka blood pudding) it's rather odd of me to go yewww at some of your southern dishes. I guess it's all what you're used to. Ohhhhhh now I have such a craving for fried black puddin' and tattie scones *drool* Derek where are you man!

Oh my GAWD....:D
Jo I hope I didn't get you started on this (pronounces like hiss with out the H)
I was born and raised in Mississippi been here my whole life (pronouced Lie-f) and from what I been told I am "country" soundin'
Speaking southern (pronouced suth-in)ain't hard it all. It just takes kowning (pronounced no-in) what letters get (pronounce git) drawn (pronounce dr-ah-n) out you (pronounced ya)see. An imitation or bad fake southern accent comes off sounding like Fog Horn Leg Horn. Which is not how I sound...(I hope).
- Grits are Great.. no suger damin it they ain't cookies.
- Corn Bread is to be broken up and soaked in a cold glass of milk and eaten with a spoon.
- Butter milk can be drank. :D
- Babys look best in "Mossy Oak Break Up" jumpers.
- Girls that drive trucks are Hawt.
- Chiggers. :D nuff said.
- anything that ends in "ing" the g get dropped
Any body needing clarification can call me :D

I've heard Larry the Cable Guy and Elvis. LOL
Chiggers are this little bug the burrows in to your skin and like a tick does it thing. The difference is that you don't get just one you get like 30-50 of them. They like areas where cloths touch all the time like waist bands socks and underwear :taz:.. The bite area itches worse than fleas, gnats, or any thing I have ever felt..
Welcome to the south. :D
