Depending on the BP, I've had to stick the nose into the hide and just wait for the jump scare. Some are totally fine with me lifting off the hide and poking the prey's nose right in their face or touching noses, and they'll strike. Sometimes the confident ones will come out of their hide right away if the tub gets opened and they smell food, and they'll nail it. Sometimes leaving the prey's nose at the hide entrance and just leaving them alone for an hour does the trick- when I check back, the prey is eaten.
All of my snakes eat differently. A good portion take the rodent right from tongs. My woma requires the rat to be left at the door of his cave with just the snout poking in. Jungle corn likes his rat cold, left on a log hide. You have to experiment to find what works.

Coincidentally my BP's name is Pit. He does tend to recognize there is food though so he's not completely inept.
Update: He finally took one of the medium size rats I ordered like 25 of, which is great cause he is still a bit small but ready for this size food, very exciting development!

Great! One other thing I could think of to make my Pollux like that is the breeder has several kids and other pets and he lets the kids interact with the snakes under supervision. Maybe Pollux learned to be so cautious b/c of that, since he's not scared of the prey he just takes forever to strike unless I give him the tap, then he's RIGHT on it.
