"Ideal snake" is subjective. Some people like snakes because of the variety of morphs to create neat looking variations. Some like exotic snakes that are nice to look at, but not to touch. Dumerils have no cool morphs and hide a lot, so you can't see them.

But like you, I like Dums for the qualities you mentioned. They make a nice pet snake that is not skittish, doesn't mind being handled and has nice size. I happen to think they're beautiful too.

These are old pics, which is why I haven't posted them. I'll post some new ones next time I take him/her out (I thought he was male, but recently I looked and couldn't find any spurs, so now I'm not sure). In any case he's 7 months old and about 180g.

I think they're relatively popular, for a more "exotic" snake. You could join the "Dumeril's boa lovers" group on facebook- everyone there has a dum or two!

I did that and have been in contact with a number of breeders, nice to see all of them. Also found some through fauna at pet Kingdom in Ca, they are sending me pics today or Monday.

It's been forever since I've said hello or even logged in on the forums! Let's see if I remember how to post a picture...

Myself and my little sweetheart, David Bowie! SHE is about 10 years old now, slightly bigger than in these photos. 22lbs give or take, and I think 7ft when I last checked. Such a puppy dog, Dumeril's are the prettiest snakes there are!

I'm currently looking to purchase a dumeril. Do they need to be kept on aspen or cypress?? My other setups all have the uline indented kraft paper which I prefer for cleanliness but need to know about Dumerils.

Any advice.

I keep mine on coco, but others use aspen, cypress or newspaper. They enjoy burrowing which is why I prefer the coco. If on paper you'll just want to make sure you provide hides. I think bcr has said she gives hers a towel to burrow under.
