He should be able to smell the rat when it goes in the tank. You can wait until night time, bring the rat in the room and put it near the tank, or in the tank in a box until he peeks his head out. Then open the box.

Is night time a better feeding time? What if he is out and about already, is it till okay to put the mouse in there?

It'll be a live rat so I hope he will see it lol. Just didn't know if it was okay to drop a live rat in there if he was out and about moving around. Looking forward to feeding time!

That's the best time to feed. When he's vigilant. Just watch and make sure the rat doesn't attack him.
