Eh. I believe it's possible to make smart investments and make money in the industry. You would have to dig really deep into your pockets, and have some solid females to start with.. I recommend first picking up several powerful females and raising them up. Later on down the line, if you're still interested, you'll have big girls ready to breed. If not, well then those powerful females will have gone up in price, since they're quite large :gj:.
When you decide you really want to breed, I think you're going to need to dig even deeper into your pockets.. Way deeper than $3000... Find a good looking, high-potential single gene male to invest a lot of money in, and make combos. Supply the higher end market with combos of this rare morph, as well as lower end combos. I could be completely wrong, since I'm not a "large bp breeder". But this seems to make sense. Most of the big breeders have some really high end stock. They invest hundreds of thousands of dollars into producing the next big thing. Not so much the 7 gene animals, but the rare 2-gene combos that look awesome. Those combos also help push the popularity of a single gene.
What was told to me was go big or go home. I'm not trying to start a huge business. That's not my goal. I just want to have baby ball pythons all the time. LOL. I want to be able to afford it. EVERYONE wants extra money, and if this hobby does make me some profit, well who the hell am I to argue??? LOL. Obviously I haven't made any money because I keep buying snakes, but I'm having a ton of fun taking pictures, talking about morphs, and raising snakes that look hot when they age.

i couldnt agree more. I have a few nice females that ive been raising! I would like to think most of us dont want a huge business, but i think its fair to assume we'd all like a self sustaining hobby. also by larger i just meant people who have been in this industry a long time

I forgot to mention, I agree with 50% of this comment. Don't put all your money into OD right NOW. As Rabernet stated, by the time you raise any of the females that you want, something else WILL be new and hot, and breeding OD to a bunch of females would not be a smart investment... In 2 years, you'll probably be able to afford a triple OD combo male... At the very least, a double...

im not even really interested in OD's ... just a scenario. For some reason chocolate combos get me giggly so that's what i'm going to be going for as well as trying to get my grubby little paws on a GHI

Right! If it were an option for me, I'd more than happy do it, as long as it's enjoyable. I have my own plans, and if those make me money, SWEET! If they make me even, I will still refuse to change my plans. I could sell all my snakes right now and buy a GHI male and maybe a few breedable combo females. That just isn't fun for ME. I don't have the luxury of already owning several powerhouse females haha :P.
I thought you were specifically interested in OD, but I think you have the right mindset. Several powerful females + single gene male that is up and coming. OD is a great one, and so is GHI. HGW is another. All of these are hot, they make sweet combos, and they're worth a pretty penny on their own.

If you go with the orange dream project, buy two and start going for supers and super combos. I didn't really start believing in the OD projects until the supers came out.
Trick is visually pretty cool, but the entry fee still seems very steep. I'm worried they'll drop in price very suddenly. On the bright side, cool means people will buy them.

A lot of people think if they make it, they will come. They post on fauna or Kingsnake and just sit back and watch the money roll in. The other thing is that you have to make stuff that people want, not what you want. If you look at what is hot, and can get it out in the next year or 2 then you can make money. I was having a discussion with a dude that said he didn't make money on Bps. He only produces single gene bps and tries to sell them for adult bp prices.

yes you can make more $ with hot genes, but that would defeat the purpose of breeding cause until im trying to make a living im going to do what i like or else it isn't fun!

You should do what you enjoy. My point was only that some people set out to make money, but don't because they only breed what they like, instead of what the consumer wants. It is like any other business, you have to give the consumer what they want, or they find it somewhere else.
Create what you love and have fun with it. At the same time, realize you could technically do both. Breed what you want for your own collection, and sell what keeps your collection supplied or what can make some extra ends. Part of the fun of breeding is being able to create your own morphs instead of buying from someone else. You become your own distributor & supplier.
Either way, good luck!
