Yes it should not feel hot but verifying with a digital thermometer or temp gun is the proper way to go about it.

if i click the temp gun one time it will read 94, then 95, then 94, then 96, then 94, then 95, is my temp fluctuating like crazy or is this just the temp gun?

Make sure you're holding the temp gun close enough. They have a ratio depending on the model you buy. The temp gun is also reading surface temps so they can vary a bit depending where in the tub you're checking.

If you're using paper as a substrate make sure there is a hide or something in there holding it down when you're measuring temps. I personally keep my hot spot in the 90-92 range. There is nothing wrong with 94 but if it consistently hits 96 it might be a tad too hot.

In my new rack I am going to have extra tubs so I amthinking about just putting the probe in that tub with the same amount of substrate and set it to 94*. That way I don't have to do the trial and error of seeing how much heat is lost between the heat tape and the enclosure or risk the probe getting displaced.

is it ok for a adult bp in a 41q tub that i have one strip of 3"heat tape in the hot side? Can the bp have the 3" tape run down the middle of its body, and that will heat all of it?
