Can i do this!!??
Thinking about getting a second bp...my first is an adult male. Can I house more than one bp in the same tank?? Does it have to be another male? Is it recommend? Any advice, thanks in advance!
-
Do not house two snake in one enclosure together for an extended period of time outside of breeding season. Absolutely no one recommends it.

Ok thanks I didn't think I could but wanted to make sure....but just curious why not? I thought in the wild sometimes they share rabbit holes together! Haha

Oh boy, here we go. Lol, I'm getting some popcorn.
Personally, I never would.

I would think if they were the same size it couldn't hurt.. But I could see a dominating problem as far as hides and stuff.. Feeding would obviously have to be done outside their enclosures
-
Re: Can i do this!!??
I didn't know there would be a dominating issue, but common sense tells me the feeding would be have seperate...I think its weird bps can't be housed together but bigger snakes like red tails wrap around each other 3 or 4 at a time!
-
You can, but those who can't will hate you and berate you.
-
I'll make this quick with a Pros/Cons list.
Cons
-You now have to pay twice the vet bills if one of the snakes gets sick.
-You can't monitor any deification. If you find that there's some runny poop in the tank, how do you know which snake produced it?
-It just stresses them out because they are solitary critters by nature.
-Competition for resources. You'll often see BPs that are housed together laying on top of one another to get at the hot spot.
-Two males will fight with one another. Doesn't look very fun for the snakes, does it?
-Unintentional pregnancies if you have a male and a female together.
-And the worst, cannibalism. Which mind you, has no warning signs. The only warning you get is when you go to look in on their tank one day and you wonder where your other snake went.
Pros
-Well at least I have two snakes together in one tank and that looks really cool. I am so cool. I am just the coolest person ever.
It's just not a smart thing to do and there is literally no benefit outside of a keeper getting their own ego stroked so just don't do it.

Yes, listen to the experts, those who have tried and failed, or not even bothered to try but know someone who couldn't do it. Pay close attention to those who know how to cruise the internet and regurgitate bullsnot posted by others who can't. NEVER try it yourself and don't EVER do anything that those who can't would frown upon should you be so brave and daring as to try.
kyte, you ever try it yourself or just one of those guys who just likes to puke what he's been spoonfed?

I appreciate the advice and insight...i apologize if its me or do you have some kind of failed history behind this attempt? It just seems like you have some kind of real dislike for someone who has tried and done it successfully. No disrespect to you in anyway Im just curious!

Wilomn, if you can give me one benefit of permanently housing two Ball Pythons together, I will gladly listen.

Well, namely there's just so many cons that come out of it over pros. If there was one good thing, I would gladly include it but the fact of the matter is, there are not. Plain and simple.
This really isn't speaking from personal experience however, the things I listed are just facts. They are things that can happen when you keep two snakes together, maybe not right away but a problem will eventually arise where as most of those issues can be moderated much more efficiently or completely avoided with solitary housing. And I'm not saying don't buy another snake but plain and simple, there's no logical reason to house them together.
And if I sound snotty sorry, but I just see this issue come up so frequently, it's obnoxious.

Honestly never really thought about half the stuff u listed.. Never planned on trying it either but I do see it at prtsmart all the time..
Mayne that should b the first clue not to do it

Petsmart is hardly the poster child for proper reptile husbandry.

Got it. You don't know squat about it, haven't ever done it, won't ever do it, but feel fine telling any and all that it's the pathway to hell if they do it.
It's guys like you that make people in this hobby think we're all chest thumping idiots who jump on bandwagons the way smart people do research.
One good reason, here ya go smart guy.
I LIKE it. Here's another. It DOES look cool. And just for fun, here's another, because I don't allow those who can't to tell me that I'm no better than they are.
Maybe you should go fly one, ya know?

Well, thank you for insulting my intelligence and I can see that we probably won't agree on whatever either one of us has to say so let's just leave it at that and I've said my piece anyway so I'm pretty much done here.
But OP asked for an answer and they got mine and it's ultimately up to them. :/
-
Its silly to think that any of those scenarios are absolutely going to happen if you house the snakes together. Nothing might ever go wrong. No one can say for sure.
Personally, I house my animals in separate enclosures because I believe they prefer being alone. There really aren't any benefits to the animals health or overall well being that are convincing enough to house these animals together. They just like being alone.
Can you house them together? Sure you can. But just be aware that there are some negative consequences associated with housing together. Ask yourself "why am I housing them together? How does this enrich their lives?"
If you do, I would only ever permanently house females together, as two sexually mature males will combat. Having a male and a female together could create an unplanned clutch of eggs that you and the female snake might not be prepared for.

Re: Can i do this!!??
Everything you guys are saying makes sense and I agree I constantly see petsmart or petco doing things completely wrong. The reason I even started this thread is becausei have seen it done but only once. Well I take the more than once because pets shops do it all the time...I'm really not convinced either way yet honestly, and I don't think I ever will try it...great debate peeps, thnx!

Instead of sitting around being rude to each other since you obviously have some odd internet e-peen battle going on in a thread kindly asking people for advice and help....why don't ya'll actually provide advice and keep the personal attacks/trolling to a minimum?
As for my personal advice....1 snake getting sick and infecting the other is enough of a possibility that housing BPs together is never going to happen for me personally...

How many people, properly keeping them have EVER had one snake get sick when they have many kept in solo setups? This if one gets sick nonsense is just that NON sense.
Done right, it's not a problem.
In regards to your last sentence, who asked you? It's ok for you to give the advice you deem appropriate and on subjects you feel strongly about, yet you don't feel others deserve the same because ... YOUR opinion on delivery is other than that of those doing the giving?
Perhaps mr. kyte has a spare for you.

There is a pet store local to me called "King ed pets" they keep about 10 ball pythons in a very terrible looking aquarium, its very painful to see! No hides either just a bunch of balls squished into the tightest place they can find. :(
Its just wrong to do, especially when you get something like this, one snake eating another, both die because of it.
Warning slightly graphic!

i can't wait until i'm old. i'm gonna crawl wayyy up on that exact. same. horse. be grumpy, and make sure i let everyone younger know how inferior they are to me. it just seems like it'll be so much fun. still got a few years to go though. ;)
as to the OP, from my minuscule amount of knowledge on ball python husbandry, i personally wouldn't. from watching my snakes, if the temperature and humidity are comfortable for them, they really seem to be happy when they're all curled up and hiding by themselves, so i think i'll stick to what i know works.

Top-notch attitude, bucko!
Oh, and that's a very good reason you provided ... for someone who puts their ego and "wants" ahead of their pets' "needs."
Let's try to give some actual insight to the newbs like me, instead of showing them how tall your horse has grown these days.

Your comprehension seems to be confused with humor and sarcasm. When you learn to use them properly, let me know and I'll give you some clues that you missed.
And where, ohIlovetojumptoincorrectonclusions, did you see me say that my snakes are not in any way healthy and as happy as they can be? Are you now making ASSumptions? It certainly seems to my tired old eyes that you are and while I don't feel like an ass, you may want to check yourself for extra sphincters.
-
Can i do this!!??
I wouldn't house two together. Can it be done? Sure, but there are risks involved. With the amount of money we spend on these animals the risk isn't worth the reward to me.

Ok, so a smart, inquisitive newbie (the OP) came here to do research. And who was the chest-thumper again?
I think we ALL get your point, dude. It can be done successfully. We are all just waiting for you to provide some actual PRO's (the "insight" I was referring to) as to why someone should attempt it. The only ones you've provided so far were the ones I quoted - "I like it" and "It DOES look cool" and "I don't let others tell me how to think."
But you're right about one thing, I did find an extra sphincter when I went checking myself. I am a total a** for being so new and posting in a topic about cohabiting when I only own one snake. I'm such a noob even, I mistakenly thought my horse was as tall as yours. Oops. I've since fallen off, and it feels much better down here.
Can we see some pictures of your cohabiting snakes, so that we can look for signs of what a happy, socialized, cohabiting snake might look like?
-
Don't house hem together. I've tried and it is a horrible idea. Two of my males were in the same enclosure, it seemed like they were getting along just find. They started dominating each other all day every day. Eventually they fought. It really could have been a lot worse had i not been there to unwrap them from each other.

Nope. You see, while I do understand your need for others to acknowledge you and your accomplishments, I don't have it, that need. You can believe or not as you will without further input from me. If you think I speak untruly, well, you won't be the first and it's doubtful you'll be the last but I promise you, I won't miss a wink of sleep over it. Harsh, maybe, but you all get soooo militant soooo fast that part of the time, hence my earlier reference to both sarcasm and humor, I just push your buttons. Because I can.
You also seem to have missed the point, entirely, that I have never ever said anyone should, just that you could, and have used my own experiences as an example. Whether or not you believe means nothing to me or my snakes.
My horse may be tall, but that's because I have a large ego that in no way relies on any of you to keep it inflated. (there ya go smart guys, an opening if ever there was one)
Do what you want, ask all you want, but don't be doing just because everyone else does, especially if those doing the saying have NO experience.
-
Yes, as wilomn so conscientiously pointed out, it can be done. However, if you're just starting out, it may be easier to keep them separate and avoid any of the issues that others have mentioned. It doesn't personally interest me to try it out, but I'm sure it could work for you if you bought one of similar size to the one you already have and did a very lengthy quarantine before introducing them.

Careful, well thought out statements like this, good statements, are likely to be misunderstood by some of the posters in this thread. Unless of course they have completely fooled me into thinking that their comprehension skills and attention to detail are less than stellar.

I'm glad you're able to take it all with a grain of salt instead of running for the hills. Sometimes people say things online in ways they wouldn't in person, because they forget that text doesn't convey inflection well. As far as your original question goes, you can keep them together, and some people do, especially for the short term (moving house, hurricane evacuation, etc.). Is there any actual benefit to the animal? No. They aren't herd animals like horses or dogs, they don't need company. Maybe they'll be ok together, some are. But maybe they won't be. It's up to you to decide whether or not you want to risk that, for me that risk is too high, and there's no tangible benefit other than not having to buy more enclosures. When I consider the cost of the animal itself, the cost of feeding and maintaining it, plus the emotional investment, versus the cost of another tank or rack, I just buy the tank or rank because that comes out a lot cheaper than the other things.
-
Can i do this!!??
I can both sides of this topic.
Most of the "con" list can be applied to almost any animal but people still keep other animals together. Take dogs for example. (We all know dogs are pack animals) Vet bills can/will be higher, if one gets sick the other one can too, you can't keep an eye on their waste as easy, they can attack and kill each other etc.
As far as stress levels, can anyone show research on this or have you just read it online? I would like to see real results. We as a community need more real facts and less online talk.
I would think in the wild they would and could be found in the same areas. For nothing more than food source alone would bring them to the same spot.
I don't think any of them would be found in a plastic tub or glass tank.
I have read papers on Rat Snakes using and being found in the same dens as Rattle Snakes or Copper Heads.
Using money or the cost of the snake should be thrown out too. No one on here should treat a free snake any different than a $1000 snake. You should respect each animal the same.
For the record, I keep mine alone.
-
Kind of late on this but I figured I would post since I do have some experience in this area.

You can do whatever you want; as Wilo so kindly put it. It helps to provide a little more background to you question and people will be able to provide better insight when answering a question.(i.e. I have a tank this big and have this much experience with snakes etc.....) I took the liberty of looking at your past posts to get some background, I would strongly advise against keeping two ball pythons together if you are relatively new to keeping in order to get a handle on the basic care of one snake, at the very least.
Quote:
Does it have to be another male? Is it recommended? Any advice, thanks in advance!
No, you don't want another male since you already have one they will likely fight/battle as most males of any species do when stuck together for a prolonged period; mine did, and while it was not anything more than harmless wrestling there is always a winner. This means there is a dominant male who in the wild gets breeding rights the loser takes off with his pride hurt until the next chance he gets, only this time he has nowhere to run and will likely become stressed out leading to not eating possible decline in health etc.....
Male and a female, better? Do you plan on breeding? My male and female were kept together from a young age and the opposite happened to me, years later(3) they would not breed or show any interest (he bred my other females though)
Female and Female, If you house any 2 snakes together you need to feed them in a separate container I don't care what anyone tells you, this is a MUST; but the feeding in a separate container is a whole other can of worms. I had a female attack my other female when I placed her back in the enclosure after feeding (they were both fed that day) luckily she let go and I was a little uneasy about placing another snake in with her from then on. fast forward man years later I was feeding some hatchlings in a tub outside of their own, one had started to eat it’s mouse I fed it and being impatient I figure I would feed another hatchling in the same tub to speed things up, as I am dangling a mouse for it he decides he wants to eat the mouse the other snake is already eating; I was able to get him off after a little struggle but lesson learned.
In my experience there is no real benefit to housing 2 snakes together other than your personal enjoyment, the snakes can really care less and some flat out do not enjoy the company of other BPs other then breeding season. It is true that there are some snakes that share a den in the wild but they are in brumation and are not exactly doing a whole lot of eating or moving for that matter, ball pythons do not brumate. I have yet to see a picture or heard of a ball python sharing a termite mound in the wild, I now only keep my animals solo.
-
Re: Can i do this!!??
I house my snakes separately. They may be found together in the wild as mentioned previously, but naturally they are solitary animals. I feel that stress levels could be raised though the natural inclination toward competition for resources but as mentioned previously I have no scientific proof to back that up (i will look though).
I think the biggest issue for me is that I would be unable to tell if one snake was sick.
P.S in almost all cases of cannibalism both snakes die.

As much as I can not stand wilomn's ridiculous attitude, I feel the need to add some information regarding the issue of predation between two ball pythons being housed together. The only reports of this I have ever come across outline issues with hatchlings being eaten by one another and it isn't something that happens (or at least documented) with enough regularity for people to be constantly worried about it.
That aside,
I do not advocate cohabitation with ball pythons, but if I were to try it I would use females only, of at least 350g in size. This avoids issues with premature copulation and male sparring. At 350g in size they should not longer be interested in consuming one another, so that would rule out predation.
I don't really see a point to cohabitation beyond only having one setup for multiple animals. I personally keep all my snakes separate unless breeding them; It makes sense to keep them apart for many reasons (keeping records, preventing spread of illness, preventing issues with unwanted breeding, preventing issues with male sparring). I am also someone who likes to quarantine new animals and have saved myself from a lot of issues because of this practice. I like to remove as much chance from my herp keeping as possible and allow for as much control over the state of my collection as I can. I find it easier to manage them this way.
wilomn,
I find your approach to be really silly. You are trying to make a valid point(s) but your attitude and presentation is such that you are not doing so effectively. If you want to sway the minds of others, try providing the same proof you expect them to provide you with. Your time spent in the hobby doesn't make your methods right (even if they work for you). If you want others to explore the methods you have found success in over the years, you are going to have to be open and willing to share your experience in detail with the community. We could all be losing out because you are unwilling to put some effort in your posts. On the other hand, you could simply be a pompus jerk who thinks he knows it all and is even more stubborn than all those folks who provide reasons and explination as to why they don't see eye to eye with him. I mean, you leave a lot of room to assume.
Do yourself and the community a favor and explain your methods, show us some photos of how you accomplished this successfully, and stop shaking a stick from your porch.

You have, intentionally or otherwise, misunderstood. What you do or do not do is fine. But, when someone says flat out that I, or you, CANNOT do something, I occasionally feel the urge to respond. My response is complete.
I leave a lot of room to jump off cliffs for those so inclined. Much like ASSuming, you are free to jump if you so choose, in fact, in your case, I'd recommend it, but then, it IS the only recommendation I've made in this thread so you should probably not go jumping off any enticing cliffs. My intent was never to sway anyone to anything. I'm just not real fond of absolutes that are untrue nor those who promulgate them through stupidity and ignorance.
Now, get off my porch before I release the hounds.

Come on let's be honest. We all read your posts, we all know you enjoy shaking trees to see how many nuts will fall down.;) Personally most of the time I find it entertaining to read.

Hell, even I enjoy it!
Just a shame that he won't fill the blanks for those of us who would actually like to know more about his practices and how they work. My post was in hopes to entice him into giving out some information that we can all use to think on.
