Meet the Screwball
Heres the story on this animal. I got an imported gravid female back in 2006. She laid 7 eggs and when it was time to cut eggs i was on egg number 4 and after 3 normals i was like what is this. All i saw was a white and yellow looking sheen with pattern. As i cut a little bigger this animal was weird lookin. I put the egg back and cut the rest. All normals the rest they way. So i went back to this funny lookin guy and wanted so bad to yank it out but i let them be. About 5 days later i woke up to 3 out of the egg and this little thing half way out. Then about 12 hrs later he was out. I was amazed by what he looked like. He kinda looked like a super pastel but he had that white look to him like bumblebees have when they hatch. Fast forward 6 months. He was really showing signs at this point of a weird looking pastel. I had a couple other breeders who had followed his story offering me crazy money for him but i knew i had to hold on to him. Fast forward to fall of 2009 i cycled him through 4 normal girls and after a failed attempt in breeding the year before i was sure he would breed. nothing took. So last fall i put him with one girl and kept him with her and finally he bred. April 15th of this year i had 5 eggs to cut from him. First egg normal, second egg normal, third egg a weird looking pastel looking thing similar to what he was as a baby, 4 th egg normal, then jackpot, egg number 5 had an animal i have never seen. It hardly had any pattern to it. But it had the wied yellows in it like he has. If you can imagine a sterling that is yellow thats what it looked like kinda like a fader thing going on i dont know. So the animals come out of the eggs and this weird baby isnt doing good. Had good size but very lathargic. I called my vet who buys rodents from me and he said he would come over the next day. Well it didnt make it through the night. I was so friggin dumbstruck and just destroyed. So now is the time to try it again and this time im going big. Im putting him to 4 girls. A 3500 gram normal, a 2400 gram pastel, a 1800 gram spider and a 2000 gram yellowbelly. Since i am convinced he is something special i am going all out with him to try and see what his deal is. So he has been coined the screwball and i hope to make a mark with him. Sorry for the long story but i am so emotionally invested in him. Here he is

Handsome boy. Looks like a lot like a pastel. Belly shot? Can you post pics of the baby?
-
Re: Meet the Screwball
Do you have any more pictures? Any pictures of the baby that died? From what you have shown so far it looks like a normal pastel that has just darkened in some spots more then others... Which is pretty common.
-
Re: Meet the Screwball
Its most certain a pastel of some sort but theres something else going on with it. And the fact it was produced from an import. And it wasnt an import from captive breeding it was a true bush grabbed gravid female so worst case scenario its a fresh line pastel. And no way id post a pic of the baby until know whats going on with the animal. Ive been in the game along time and have seen what happens when a pic gets out and people start runnin to conclusions. Dont know if you remember but a while back in 2002 and the ruppel pastel thing blew up all over the net or recentlly the chatter about the flatline. Im NOT in any way claiming genetic or anything else. Im just posting the story behind the animal posted. I hope ya understand i just dont want to be that guy that starts calling genetics before its proven thats all. Too many people have done that in the past with dinkers. And this may be just that but my experience tells me theres more to the puzzle
-
Not to be a douche but you let the cat out of the bag, you might as well not say anything at all if you won't post anymore info or pictures.
-
Re: Meet the Screwball
It just looks like a reduced pattern pastel to me. Nice snake though and a new line would be nice.
-
Re: Meet the Screwball
I posted all the info on the animal. Why would i post a picture of a one of a kind baby so somebody else can run with it and say they produced it? This has happened in the past. Im not gonna stir that pot till i know what im dealing with if anything at all. I still have the baby vacumm sealed in the freezer.
-
^ Watermarks on your pictures.
-
What about him as a baby or the baby that looked like him, not the frozen one. Who cares if someone stupid says they produced it, they don't have a specimen to back it up. Am I missing something?
The whole thing with the Flatline is only going to help Ralph garner even more interest about it, no?
Since when is publicity a bad thing for a snake breeder?
Not trying to be a penis, I am actually wondering what the benefit of trying to keep it a secret would be.
-
Could just be a new line but the most you can do is try to prove him out yea?
-
Actually, the snake pictured looks like a really good example of a blonde pastel. I had one that looked a lot like that which had been produced by Will Slough. (he was known for having a very nice line of blondes with true blonde color)
As for the lighter baby you speak of, I'd put that male back to the same female he produced it with last year. If it's a hidden gene or something recessive, you may not get another one from a different female.
Since you know he's a viable breeder now, try putting him with a couple different girls again this year but id definitely put him back to the same girl as before.

How do you know this? Not trying to be difficult but there is plenty of captive breeding going on over there, and there has been for a long time. Did you pull it from the bush yourself?

So you think someone is going to steal a picture of a dead baby?! A simple watermark on the picture should settle your fears on that.

Sorry, I guess I misunderstood. The "meet the screwball" title and the statement above suggested to me that you were introducing some kind of new morph.
-
Well i figured id get trplies from the conspiracy theroists out there and thats fine. I have my own reasons for not wanting to share pics of the baby. But yea hes going back to the same normal girl. Again i am convinced hes a pastel of some sort but just cause he looks one way doesnt mean something else isnt going on. There are alot of crazy things going on with subtle morphs and hidden genes out there. And we keep stumbling upon weird things. Prime example , yellowbellies and what they do, het reds, etc. 10 years ago with the yellowbelly and the quest for the white snake and now you can produce a white snake a number of different ways. Does anyone remember what the first lucies were selling for? I do and it was nuts.

No offense, but it sounds like you're the conspiracy theorist...worrying about people stealing your picture of a dead baby snake and doing what with it? Without having the gene carrying snake, a photo would be pretty pointless to steal or try to claim as your own. I really hope this project works out for you, but this big show you are putting on seems kind of ridiculous to me.

Re: Meet the Screwball
@mike. Trust me i know what goes on over there and how animals come into the country. Ive been dealing with importers for 12 to 15 years. I know for a fact when and where this original female came from. Im not going to name drop cause thats not my style and im sure someone will reply with ,well if you cant provide proof then its not true lol, whatever i get it. As far as pictures goes i have my reasons. Call it paranoia or whatever ill own that. I am alittle paranoid in cases like this and i have my reasons. One example ill give is i bought an original stonewash one of the first males back in 2002 directlly from the source and because at the time i wasnt a household name i got slaughtered on the net for posting pics of the animal. At the time i didnt realize the reprocucions of posting the pic. Now if the pic was posted by a household name breeder like nerd, ralph, or any of the big guys at the time then it wouldnt have been an issue and none would have questioned a thing but because it was posted by a regular joe it became an issue and still to this day i dont know why really. Now as far as claiming genetics maybe i should re explain. I am claiming thete is something genetically going on with the animal. But i am NOT claiming it is a new morph yet. I will know the answers to that question hopefully in the spring. I am coining the name screwball cause if it does prove to be something then that is what it will be called. If its just a new line pastel that i have then i will revisit how i approach that. The quest for new morphs and new combos and new hidden genes is an everday thing and for years i have taken weird looking animals (dinker projects) and spent alot of time on trying to do the same thing. So i know when i got something crazy on my hands and i truly believe this is gonna be one of those types of animals.

Re: Meet the Screwball
@jordan
No offense but if it seems so rediculous to you then why do you keep replying? I dont know how long you have been in this industry but unless you have been in it since the infancy of it i wouldnt expect you to understand my reasons for why i dont want to show pictures of the baby. My original thread is about the animal i put pictures up off and the story behind how he was hatched and what has happened with him to this point. Again i have my reasons, agree with them or not they are valid based on what i have seen and been through in the past before you had all the morphs you have at your fingertips today. And thank you i hope it pays off as well and i will have that answer this spring. This is an idustry of playing mad scientist and trying to tweak what nature has created so hopefully this pans out to do just that. If i post a picture of the baby and people see the father there will be all the drama of no way that produced that, you must be lying, your hiding something, etc etc etc. Bow if it produces again the same way then i can have the proof i need without any doubt. I have time dated warermakrked pics of the offspring and i will show those when i either produce it again or not. At that time i can put doubters to bed. I dont want to jump the gun on anything yet nor do i want to get into an online pissing match over an animal i dont know everything about yet. Hope that makes it clearer to my reasons. But again this post was about the male i hatched from the bush.

Forums are for the use of debating topics and gaining knowledge. I don't think their are any "doubters" that you produced something cool. I'm not sure where you came up with that? I trust that you have something cool in your freezer and I do hope you replicate it. This is all in good debate...Relax a bit. Cheers.

Ok, so I guess we have to take your word on it being pulled directly from the bush... and that it's not one of the many captive bred over there. After all you have been dealing with importers for somewhere between 12 and 15 years...
You have made multiple claims in this thread that it is at least some new line of pastel. Good luck with that.
Mike
PS
If you are so paranoid about people getting details and seeing pictures, maybe next time you would be better off not posting about it in a public snake forum?
-
Re: Meet the Screwball
@mike. Getting the name screwball out was the main goal. Goal accomplished. 404 people have visited the post and now know the name so if it does prove to be something new then it was posted first here. If it doesnt then it was posted here that im the idiot who just named a dinker pastel lol. Either way ill own it;)
-
Awesome looking snake. Can't wait to see what he does with your females next season. :) I'd love to get my hands on a snake like him, even just for the fresh bloodlines.
-
This turned into a pissing match for no reason. Just because he isn't Ralph or nerd some of you want to give him a hard time, seems pretty childish to me really.
I wouldn't post pics of the baby either, you can have something special in your possession, feel free to keep it a secret. I think with the big breeders they show pics but no genetics because they don't know what all is in the animal. Once you get into 5-6 gene animals there is really no telling how it will look and needs to be bred to find out what it really is.
-
Granted this is something different I highly doubt any of the big name guys would say anything if they thought they had something special from a import. Not until they bred it numerous times and got a decent supply of offspring from it.
I like the name and wish you the best of luck figuring out what's going on. Don't mind what negative stuff people say. Haters are gonna hate, just the way of life. If I were you id sit back and laugh about the negative comments. People hating just shows you that you have their attention, if they didn't care they wouldn't say anything. Once again best of luck to you...

If he truely hatched it from a bush mommy. Then I would assume not many people have this "new" special morph. Shouldnt be a problem posting pics if there was truely something there, other than being a pastel.
-
Good luck to you! Keep me in mind when you want to pass some along to others. Dinkers are so much fun!

i thank you for sharing and wish you all the best with this project!!

*truly
And he never said it was a new morph, but it sounds like it might be something more than a pastel. If he doesn't want to post pics that is his business. He should be able to share something exciting without people accusing him of lying or trying to bully him into sharing pics.
-
If you don't want people to steal the new morph, why would you post about it in the first place? :rolleye2:

Re: Meet the Screwball
700 people have viewed this thread in 3 days. Thats 700 people that now know the name.screwball. so when it does produce which i am convinced it will the word and buzz about the animal will always be out. I have my reasons. You may not agree but you now know of the screwball.

Then why a new name? Again...This is just in friendly debate. I have a Dinker that I am breeding this year and have been bouncing new names around in my head just in case it proves to be something new. But I woun'y put the name out there until I know for sure.
-
Ok so my 2 cents...
1. You gave it its own special name, u know theres some thing special about it, but when wotn say its a new morphs? but u gave it a name?
2. you made a special baby talked about it but wont show pics? then u shouldnt of metniond it at all. Or just water mark it....
3.Ant we all freinds here trying to help each other with projects? so why is it now a pissing match? we should be helping not hindering.
4. you opend a can of worms but didnt want to open the can? ... just saying this.. if u didnt want this to happen maybe you should of stayed quite or when u did talk about it reveal all your proof to back your self up. seems like u did but its now seems to be over a baby in a freezer? u have it still, u will have it, you might b able to make more, but wont show a pic? souds like a cliam not a fact.
-
take a picture of it with ur face as a back drop. its hard to fake a face behind a snake.
-
Hope i didnt come off as rear end. Im happy for you i hope u finish proving it out, i cant wait to see what the baby looks like, if its awesome like you say i hope to buy one off you :) one day lol I hope one day people can be a little more open and sharing and a little less thats my can of beans. But even if it is a new line of pastel or a new blonde pastel its still hot n cant wait to see what it does with ur pairing. Just think if it is new your going to make 3 new combos and 1 new base morph called screwball and your name will be under it picture on every site with ur date of made who can dismiss you and it then?
-
Re: Meet the Screwball
I will bet anything if ralph or kevin or vin came on here and posted something like this nobody on here would be saying a thing but puckering up. Look the bottom line is i was putting an experience out there and yes i coined it by giving it a name. Heres a question can any of you know name the genetics in every animal the ralph or kevin show pics of? Hell no you cant and wanna know why? Because they want you to buzz about the animal. They may give ya a hint and throw ya a bone with the name of one gene but not the whole puzzle and why? Because it creates a market for the chase to produce or try to produce what they have. I know this when it does produce out i bet you will know where to look for babies. Get over it. It is my decision based on years of dealing with shady people in the snake industry. I have been cheated, ive been lied to, ive been sold the wrong hets, etc etc ive seen it all in 15 years so i have my reasons. Im sure there will still be the know it alls that want to say what they will and thats fine. Ill just charge those guys more for a screwball hahahah
-
Re: Meet the Screwball
Wow - you guys sure know how to rain on someone's parade. And some of you were down right rude from where I'm sitting. I'm speaking as a participant and not as a staff member.
Snake Lab - I'll be excited to see how your project progresses and thank you for sharing your story. :)

Im not argueing here but ur doing apple n oranges. The flat line is a combo, your is special hidden gene pastel?, or a special pastel?,a base morph dinker. ive seen a few angry post here but most seem to be from mr snake lab attack ppl back over them asking questions. Everyone will be sceptical to a degree until proven wrong then they usually shut up. Take a video instead of pics. And there is alot alot alot of shiester & chislers in the snake world ive met alot, only met 1 nice and helpful person, but not everyone is out to steal from you. Im not a no it all, i just read the post and commented. If you want to attack me n ppl on here for asking to see pictures or asking about your animals past then dont talk about it. And i guess i wont be getting one off you oh well you can get lessers from more then just ralph.
It all boils down to that baby in the freezer (which is called a screwball right? or dad? but wont be varafied by a pic or vid just off ur here say. {in court ud b tossed out by now ;)} ). Oh and what about the mother of the baby pics of her? We know dad is a weird looking blondie looking pastel.
People just wanted some answers to ur statements and lack of pictures, not to be attacked by a paranoid drama troll.

You do remember that Tom Baker didn't release pictures of his Special that made Crystals right away, right? Only a very few people were privy to that until he figured more out about them. What the OP is doing is protecting his project. He has reason to believe that it may be more than what we see now. And yes, he's excited about it and shared it.
Have we all just gotten so accustomed to being fed information on a platter that a little mystery in a project is now vilified?
If it was ME, I wouldn't be able to keep my mouth shut, because I'd be too darn excited to keep it to myself. But I can respect the OP wanting to protect his project "at this time".
And the OP came out the way he did in his responses, because the first few replies were pretty aggressive to begin with.
-
Im not gonna argue with a mod :) but i do remember that Tom didnt release pics for quite sometime and i understand soem of his OPness but then there is this. Im aware that in this "world" ppl are secretive about there projects and products every industry is. But its not about him thinking its more he claimed it was more, he made a special looking offspring that is in his freezer sadly, it has a name givin to it and he says its new, but not completely proven i understand, but you just can put a pic up i know i know OP of the project. Its just he showed a pic of its father that looks just like a normal blonde pastel n if it was bred to a normal it should make normals and him, it didnt it made something totally new looking in his words. But it passed sadly, now he has the only possible maker of this special animal so why with the cloak and dagger? it cant be duplicated, cant be claimed by others, there is only 1 and he has it. Id be supper excited to but id throw everything i had to prove my claims out when i 1st mention it so i didnt get scrutinized over details it would all be there for other to reveiw but if i didnt have everything i needed well is be a fly on the wall like i am now ;). Im not villifing him some are my 1st one wasnt no nice looking n sounding so i posted again. But when inccodent is over infomation only imformation can stop it.
Like i said i hope it proves out for you best of luck in doing it and hope oneday we can see pics of the mystery wild child in the ice box. But still dont attack everyone who askes about it. (hope i dont become a leper for this... peace and love snake lab & rabernet)

Nothing wrong with healthy debate. :)
You shouldn't fear disagreeing with ANY staff member in a debate.
But to continue with the "what if's" of the screwball - what if, the mom contributed to the outcome of the baby? Remember he didn't want to share a picture of her either. So maybe it's possible that someone could have a female very similar to her in their collection that they hadn't planned to pair to a pastel - until they saw pictures of what Snake Lab produced?
I sort of like the intrigue, but that's just me. That's what keeps ball pythons so exciting for me - the new stuff and figuring new stuff out. And kudos to those who believed in their own dinker stuff enough to stay at it and bring us YB's, specters, specials, and who knows what else in the future? :D
-
Good Luck Snake Lab, hopefully you can reproduce the same baby next year and it wasn't a fluke.
People get into this hobby because of all the unexpected outcomes and be the first to create some crazy looking morph and give it a name.
Unfortunately, the big breeders may already have it and are keeping quite trying to reproduce in larger quantities before they release their findings to the industry.
My goal is to create a blue ball python so I can call it Blue Ball. :O
**Sorry had to bring some humor to the post**
-
All I want to know is why in the world you would want to call a new morph (if it did turn out to be one) an idiot ball, dumba** ball, nut job ball, or to be blunt... A F*k ball. (I hope I don't get in trouble for that)
Because, the younger generation may not know it but *screwball* (I have a hard time even typing it) is technically a soft cuss word which is a derogatory thing to call someone. Refer to the first paragraph...
In fact, while I must admit that growing up, it was one of the funnier things my mother would say, I know if I had ever repeated it, I would have been smacked in the mouth faster than I could blink..
Just my 2 cents.
Funny or not... It isn't a "morph name" that I think anyone with sense or respect is going to take you seriously about. Maybe kids will but hey.
-
Re: Meet the Screwball
Lmao are you serious bro? That is seriouslly the longest stretch ive seen so far out of my ever growing fan club. A screwball is a baseball pitch as well. Who are you? The ball python name police. Ive heard more people called a clown then a screwball. Maybe they should of asked your oppinion before that name was given as well. This is the last time im defending myself on here or posting to this thread. Thank you to everyone that understands what im trying to do. And i apoligize for this thread turning out the way it did. That was NOT my intentions. and for those that in their infinite knowledge try and tell me oh its just a dinker or whatever tell me this. Whats so special with the way a yellow belly looks like, or a sable, or a het red, any other subtle looking animal? The answer is, its what you do with them that makes them special. A few of you who trash me on here may have been around the indistry for awhile but i gaurantee you most of you havent and until you have 15 to 20 years dealing with this industry i dont expect you to understand my reasoning. I can remember when the albino was the power morph. Man have things changed and believe it or not i dont think the surface has been scratched at all in whats gonna come out with everyone playing mad scientist. I love it. Thanks again
-
Bro? Ok "man".. I hope that's what you are.. Lol
-
The term i hate the most in this "industry" is playing mad scientist or play god. We are finding naturally occouring genes within the snakes themselves(like our res gene known as gingers), we do not manipulate their dna under microscopes so can we stop saying this please. We are not dog breeders playing god with size, shape, hair and weight. Thanks :)
-
Wow it seems like every one on here has a problem with him double checking his work he might look like a dork now but if he was wrong how big of a a$$ would he look like then ? So no duh he wants to check it all out first and maybe get more than one baby just to double or triple check but hey he's just showing us what's he's excited about stop being haters and just say I hope it proves out wow that was hard !

If this were any BIG NAME BREEDER you would all give them a pat on the back...so when posting and bashing this guy just makes you all look ignorant! Are you jealous he might have something "brand" new!? If so grow up and be men and stop being little hardheaded ignorant boys! Be happy for sombody even if it wasn't you. Maybe one day you will get your chance, until then GROW UP!

Maybe everyone else is "bashing" him but I wasn't. This "bro" simply pointed out the derogatory meanings of the name he chose and asked why in the world he would choose it. Then I get that long reply going nuts on me because he's all mad at everyone else. Whatever. This non "bro" is one of the many who isn't into baseball and IS well over 30. Sorry if im one of the many who wont "get" that name..
Having been in the hobby long enough to know it's ins and outs. I'm NOW going to say that I do believe it was a bad idea for the OP to post a thread saying he produced something but won't back it up.
The snake pictured is a pastel. As for the odd baby. If he'd been around that long, he'd know they hatch either pink or yellow. Sometimes even whitish. The Will Slough line of Blondes I had sure did. So a watermarked photo isn't too much to ask for. Otherwise that odd baby probably should not have been brought up in a forum.
You can't say you produced something and then not prove it. Like everyone here always says, pictures or it never happened..
Otherwise, as long as the OP is going to keep bringing up things like other big breeders, well then, take a lesson from the best. Stay away from the community. The forums. Etc.. Do like they do. They figured out years ago how the hobby and it's community is. Ralph, NERD, TSK, they have all had their share of bashing. It's why they stay OUT of the forums.

Ok foschi lets get a couple things straight aboit who you think i am. I am 38 years old. Been breeding and keeping snakes from hots to boas to big pythons to ball pythons. I have dealt and do deal directlly with the big name breeder and alot of them are my personal friends. You need to first check out the industry you are in before going all politically correct. Bro is a slang word like dude or anything out but im sure you will try and turn it into some kind of race thing or whatever. Look get over it. Noone nwwds to ask your permission or worry bout how you will feel on what i name a snake. Get off your high horse and get a life. This thread is about an animal and a potential new gene to play with. You say normal pastel. Tell me your experience and how you can say what is normal.

OK - I came in here and backed you up in how you have chosen to handle this project.
Now you are being insulting to people about THEIR level of experience, and while not specifically name dropping about all the big breeders you personally know, you're coming very close. It's not as impressive as you might think that it is. It actually comes across less about what you know than who you know.
But when I see people start to brag and bluster about the people in the business that they know and are friends with to try to legitimize their level of experience, I for one am un-impressed. Why? Because I also know and am friends with several of them myself. But I like to let how "I" conduct myself and the animals that I produce speak for themselves.
I don't need to fall back on my friendships with Kevin, or Kara, or Brian, or Sean, or Tim, or Justin, etc to impress others or to legitimize my work.
If you're so experienced in this business, why not share your name? Why not let your OWN reputation speak for itself?
I'm Robin Abernethy, and while I'm no where near the level of the big guys in the industry, and I don't have the years of experience that many others do, I'm proud that I'm humble enough to know that I DON'T know it all, that I continue to learn every day, and I don't need to name drop to be successful and respected by many of my peers.

Wow...a lot of drama for what looks like a nice Pastel...terrible name though...and is naming it really necessary if it's just another line of Pastel? It's not like "Screwball" is descriptive like "Blonde" or "Citrus"...just my opinion, but screwball doesn't fit that snake at all...but it's your snake, call it whatever you want! :gj:
Good luck with your project! :)
