Candling spook unhatchlings?
I was on kingsnake reading a thread when someone brought up the thought about candling. They said the little snake twitched when she candled it. Now do you guys think there could be any detrimental effects caused by candling. Obviously it has worked for many years but could it stress out the little snake inside?:omfg:
Re: Candling spook unhatchlings?
probably twitched from the movement. its like a baby kicking. i dont think any adverse effects would happen, unless you got the egg to hot from the candle or something like that
Re: Candling spook unhatchlings?
i dunno if i was sleeping in the dark and someone pointed a bright light in my face real fast id probably piss myself lol
Re: Candling spook unhatchlings?
For anyone who is candle-happy with their clutches....use an LED flashlight...puts out very little heat...otherwise...it's probably best to leave them alone as much as possible.

I know what you meant. Most flashlights use an incandesent bulb, which produces a lot of heat. There are now LED flashlights available that put out very very little heat, but are a lot brighter. You've never heard of LEDs?
Re: Candling spook unhatchlings?
with led's its a lot brighter hence the thread about bright lights scaring unhatchlings. I dont think 2 seconds of minor heat would even penetrate the egg.
Re: Candling spook unhatchlings?
haha yeah i know what light emitting diodes are, acutally constructed many a things with flashing leds and what not.
Re: Candling spook unhatchlings?
Yes, they move when you candle them. I have seen no detrimental effects by doing it. In fact, it seems the babies come out stronger.
Studies were done on pythons that maternally incubate their eggs. Temp readings show that the difference in temperature were not that different when they *shiver*, only 1 or 2 degrees. So why do it? I think it is to get the babies moving around in the egg. They get a little exercise, strengthen their developing muscles, so when they hatch they are strong enough to get further away and hopefully survive better. *shrug*
