Can I still use a night light?

(I do not own a reptile, I'm just researching and asking questions before I own one)

My room gets extremely bright in the day and extremely dark in the night, but one thing that never goes off when it's starting to get dark is my night light. It's essential to my health that it remains on all night until I wake up. To prevent stressing a snake out, can you just throw a towel over their cage so that they can't see it?

No reason you can't use a night light. It's preferable that it not shine brightly on their cage, but when I think of a night-light, what most people mean is not
what you'd call "bright"). Actually, some of my snakes enjoy their own "night-lights" (either black or red incandescent bulbs that are dimmed down a lot just
to provide some overhead warmth & a little light goes along with it) because they light to sleep in their branches & platform-baskets. (not BPs, mine are rat
snakes & a spotted python, etc.- but no real difference)

You could, as you said, put a towel over your snake's cage (or prop a poster board against the side) but unless it's close to the cage & fairly bright, your
snake is not likely to care. Outside there is also a full moon now & then.

I don't believe your night light will stress a snake out, if anything you'd be amazed at the difference in behavior when you give snakes a proper photo period.

I do 12/12 during most of the year, and when winter time comes, I switch to 11 hour days, 13 hours night(I have the moon glo bulb) to give a bit of heat, but more so to give a faint light to mimic the moon.

Curiosity is getting the best of me. If you feel comfortable sharing; why is a night light essential to your health?

I was curious too. There are studies that have been done on sources of light promoting healing.

If you're interested, you should look into providing UVA & UVB light to snakes, they can benefit from it and in studies has shown to make them more active along with other benefits.

While some types of light promote healing, in general light messes up our sleep patterns. But for some, darkness is frightening and/or has a strong negative
association (maybe with past events)...just guessing, & it's probably none of our business. ;)

Speaking of messing up our sleep patterns, I work nights so I sleep during the day and my snakes are in my room with lights during that time, I had to get a sleep mask so I could enjoy darkness lol.

Due to certain things that had happened in the past, I now get instantaneous panic attacks when in the dark, and sometimes it doesn't even have to be dark! It can even be something as simple as turning the lights in a room off. It's very dangerous that the attacks are so spontaneous, and it could lead to other health conditions if I'm not careful. So, in order to prevent them from happening at all at night, I have a little frosted bulb to cope. :)

No big deal...you didn't owe anyone an explanation, & I doubt there's any person alive that doesn't react negatively to something. I hope you can get rid of this issue
eventually, but either way, it shouldn't be a problem for your pets.

I have so many things in my house with tiny "on" lights that it's hard to find a totally dark room, lol. You know what lights I find very soothing are these "salt lamps"-
they have a tiny bulb inside (like used on Christmas trees) so they aren't bright at all, but with the light inside the salt crystal, it gives off a very relaxing orange-glow.
