Shedding

Hi everyone!

So Olive (BP) shed today, and like last time she had a pretty good shed except that there are two places where there are two individual scales with stuck shed... how could I get this off for her and what do you guys think the issue is? One of the scales that has stuck shed is on top of her head and the other individual scale is on her side.

We normal use damp moss a few days before they shed. My python had his eye lids stuck on when I brought him so I have bath him twice before his next shed and they came off. He has lovely looking eyes now.

What's your humidity it the hot and cold side?

Her humidity is usually in between 58-65 % and her hot spot is 90 degrees and I use the Herpstat thermostat

Could i use a wash cloth and gently rub the spot where there is the stuck scale?

Try putting him/her into a damp pillow case inside the Viv, this was Ur not actually scaring them trying to rubbing them especially if it's on its head. And definitely increase the humidity especially when you know it's shedding time. Temp is fine but again humidity needs to be higher.

You can use a rub the bath her/him in. Only needs to be roughly 2inches deep depending on how big the snake is. You can also use special wood chip in so much of the Viv to help hold humidity, but I warn you it can create to much and a pain to bring down.

What type of gage are you using to test the humidity and heat?

It is a digital humidity gage. Do you think the pillow case method will get the stuck shed on her head?

Guess it's worth a try ... at worst it should loosen the skin/ scales then you can get a very damp , rough textured towel , and let it slither around inside the towel ( on your lap or in the sink ) ... whilst it's moving around just apply very gentle pressure with your hands . It may sound daunting but it's very easy to do and the snake won't care at all if the towel is warmish . Any loose skin / shed / scales will come off onto the towel.

I've used the damp towel technique successfully a few times but after the shake has had a short soak ..... the pillowcase may work though.

Sorry I've never tried the pillowcase method . I wait for eyes to clear and colour returns then start spraying the viv a few times daily .

My Colombian redtail has some retained shed on her head this go around. She is not one that will tolerate a lot of head touching, so I’ve put her in a tub with a wet towel, wrung out but not totally. The tub is in her cage on the warm end and has a hole where she can come out if she wants. So far she’s just hanging out for the last couple of hours.

Do you think if I leave the one scale on her head that is stuck it will come off in her next shed? She doesn't really like me touching her head and this is my first snake so still a little scared to touch her head area... If I need to do I will deffinatly do it though, just wondering if it would be okay to leave it?
