Jumpstart thermostat

Went to Repticon yesterday and saw the most loveliest noodle ever. Wanted to get her, but my mom didn’t wanna be in the car with a snake. LOL. I had planned on going back today to get it if it was still there. Even if it wasn’t, I was going to get one still. They had sooo many of them. Butttt I’m glad I didn’t get anything.

Had set set up my tub and everything was looking good. But I noticed last night the thermostat wasn’t on. And it wouldn’t turn on. I guess I got a bad one because after just 4 days it stopped working. It was the jumpstart thermostat. Got it off amazon.

That scares me so much because I don’t want anything like that happening when I actually have my ball python. I want to give my baby the best possible care that I can. So I have decided to wait and go with a Herpstat. I’ve seen it suggested many times, here and other places.

So while I’m bummed that this happened, I am glad too. Made me want to go the best route with thermostats to avoid anything like this happening in the future.

a blessing in disguise. some of us are lucky to keep them running for a few years, to unfortunately one day find the floor temps reaching ~150° F. a Jumpstart thermostat failure is not an "if" but a "when."

i've been fortunate enough to not have one fail on me, but i checked them regularly and bought a Herpstat the second i could.

you're going to LOVE your Herpstat. when i got my first one i was so excited and i couldn't believe i lasted so long without one.

Ive heard a lot about jumpstarts failing, main reason why I switched to a herpstat 3 months later.

They come at a decent price, but are SO worth it. Never seen such an accurate thermostat (mines always within .2 degrees F). Youre gonna love it.

I've been thinking about switching to herpstat just because I have stackable enclosures, and I've heard such great things about them, but I can't say anything bad about the Jumpstart brand. I've used several of them for the past 6 years and haven't had a single one fail on me yet (knock on wood). Considering the herpstat 6 is about $450 and the Jumpstart is about $30, I'd have to go through almost (15) Jumpstart units to reconcile the price difference. I understand the herpstat has more bells and whistles but I don't really need those.

I've got two jumpstarts and I've had no issues (yet). But I would like to upgrade to herpstats at some point. I've literally never heard a single complaint about them, aside from the price. But I've also heard everybody who owns one say it's worth every penny.

I totally understand where you're coming from, except that you also have to consider the "cost" of a failure, not just the cost to replace the thermostat itself- but
also the potential loss of snakes or harm to them. Horrible to think about, too bad Herpstats are so pricey.

I totally agree with you about the potential for loss or harm to the critters. That would be a nightmare. I'm pretty compulsive about checking and maintaining proper temps. I usually check my ambient and hot spot temperatures a couple of times throughout the day. I also use ultratherm uths which really don't get hot enough to burn the critters. Even without a thermostat, or in the event of a t-stat failure, they don't get much over 100F. My snakes also don't use their hot spots very often. I was just checking on them and only 1 of 8 is resting on a hot spot. The others are on the cool side or perching on a branch or shelf. I'm by no means knocking herpstat. I've just found that I can achieve the same results more economically.

Not criticism from me, El-Ziggy...I don't use Herpstats either; my situation is different from many others & I'm home most of the time too. We all have to
make the best choice that works for us, it's not "one size fits all" IMO.

i still have my first Jumpstart i bought for Yellow in 2014, and it's still running as it should. i used it for close to 5 years, switching from one enclosure to another, running Ultratherms exclusively, and it has yet to fail. i love my Jumpstarts (i have 3!) and i hang on to them in case of emergency set-ups or QTs as i trust i can rely on them for a shorter period of time compared to a high-end 'stat. i also compulsively check temps on anything running with a Jumpstart with my lil temp gun.

only ~1 year ago did i make the full transition to running only Herpstats/VE. it took me a loooong time to save up and buy what i needed (2 Herpstat Intro+, 1 Herpstat 2, and 1 VE300) but i'm so glad i did; i didn't rush to spend all that dough.
