Tiny Hatchling

Hello!

The snakes from my first clutch ever have all climbed out of their eggs. She was a first time female around 2100g and she put out 8 eggs. The eggs in general were very small (around 50g-60g). That being said most of the babies seem healthy with the exception of being on the smaller side. One baby (I think a QueenBee) though, is very very small, about 20g. It didn't seem to absorb much of its yolk. I don't have high hopes but I'm prepared to do whats needed, like assist feed, if necessary, to try to get the little thing to live! I'm just wondering if anyone has suggestions, like when to offer its first meal, for a baby this small, or if I just go about it as a normal hatching.

Is there any chance you could find the link to that? I've tried searching and looking and can't seem to find anything.

It can go either way, now if the animal did not absorb his yolk rather than wait until the first shed to feed, I would do so in the next 3 to 5 days (live large fuzzy mouse overnight), if it does not work simply euthanize and assist the fuzzy the next day, after that feed on the same schedule than the rest of the clutch (large live fuzzy overnight) and assisted the next day if not eating on his own, and repeat until the animal is about 60 grams, at that time if it's still not eating on it's own you can offer a live hopper, remove if not eaten wait a week offer a live hopper again and if not eaten assist the next day.

Getting bigger will allow you to assist every other week instead of every week should that be necessary, the animal might eat on his own.

My smallest was 24 grams made it just fine.

Fuzzy mouse will be fine, if you do pinky it will be too small.

Hey Deb, Just picked up a fuzzy. Falls under Rodent Pro's standards of a fuzzy mouse anyways. It looks a bit big. Here is a pic of the mouse with the snake:

Looks on the larger size than again there can be a lot of variance between a fuzzy and a fuzzy (basically fuzzy are from day 5 to day 14)

Wait and see if it's no go dispatch it and freeze it, to assist I alway recommend something slighly smaller that what you would feed the animal if it eats on his own, makes it easier.
