Asf's illegal?

I've been looking for asfs in my area and everyone i talk to says they are illegal. Is that really the case?

Depends on where you are. I know they are illegal in some states, but I'm not sure which ones they are.

They are illegal in some states because as exotic animals that can multiply fast, they can supposedly do a lot of damage to the native ecosystem and agriculture......Supposedly....

I have no idea why they would worry about this in New Hampshire. ASF are from the same areas as BP's. They'd never survive the cold there. But they seldom use real facts when making laws. The invasive species status of Burms is partly based on the assumption they could someday inhabit southern Ohio. :weirdface

New Hampshire State Laws Governing Private Possession of Exotic Animals

PART Fis 802 GENERAL CHAPTER REQUIREMENTS

Fis 802.01 Permittee Categories.

(a) For the purposes of this chapter the permittee categories shall be as follows:

(1) An individual person shall be permittee category 1;

(2) A propagator shall be permittee category 2;

(3) An individual training and shooting permittee shall be category 3.

(4) The person operating a regulated shooting area shall be permittee category 4;

(5) An exhibitor shall be permittee category 5; and

(6) An aquaculturist shall be permittee category 6.

Fis 804.01 Definitions.

(a) "Cage" means an area enclosed on all sides and has a top and a bottom.

(b) "Enclosure" means an area enclosed on all sides.

Fis 804.02 Non-controlled Species - Possession.

(a) A permit to possess wildlife shall not be required for any person to possess wildlife designated as non-controlled as specified in (b), below.

(b) For purposes of this part, the following species or groups of wildlife shall be designated as non-controlled:

(1) Ornamental aquarium fish, both fresh and marine that shall be kept in a closed system;

(2) Amphibians;

(3) Non-venomous reptiles, except the following:

Spotted turtles (Clemmys guttata);

Blanding's turtles (Emydoidea blandingii);

Wood turtles (Clemmys insculpta); and

Eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina);
(3) The following exotic birds:

Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandieus)

Canaries (Serinus spp.);

Parrots (Psittaciformes);

Parakeets (Budgerigar) except Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus);

Mynah Birds (Acridotheres spp);

Finches (Estrildidae spp);

Pekin robin (Leiothrip lutea);

Weavers (Ploceidae);

Toucans (Ramphastidae);

Button quail (Turnicidae);

Pigeons and doves (Columbiformes), exotic; and

Feral pigeons (Columba domestica and C. livia);

Emu (Dromaius novaehollandire);

Ostrich (Struthis camelus);

Rehas (Rheidae);

Waterfowl, exotic migratory except mute swans;

Waterfowl, mallard by individuals in category 1;

Gallinaceous birds, except:
Bobwhite quail, Northern (Colinus virginianus);

Grouse, Ruffed (Bonasa umbellus);

Grouse, Spruce (Dendragapus canadensis);

Pheasant, Ring-necked (Phasianus colchicus);

Partridge, Chuckar and Redleg (Alectoris chuka); and

Partridge, Grey/Hungarian (Perdix perdix);
(4) The following mammals:

Chinchillas, domesticated, (Chinchilla spp);

Gerbils, domesticated;

Guinea Pigs, domesticated (Cavia spp);

Hamsters, domesticated (Cricetus cricetus);

Mice, domesticated (Mus musculus);

Rats, domesticated (Rattus norvegicus and Rattus rattus);

Ferrets, domesticated (Mustela putorius furo);

Llamas (Lama glama);

Alpaca (Lama pacos);

Pot belly pigs, domesticated;

Rabbits, domesticated;

African pigmy hedgehog;

Sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps);

Tenrec (Tenrec ecaudatus); and

Yak (Bos grunniens)
Fis 804.03 Prohibited Species - Possession.

(a) No person shall be issued a permit to possess wildlife that has been designated as prohibited as specified in Fis 804.03(b).

(b) For the purposes of this part, the following species or groups of wildlife shall be designated as prohibited:

(1) The following invertebrates:

Zebra mussel; and

All non-indigenous crayfish; and
(2) The following fish:

Walking catfish (Clarias batrachus);

White amur/grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella);

European rudd (Scardinius erythophthalmus); and

Round goby (Neogobius melanostomus); and
(3) Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus).

Fis 804.04 Permits To Possess Wildlife.

(a) No live wildlife designated as controlled, the eggs or progeny thereof, shall be possessed without a permit to possess wildlife or except as otherwise permitted under RSA 207:1-a, 214:34-d and 209-A:3, IV.

(b) All species not specifically listed under the categories of non-controlled, prohibited or controlled shall be designated as controlled and shall require a permit to possess.

Actually taking a second look at that list and reading it carefully i don't believe you do need a permit. Either way i just sent an email to the states wildlife people.
